Looking at a 1974 Fender P

Recommended Posts

I'm strangely tempted by this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-PRECISION-BAS...%3A1%7C294%3A30

I don't usually pay much attention to vintage Fenders - partly because the whole area is such a minefield for the inexperienced and uninformed (like me).

Can anyone offer any experienced and informed comments on this one?

I know the seller (from owning Ric's) and he's straight, so that's easy, but what about the bass? Is it as kosher as it looks? In the current market, what would be a more realistic price than the £2600 he's looking for?

Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert and I could be wrong.... but the thumb rest is in the wrong place, unless Fender put them above the strings in 1974? Also the neck pocket has been sanded out (at the sides). Why would anyone do that unless they were fitting a different neck and it didn't fit? So the neck might not be original to the body.

For some reason the photos aren't displaying for me at the moment, but based on the information he gives, re condition and extras, I'd say the price is strong. Realistic is closer to £2k. There's a natural '74 - in better condition, but with a replacement pickguard going for a little under £1,700 elsewhere.

As for the rest, '74 is when Fender changed the positioning of this - and I've seen '74s where this isn't consistently placed above the strings.

The bass looks good. The thumb rest is in the correct position for the year. '73 '74 was a transition period for the whole thumb rest thing. But I do think its way over priced.

This one ain't too bad. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1973-FENDER-P-BASS-P...emZ190311352678

Not 100% original but it wouldn't bother me.

Not trying to hi-jack Happy Jack's thread but this one does it for me but what difference would/could the replaced pots make? I suppose irt could depend on the parts used even if it was genuine Fender parts?

With the experiences that I've had replacing pots or basses with replaced pots(as long as the values are matched) makes no difference that I can tell. I would be more annoyed with the extra holes for the bridge cover. But besides that its a very nice bass.
