Briefly played one at Bass Direct a couple of weeks ago, its quite amazing how i could pick up the bass and play without looking with those frets. Pretty nice bass, does anyone know if Dingwall have a patent on that fret system?
No. They're listed as using the "Novax fanned fret system"- Novax do/did (not sure if its still valid) have a patent on a method of laying out the frets IIRC but fanned fret instruments have been around for quite a long time.
Dingwall have been around for quite a long time :)

Nah i was just curious as i hadn't seen another fanned fret bass, i just gathered Novax was Dingwall's brand.

You've probably found these yourself but just to add to this discussion, here's the novax website where they talk about the fanned fret concept

actually they have some interesting stuff on the site. Interesingly Sei offer a fanned fret option and I know somewhere around here there's a Shuker fanned fretted bass build being documented.

Looks like Novax do license the fanned fret concept, see http://www.novaxguitars.com/licensing.html

EDIT: Here's the Shuker thread - really nice looking single cut http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31247, oh and here's a fanned fret Sei http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31247

Sorry I'll stop the information overload now :)

The Novax patent (here) only covers one method of laying out the frets, using lines coming from a single point. There are simpler ways of doing it (mark the fretspaces on the longest and shortest strings then join them), while the concept of fanned frets per se has been around since the Renaissance (link).

Wow, that was some serious procrastination when I have lots of things needing doing that are actually important :)

In any case, the lifetime of a patent is 20 years and that one was filed in 1989.
