Spector Euro LX5

So, some time ago I was chatting to our own BillyApple who was extolling the virtues of Spector basses. Well you do don't you, whatever you own. Personally I'm a big fan of ACG and Andyjr's creations, owning one of each and also of Trace Elliot, so I'm happy to encourage others to try these items/brads.

Anyway Sean (BillyApple) was a bold advocate for Spector so much so that, at the back of mind, I thought "Alright I might as well give one of those a try" despite not being a fan of their triangular holoflashes.

Just after Xmas, (the day before my birthday actually) I managed to part StevieE from a Korean NS2000 and was very impressed. So much so in fact that I recently acquired a 5 string Euro LX - and I'm not a fan of 5ers generally.

Today I finally took possession of said 5 string, which needed some serious repair work before being playable and had been shipped off to my local luthier, Terry Chapman, who did a fantastic job of bringing it back to the world of the living. (check here http://basschat.co.u...ard-repair-job/)

I brought it home, eventually managed to tune it and entered into the land of 5 string-ism.

I was initially a bit apprehensive - my previous excursions into 5ism had not gone well, the string spacing had been narrower than I was comfortable with and I found myself playing more than my usual amount of bum notes.

The Spector felt so much nicer than the Warwick Corvette 5er and the Roscoe I'd owned previously. My first thought was the neck profile was much more comfortable and easier to play that the aforementioned Basses. Balance is also less of an issue than my previous experiences, so much so that I hadn't even considered it till now.

The pick ups/preamp in the Spectors are a joy to use, finding a pleasant tone is almost automatic - compared to some of the high end gear I've owned which seem to take a lifetime to find that one tone which is pleasing to the ear, the Spectors virtually set themselves, and you're not limited to one great tone, but many. Just love the heavy mid tones as well as the booming, deep tones where the Bass is turned up.

Build quality on both the 4 and 5 string is excellent - even the Korean 4 string which, considering my pre-programmed concept of other Korean built gear was "poorly put together by unskilled automatons" (think MIK Fenders) is unbelievable - no issues at all - especially as the resale prices of one of these is probably less than that of a MIM Fender you're certainly getting a lot of Bass for your buck - rivalling one of my all time favourite Basses, the Bass Collection Nanyos.

Now I've only played the 5er for about 40 minutes today, and with regular interruptions by young Shalla, my 9 month old puppy. So some may argue that I'm still in a "Honeymoon period" with the Bass - possibly, I accept this, however it is certainly a cut above the two I've previously owned and confirms what Mr Apple had gone to great lengths to assure me of - Spector make really good Basses, well built, versatile, easy to play with nice fast necks with an easy to use profile (yes, even on a 5er).

My thanks to Sean for turning me on to Spector - just need to get a few more hours practice under my belt...anybody want to look after a puppy for a few hours??

Great basses, I loved my Euro 5LX.

Yep, there's a thread here somewhere showing how it started life - wasn't pretty. Terry does some great work - ask Lozz.
