And to give an alternative (possibly philistine) perspective - most jazz, now as always, just sounds like a load of noise to me. I know there's some great players who operate in that particular musical environment because even I can tell that they have good technique, and they play an awful lot of notes an awful lot faster than most guys can. But, you know what, to me that's exactly what it sounds like - a load of notes; narry a tune or melody to found within a country mile of most free form jazz improvisations that I've ever heard. Most of it is little more than self indulgent musical masturbation...(Puts pith helmet on and ducks below parapet).

I think that critique is fair so far as this piece goes.

While most of the stuff I play and listen to gets characterised as 'jazz' by other people, I would never characterise myself as a 'jazz fan' precisely because of stuff like this. This is the kind of stuff (though an extreme example) that I think gives a lot of people a negative perception of Jazz.

It has to be said ... the musicians demonstrate an INCREDIBLE level of skill that I couldn't hope to obtain if I lived for another 100 years and practiced 8 hours a day. But to be honest I don't think I want to. I can't detect in that video any of things that make music meaningful for me. Certainly no groove, also no melody, barely discernable harmonic movement, and it's hard to tell where the 'one' is at times.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Whereas I didn't get that at all- I thought it was bloody brilliant.
That kinda summarised what I like about jazz.
Ain't music great? :)

Cheers pal.
Really enjoyed that.
Brought back a reminder of seeing Alex Dankworth playing with Martin Taylor at the Wigmore Hall sometime ago.
To those of you that didn't get it don't worry,it'll probably get you later, and then you really will be able to appreciate it :)
