Yup - that's certainly what it feels like at the moment!! Warwick is a long way though...

Behold Bass Direct's amplification section: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...lification.html

BTW, I'm in Corbridge with a MarkBass Little Mark II head running into a Barefaced Vintage (2x15"). If you want to try it out at some point in the New Year (a bit snowed under at the moment... almost literally...), I'd be more than happy to meet up for an A/B against your Ampegs. We might even be able to rope some other locals in for a mini-bash. I got together in August with warwickhunt, wateroftyne and The Bass Doc (the local legend that is Howard Satterley), and it was a real education in amplification tastes!
A good solution to the MB & GB heads looking too small is to put it in a 19" rack (you get lugs for this) with a tuner or FX unit or whatever floats your boat.
Good call! You're speakin' my crack-a-lackin' language!!

That sounds like a great idea! A lot of you guys will be gigging at weekends I guess, but I'd certainly be up for that. Its also nice to touch bass (!) with some other players, having dropped out of the scene a bit in the last couple of years...

Thanks for the offer :)
Sounds logical! Thing is, I won't know what other cabs sound like until I try them all.... which is why I was kind of hoping for some advice about which ones are "best" - but it seems that there are far to many variables and personal preferences involved for there to be a simple "best" option! Which is kind of what I feared in the first place!

Out of interest, what do you mean by "might not agree sound-wise"? I understand that cabs made by different manufacturers may sound rather different, but can they be so incompatible?
By not ageeing sound wise, I mean they'll be handling the power put in to them differently. If they are both the same impedance, they'll get the same power from the amp, but one might be a whole lot louder, whilst the other one might be struggling with the power, and you won't hear it being upset over the greater volume of the louder cab, so you break one (done with with the classic 1x15 and 4x10 + lots of distortion). Also, at certain frequencies, they might end up canceling each other instead of reinforcing, so make a hole in that frequency, ending up with a totally different sound to either cab, although you'll still be louder overall.

Edit: Also, I think the Big one is more for high powered SS amps than valve ones, the Vintage is for valves, takes less power to get loud, Big one is for epic bottom with lots of power.
....So why do so many people used stacks with mixed cabs - particularly a 15 and four 10s? Why does nobody tell you this useful stuff? Well, apart from NOW I mean....
People will tell you how bad it is to mix cabs, leading you to believe that it is ALWAYS bad, but it can and does work. That's why so many people mix cabs. You'll hear a lot about the "rules" on BC but the only rule is; does it sound good to you? Don't get hung up on theory. Read about it, go out and listen and then make your mind up!

Damn! Why is it that just as I think I am getting things sussed, someone says something that confuses me again!? :)

Just kidding! It's all good advice guys - keep it coming!!

BTW, @chris_b: What's the Thunderfunk like? I was looking at their website last night. What a lovely piece of equipment (oh, and a stunning price-tag too! Are they worth it?).

Unfortunately the TFB550 isn't made anymore but it is the best amp I've ever used, and all my bands have complimented me on the sound. It can go loud with a great clean, full tone with lots of bass mid and top. All the notes are clear, fat and punchy. It has worked well with all my cabs and has spoilt me for any other amp! I used it in the studio as a DI to the desk and the engineer loved the sound. I'd like to have the TFB750 but I can't afford it and they don't come up on the second hand market!! This amp is real quality.
...If you place your bass cab the wrong distance from the walls or floor you will make getting a good tone impossible....
Don't get confused.

This statement is too simplistic. You might be able to improve your tone by cab placement but putting your cab in the "wrong" place won't neccessarily give you a bad tone!

You probably won't have a choice where you put the cab anyway and will you have enough room to swing a cat? Bad room acoustics are more likley to give the whole band a bad sound rather than this "issue"!

So I don't need to look for a levitating cab then? Just wondering how else the "distance off the floor" would be an issue... :)

Neo cabs are lighter, therefore easier to levitate :)

you can get acoustic mats to put under your rig if you want to get rid of boominess. Oldgit told me of these as he uses one called a GRAMMA pad.

If we get the chance to catch up you can find out what a Thunderfunk played through a pair of speakers of identical size, placed upon a GRAMMA pad sounds like... as that's my rig, that is! :)

Cool! But you didn't say where your next gig is - other than "Blyth", which is a big ole town!!

:) Good point!

The Royal Tavern 16-01-10. 'Possibly' the smallest pub known to gigging bands but generally a good gig.
