Ian King bass rig roundup (Hercules Edition)

Another fascintating video into the world of an in-demand show bassist at the top level.  Ian King covers his gear, preamps, settings, mics for his double bass and a discussion with the show's audio designer.  It's not that Overwater bass though, he's got a cool grey one, maybe with a maple neck (?), with black metalwork.  The tone he has is fantastic and his playing sublime.

That was a bass lesson in itself.

 

No stretching to reach notes, a lot of hand movement, even notes, totally relaxed. Ian shows how it's done. Loved it.

Yeah this was great - I was lucky enough to have lessons from Ian over a few years and it was an amazing experience. I miss those times !

 

He is just an all round great guy!

I'm tempted to have a few lessons with him. I've the time but not the budget for many lessons. 

 

Were your lessons with Ian in person or over the internet?

Every time I see Ian King play I go straight to the Overwater website and start planning a build.

I've played that bass. It helps that Ian has a phenomenal technique, but the tone is the best I've heard.

 

I keep up with Overwater basses, I even went to an Overwater event they held in London a few years ago, but every bass I've played has been way too heavy for my back!

Agree. Technique and superb reading chops plus really switched on with the tech. As with the rest of the band, all top flight professionals. Really interesting to see how its done.

It’s no surprise that Ian seems to land the chair for the hottest new shows in town. It’s great for us that we get to see some BTS.

I currently have lessons with Ian over the internet and they are great. Really good at diagnosing where you need to improve, and gives so much stuff to get on with between lessons, 1 a month is almost too much!

Every time I see Ian playing I go straight to the Mayo Clinic website and start planning a hand or talent transplant!!! 👍🤔🤣 

 

As with all Ian’s videos incredibly interesting, engaging and insightful. Those bass lines don’t leave any places to hide and just show what a talented and skilled player he is!
