I mean, I make a lot of lowball bids, so far none of which have won. But, I'm lowballing something worth £200 with a £100 bid or so. What are people thinking when they lowball a Fender bass in good nick with a bid of £8.27 or so? I've currently got a guitar on and it's had 6 bids since Thursday (excluding one I cancelled) and it's currently at the heady heights of £7. I've been known to lowball something that I see with a really bad/inaccurate/misspelled title, because those parts of a listing can't be edited once an item has bids, and a hard-to-find listing's a good listing if you're a gyppo like me. I'd guess that a bid of £8.67 on a Fender bass would have a one in 10000 chance of winning, or something like that. Maybe it's different for different things, but some of these bids..... As an example, I bid £79 on this bass which sold for £411! Even if it's got who knows what aftermarket parts on it, it's still cool! I've got no instrument buying budget at the moment, but I'm still continuing with lowball bids, as I think they're unlikely to come up anyhow. And if I do get a £400 instrument for £100, then I'll just have to ride out the extra couple of months budget recovery. The ebay buying equivalent of crying all the way to the bank I think. The first bid prevents the title being edited, and once its on, you can't forget to bid. If you aren't worried about your cash being tied up, bid early. Puts off the lowballers for a start, they pass over it and don't later think 'actually, thats worth a real bid'. People bidding in little increments is a sure sign they don't know how a max bid works. An early full size bid will defeat the last minute increment people as they run out of time trickling bids and getting massively frustrated you are always £1 ahead. When I'm putting in a lowball bid, I'm not really too concerned about the bid, because I have very little expectation of winning. Hence I just bung in a bid when I see the instrument in the first place, and then don't have to worry about it. I don't have anything emotional invested in my lowballs. E.g. I'm completely unconcerned that everyone knows what my maximum bid is for the Studio Lord listed above. I quite often revise my active listings and find things I've bid on but have completely forgotten about. And it has happened that I've found something interesting on the ebay, inspected the listing, and found it is me that's winning it.
