I have the bass in the same spot sitting down as I do standing up.
That's right on the money, there is little point in doing yourself an injury by playing very high up or very low down for the sake of looking "rock"
I'm in a metal band and my bass position is fairly high up (same place as when I sit with the bass on my lap) and I have never had any difficulty "looking rock"

<This one time ("at band camp" --- sry) after going on after a psycho-billy type band which had a double bass player who liked to do mountain-goat impersonations (ala the Bill Haley/double bass pic above), I went for a bit of showboating and stood on my J bass and played a few bars in the middle of a bass intensive part, the previous band were not far from the front of the stage watching us but weren't amused (??) they thought I was taking the piss. I just wanted to see if I could do it and thought it might make em chuckle too. >

search for live videos of the song carousel by blink 182, the intros played up high on bass and mark hoppus has to sit down to play it because he wears his bass so low. it always makes me laugh, i'd just wear my strap a little bit higher

For me, it depends on music, actually.

When I started playing, I used to do that 'rockNroll' thing, when it comes to straps. But, then again, I was playing in Metallica coverband, so, I simply had to rockNroll.

Tallica stuff wasn't that problematic - I've took a manner from mr. Trujillo - hard parts/playing in the middle, or high-up the neck are played with my leg on monitor (or such), and bass on my knee - perfect, gotta say!

But, when I've joined my new band (covers and original program, mainly rock/metal related), and, when I couldn't decently play Bon Jovi stuff a la rockNroll style (left hand pain was also the problem..), then I put my bass high.

gotta admit, putting it high wasn't only because of comfort and playability reasons (though, that's the main thing) - other players' influence, I'm interested in at the moment, did his job here too.. ;)

Though, if you still want to rockNroll, watch some Mr. Trujillo - he knows how to play and act good at the same time :P

One of my all time fav 'tallica songs but (and I know he's not) RT looks like a total noob playing that. All that's missing is his tongue sticking out. ;)

I'm glad that this thread has reminded me that I need to get some more X-long straps.

Surely your there to play bass, not to worry about how you look!!??

Just wear it the way you need to able to play the bass most comfortably

I think IMHO, it looks stupid with bass around your knees and its bad for, back, etc You dont see many pro's with the bass round by there knees..
However you do see them with their basses up high, which really screws up my back, my neck (admittedly I already have medical problems in these areas) and my right wrist if I'm playing fingerstyle. The higher my bass is, the worse my back gets. The lower, the better it is. I tend to wear mine roughly over the stomach as a compromise.

Now that's weird! The song I need to play chords on is called Carousel. Ain't no Blink number either.
