This might seem crude but if you tap on the pickups with a hex key or similar just under the G string and then compare to the loudness of the taps under the other strings, does it sound quieter under the G. Remember the shape of the reverse P in that soapbar cover. The pickup part will be forward under the G, at the back under the E. For the J, the coil is at the back and the front is empty. I've just tried it on mine and it's the same on all strings. Quote

I figured about the Pickups but even so it is very odd to get four misbuilt ones direct from EMG. Bashes are gatherings of basschatters and guests where we take lots of gear along, chat and try stuff out, sometimes a speaker gives a chat. If you could get along to one, it would be a good opportunity for me/someone to have a good look at your bass. Quote
bassofdeath Posted September 18 Posted September 18 I don't know so much about tapping sounds but I have tapped the pickups with various metal implements and the magnet stops short of the G. You can feel the pull drops off. Quote

Sean Posted September 21 Posted September 21 (edited) We talk a lot about Spector basses but don’t share the sounds very often, so hopefully this’ll make a change. I’ve been editing the recording of the cover band’s last gig and thought I’d just post these snippets of my gigging basses. Depending on the song, it’s either the Bahama Blue (Jap Import) Euro 4 LX with the maple board and black blocks or the Amber Euro 4). Both have EMGs and an LHZ-03 dimed going through a GK Fusion 550 with an Origin Cali 76 comp. FoH is taking a DI from the 550 postEQ+FX. The 550 is going through an LFSys Monaco on stage. Recorded with a Zoom H2n mounted above the mixing booth at the back of the venue. These clips should give you an idea of what it sounds like both up and down in the mix. You can hear some of the top end sizzle and clank cutting through in places. Is a Spector a one trick pony? Maybe. But it’s the best trick in the World and it’s a golden winged pony. If anyone needed proof how good Spector basses can sound out in the wild, now they have it. That band sounds tight, and the repertoire really suits your Spector basses. Great job all-round. Sean Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) The Spector thread was on the brink of falling off the first page so let's get a bit of Friday interest in this slightly quirky alternative to the NS Icon fest in the other thread. This is a Rebop that has been modded (not brilliantly) but it looks to be a good price for anyone wanting a quality MM-sounding bass. It's Czech-made and the quality and DNA of these is as good as you'll get. At £699 (negotiable?) it looks like someone with some wiring skills could have a belter of an instrument. Remember, those SD pickups will sell quickly and part-fund the EMGs you'll need and then you just need to sell one dusty old unused cab to pay for the LHZ-04 preamp. Even at retail used I think this is a good buy for anyone who likes a "semi-rescue". Or, you might just like it as it is. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/spector-rebop-4-mm-trans-blue-stain-2015-pre-owned/ The photos don't really show the detail of how bad that route is but I'm sure they'd send you a close up of you asked. Sean Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago (edited) Geekery Corner - Spector European Edition With the new arrival yesterday (NBD thread to follow when the sun is out in the Shire) I had a penny-drop moment. Now, we’re all familiar with this lovely poster of the history of European-built Spectors and most of us know the differences off by heart but I spotted a significant difference between the models [it is significant if you spend your time wondering about Spector minutiae 🤓] yesterday that I thought was worth noting because it affects what I call the “hanging geometry” of the instruments and although no one has officially confirmed it to my knowledge, I think I’ve deciphered what “LX” really stands for and it’s not “Luxe”, “Luxury” or anything like that. Get your latest prescription goggles on and have a look at this: The 2001-2003 Euro series has a longer neck! The bridge is further North (pickup terminology) on the NS-4CR. The nut is closer to the player on the earlier model. Then we move on to the Euro LX series and that bridge has migrated North again! Here’s some real world examples from the herd this morning... First up are two Euro 4 LX examples Then a Euro Then an NS-4CR I reckon “LX” must be “Long X-tension”, “Xtra Long” or something like that. A Euro LX is not a step up in “luxury” compared to a Euro, it’s mostly different wing construction. The question here is, why? Edited 9 hours ago by Sean Quote

The bridge/knob placements in those pics suggests it isn't just a case of how far into the body the bridge is set. The body shapes may have varied over the years. Quote

The differences in bridge positions translates directly to the difference in overall length. The LXs are almost an inch taller than the NS-4CR. Edit: I would like to point out that I've played/practiced 6 hours today. It's not been all forensic analysis measurement fun; I've got an audition to prep for 😉 Edited 2 hours ago by Sean Quote
