Time for a different type of porn!

This is my little studio set up

It's based round a G5 running Pro Tools LE8 with a Digi 002 interface

Here's the story behind it and how I work it!

I've been using audio recording software such as Cubase since the late 90's and have always run a PC based system with decent sound cards, earlier this year I decided a change was needed as my old PC was running out of steam
I also wanted to try the control surface approach, maybe linked to a sound card. After a lot of research on the www and the upcoming release of Pro Tools 8, I decided to go that route. I also decided to look for a dual processor G5, these things hold good money, but I was fortunate enough to find one local with a good BIN price on E-bay. A deal was done and shortly after, a Digi 002 came up, which I also managed to snag. I already had the Tannoy monitors, so was good to go
My old Ikea Jerker desk was modified, as it was a bit big, so what you see in the photo's is the modified version
Pro Tools 8 was the next addition, this was really what swung me over to Pro tools, and I'm glad now that I made the move, for a number of reasons, more on that later

Once set up, I set about getting it all working and learning how to use Pro Tools after many years of Cubase! Then, I got a new gig with the band I am in now and everything kind of got put on hold, whilst I set about learning a whole load of origanil songs, plus a covers set we pull out of the bag when required.
So after an initial flurry of gigs, it's now time to get back to pro tools. The move to PT worked well in many ways, as now, both myself and the guitarist in the band, run similar systems, so apart from a few plug ins, we are able to share sessions, gives me a chance to work on new tracks in the comfort of home, with a nice, warm coffee.

The set up is simple, I run into a sans amp bass driver which is set flat, the XLR output goes into Channel 1 on the 002. Another output from the sans amp goes into a Bass Pod XT, which goes into the line input on Channel 2 of the 002
I'm still playing around with sounds and levels, but it sounds good to me and having two tracks of bass works very well
I'm still learning pro tools and now have enough to get by, thanks to a couple of DVD's I bought last year.
i'll have some recordings soon as the stuff we are working on right now is close to mastering

Since you're showing your studio shizz, might as well show you EHs studio:

Here is my computer desk, where all the recording is done. It's not really that exciting, just a delta 1010 recording interface (which was introduced 11 years ago but amazingly it still seems to do a pretty decent job lolz) I'm thinking of expanding with the christmas money i got. Trouble is i don't really know whether i should get a mic preamp which i don't really need for my microphones i've got now, or a pair of small condensers which won't work without a mic preamp.

the drums, this is what i'm wanting the mics for. Don't ask about the window, okay?

They're both definitely less cluttered and more organised than mine
I wouldn't exactly call it uncluttered! But i think the velcro cable ties i got for christmas helped a lot in that department because now i can tie my mic cables in neat little loops :) . You've made me curious now, might as well show us yours eh?

here's mine, complete with underpowered PC (really needs upgrading) running reason 4, guitar rig 3 LE and cubase SX3, alesis m1 520 powered monitors, a soundcraft spirit notepad mixer connected to an m-audio audiphile delta 2496 soundcard (soon to be replaced by my lexicon lambda interface/soundcard arriving tomorrow), 25 key evolution keyboard and 22" LG monitor. I also have an SM58 mic, but it's currently broken, so i'm recording everything DI for the time being, i want to get a larger desk though, some wall brackets for the monitors, an sm57, a couple of nice condensers and a nice valve guitar amp and i should be sorted.

oh my god, i'm jealous, SWEET mac, and those monitors are very nice too, we have the big brothers of the rokit monitors at college and they sound amazing! the rokit 5 was my first choice, but i couldn't afford them.

I don't currently own any recording stuff myself as i always go to my uncles house and play with these :)

Set up wise,

Yamaha 01v96 ---> Digidesign 96 i/o ---> Protools HD1 card ---> Powermac running Protools 8.

Were currently using Meyer Sound HD-1 monitors as we got sentthem to see what we think  Although i think we prefer the tannoys pictured!

He's got countless Virtual instruments aand effects.

Not bad for a home studio  as you can probably tell, i quite like my uncle

Mine is a little more spread out around the flat. Any recording has to take place in the living room. Drum kit in the loft. Instruments spread around the other rooms! Machine is a Mac mini 2Ghz Core 2 duo, 4gig ram. 320Gb hard drive. + 750Gb MY Book studio firewire drive. Recording straight in using an m-audio fast track USB.

No fancy control surfaces, but the shuttle xPress which I bought for video editing comes in very handy. Monitor everything through my sennheiser headphones.

Digital piano goes through an M-audio Midi Uno USB adaptor. Drums (not shown) are Roland TD3 V-Drums.

I think that about covers it.

Here are a few pics....

I thought I'd strike while the iron was hot !!

I think that you can play MIDI info using Roland TD3 drums. I had a TD6 kit and it was fantastic. I sold that to get a double bass, then sold that (my wife still hasn't forgiven me for) to fund the mighty 9.
easy and to the point :) can i ask how you record drums? do you just record in mono with one mic?
To be fair, I've not actually recorded drums with it yet as my kit lives at church most of the time. My plan was to record as midi. Next upgrade was to buy logic express as I believe it has a better set of drum samples to use. Although you can apparantly record as midi and then send the midi back to the kit and record using the line in f you want the sound off the drum module.

ah right electronic kit, i didn't read that very thoroughly! yeah you can do that i think, makes sense. or you could do a live recording with just the line out off the drum module i think.
@sshorepunk ... whats nice shiney silvery computer keyboard you be using?
... been looking for a really low profie one like it for ages....

Allen.
It's a regular Mac keyboard, very thin and not too wide, ideal where space is limited.
I used to have a PC running as well, with a switch to share monitor, keyboard and mouse, apart from the lack of right mouse button (I used keyboard shortcuts) everything worked fine. Keyboard is USB
