RMS Vs peak....again

Apologies, I know this has likely been done to death but couldn't find a specific answer via search.

 

Basically my 2x12 Zilla cab is 4ohms and 600w.

 

Just picked up a v1 Darkglass MT500, and stupidly only now realised that whilst it's 500w RMS at 4ohms, it's actually 750w peak.

 

For those better versed with this stuff than I (most people here I'd assume) am I going to need to get a different cab or will the Zilla likely be fine as long as I'm not running the volume super high. Or is the peak of 750w always going to need to be accommodated by the speaker, regardless of volume?

Don't worry. Speakers will happily tolerate short bursts of as much as twice their rated power. Add to that the fact that an amplifier rarely if ever delivers its full rated power and you'll be fine. It will be obvious from the sound if you are pushing it too hard. Just back off the volume in the unlikely event that happens.

Absolutely no need to worry about the ratings or the pairing of the amp/cab; generally the biggest/only worry or consideration is not getting the impedance wrong i.e. plugging a pair of 4 ohm cabs (which is 99% sure to be 2 ohms) into an amp that is rated down to 4 ohms minimum.

My speedometer goes to 260 KPH, and as it's a BMW it can reach that. That doesn't mean I have to drive that fast. 130 KPH is quite sufficient. Just because you have a 500w amp doesn't mean you'll ever use that much power. If you were to measure it you'd find that you seldom go over 50w. That's a good thing, as the majority of speakers will only handle at best half their thermal rating before exceeding their mechanical limit. As for peak ratings those are marketing piffle only worthy of being ignored.

Not all all. The limit on the Interstate north of Concord is 70/112, so they don't bat an eye if you're doing 80/129. If you want to see nuts try the New Jersey Turnpike. 90/145 is common, and most of the cars you see doing that are junkers that probably aren't safe at half that speed. And if you've ever driven in Quebec you know that the speed limits there are just suggestions that are usually ignored.
