jimcroisdale Posted February 15, 2016 Share Posted February 15, 2016 Hi all, I need a cheap and simple mixer so that I can combine my bass output with my iPod output before sending both to my headphones. Just really needs two volume knobs and that's it. One 3.5mm stereo input and one 1/4" jack, and a 3.5mm output. Any ideas? Cheap as possible! mr zed Posted February 15, 2016 Share Posted February 15, 2016 (edited) I use my Zoom B9.1ut multi effects unit to do this. 3.5mm aux input, headphone output, 1/4" jack for the bass input and you're there. Adjust volume on the iPod and bass to achieve any level mix you want. Also doubles up as a useful multi effects unit for live use. It's got a couple of extra features/inputs but I only paid £30 it gives me a dedicated phono line out which I connect to the cans via red/white phono cable which gives a stereo mix of iPod and bass for jamming along silently - something I wasn't getting (kinda obviously) coming out the actual headphone out with my 1/4" guitar cable and reduced/adapter. dannybuoy Posted February 16, 2016 Share Posted February 16, 2016 (edited) Most headphone amps and mixers are designed for mic or line sources and don't have a high impedance input suitable for direct connection to a passive bass. Those Behringer mixers people posted earlier ([url="http://basschat.co.uk/topic/277361-behringer-ub802-mixer/"]I'm selling one![/url]) fall into this bracket. You [i]can[/i] just plug in a passive bass but the tone will suffer as a result. Do you have an active bass, or a pedal you can use in between? If not then get something specifically marketed as a guitar/bass practice unit. I have a PJB Bighead and cannot fault it, there's one used on here right now but at £110 it's probably more than you want to spend: [url="http://basschat.co.uk/topic/279189-phil-jones-bighead-headphone-amp/"]http://basschat.co.u...-headphone-amp/[/url] The Vox Amplug is a cheap solution - make sure you get the bass version, and there is a an improved v2 out now too (which also means v1 versions are cheap as chips on eBay). The Zoom B1on is about £40 and has a headphone amp, aux in, tuner, drum machine, looper, and 100 FX, which is stupendous value. However the headphone amp is not powerful enough to drive the higher impedance headphones that are commonly used in studios. I don't have any problem with headphone levels with cheap Sennheisers HD201 more expensive HD595's or any of the other half dozen phones I've tried. Basically it's a little louder than the iPod, which doesn't mean it'll work with everything but it's OK with most. One thing you may want to consider is looking for something battery powered, there's enough leads already and it's nice to be able to sit anywhere.
