solo4652 Posted September 11, 2008 Share Posted September 11, 2008 Hi, I'm looking for a bass with the following features 4 string (definitely) Passive (probably) Wide neck with wide string spacing. My P-bass is 43mm at the nut, and I think I'll struggle with less than that J style pup configuration, giving a wide tonal spread Glass-like, smooth neck for easy playability Prefer secondhand, up to £250 ish So, something like a J-bass with a wide neck, or a P-bass with a J-tone. It has jazz body with a Precision Neck but has a P bass pickup. with a few extra pounds you could get a jazz pickup put in at the bridge and you would have the classic P+J pickup combo and a snazzy looking bass too. One option would be to buy a fully loaded J body and a P neck and bolt them together. Probably cost more than £250 though, if you want original Fender parts. You could pick up a Squier Jazz cheap, get one of them, and you'd be in buisness. It's a real nice neck, satin finish, ready for tuners, and drill holes for the body joint. With the Squier, you could use the tuners/bolts etc. off the original neck. OldGit Posted September 12, 2008 Share Posted September 12, 2008 My 80's Japanese Jazz 62 RI import has a 40mm nut. That's 2mm wider than a normal Jazz. As it's my first Fender Jazz, I didn't realise for ages. It just felt more P like than I'd expected. Then someone pointed it out. Should be able to get one for your budget. PM me for contacts. It had 2 tone controls added, so there is room in the PG, cavity for a VVT set up with a J pickup added. I swapped necks on mine, partly because I didn't like the wide P neck it came with and I had a maple board, block inlay neck I wanted to use..
