What about "Any chance of a lift to the gig?" Drummers get asked that one a lot.

I was in,er, quite a good band (jazz) for a few years and when the drummer had a lift to the gig my heart used to sink. Because he'd get just a bit pissed. No great problem in that but it meant that he wasn't able to hold the guitarist up. By that I mean the gtr was 'digging in' behind the beat on the slower numbers. Our trumpet player did a nice feature 'Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You' but complained that when he got to the final chorus the tempo had got so slow that he was having to play twice as many notes just to fill the bars.

As a bass player I'd like all guitars to be four stringers.

Motivation is the key....thanks to all.

We had it out at the rehearsal and I think he is up for learning what he needs to.

Pleasant guy who fits in with the rest of the band, local, available, good attitude, no drink/drug problem just needs to go to woodshed for a while to improve his timing.

Managed to get the rest of the band onside so it was all as non-confrontational as it could be.and we are all seeing the issue in a similar way so I know it is not just my imagination.

Gig tomorrow, which will be filmed so any subtle problems may become evident.

Every musician, at least at the functions, weekend player level I operate at is very different, and what each band is trying to achieve is also very different musically and gig wise.

I have played with guitarists who suit one thing very well, but you'd not invite them into a different setting etc.

Main thing is does it work with all parties involved, if not you either change your goal to suit what each individual can do or you change personal, but you cant usually alter the players playing that much.
