Thanks for coming on and sharing that with us Adrian, i for one am a HUGE fan of the mag and have every issue, (Still miss Bassist though) i kinda like the fact that it is a smaller more homegrown sorta mag it makes it feel more exclusive, i get bassplayer only occasionally, i find it just too American!
FWIW i think the 'My bass is feature' from bassist should make a come back, hit me up for the story on my trusty old sonic blue jazz anytime!

Am I the only one who subscribes to Bassics?

It's output is somewhat sporadic, but covers the upright as well as electric. Bit more of a Jazz slant than I'd like, but well worth checking out the free issue on the link above.
Hello Bass-chatters,
Thank you for airing BGM in your forums. It's virtually impossible for me to respond to each and every item of comment and will be difficult to even follow up from this mail as I'm now in the final stages of the next issue production. As most of my time is spent with the magazine you'll only find me dropping in occasionally - no offence meant if I don't reply to a post! I do read the forums and many others that take the magazine as a topic. There are so many issues raised that I think I will have to pencil in the next available Bass Bash to say hello and take on board what's been raised. Communicating one-to one or one to many (!) often reaps greater reward than a misinterpreted post in my opinion. It's impossible to please every bass player all the time but we do strive to reach as many players as possible and if Bass Chatters feel opportunities are being missed I always try to put those matters right. There are however some commercial realities that sometimes tie our hands and to be compared to other publications that have publishing budgets running in the millions is something I can't do a great deal about. I'd love BGM to look like Autocar but we'd need a lot more money! No other UK mag feels a bass specialist mag is worth it. Even the US Bass Guitar Magazine has pulled the plug for low-enders last year. We are celebrating our 6th year and want many more!
I hope you'll find our next issue exciting and refreshing. There's some product exclusive reviews, a MEGA stomp box feature and much more. The cover artist will of course inspire debate...
So Guildford it is - schedule permitting - and I guess I'll have to bring a bass or two...

Adrian,
Welcome and well done for being brave enough to raise your head above the parapet here.
Lots of ideas already for you to chomp on and lots more in the general bass bits of this forum, just take a sample of the current hot threads
Shuttle Vs MB, What is a tweeter?, Jazz Standards,
I guess you do already but monitoring what we are nattering about on here will give you ideas for small articles. Some of us will also be happy to write them ...,

Why don't you sponsor a special area here for things related to your magazine?
This is a terrific direct channel from many many UK bassist to you and I am sure that would be invaluable in garnering ideas for the content and thus presenting what people would like to read in the magazine.

Now, as a regular reader I would just like to raise one point about the last magazine:
Was it not rather ironic that your editorial was basically one big rant about everyone else going on about the gender of women bassists, rather than their bass playing, culminating with you stating your gender in the by line?

Why mention their, or your, gender at all?

I enjoy the mag every time. Keep it up.
OG

Thanks for coming on the forum Adrian.
Ive been playing bass for about a year so more beginner/intermediate stuff would be of interest to me.As a subscriber i feel that there should be more content in the mag, especialy as its Bi-monthly.Before you know it you've read it.I'd be happy to pay more for more content.
A Jazz shoot out would be great,I'd especially like to see a review of a bacchus. :)

That was one of my gripes with BGM actually, it didn't look like anyone proof-read it. I emailed them a couple of times about glaring errors in speelig and grammar but they appeared to be ignored.
Classic.
That one was, of course, deliberate.

He he...

I can't wait til the next edition of the mag. Maybe there should be a "what's wrong with BGM?" a la "what's wrong with FHM?"...

 • 4 weeks later...

Howdy, folks. FWIW, Bass Gear Magazine is now fully up and running. We offer free digital subscriptions or paid print subs (and yes, we ship to the UK). You can sign up for either at www.bassgearmag.com. We focus pretty much solely on gear related issues (with lots of reviews, factory tours, discussions of where things are made and what that means, tech tips, etc.), and do not do any interviews/instructions/etc. Jake Kote and his crew at Bass Musician Magazine do an awesome job of that, and I highly encourage you all to check out his mag, if you have not already.

I am also a long time subscriber and fan of both Bass Player and the UK's Bass Guitar Magazine (I used to write for Guitar World's Bass Guitar Magazine, btw). Those are both great pubs, and I like them a lot.

Our magazine is a bit different, and hopefully we can offer something to the mix. One hallmark of our reviews are the extensive bench tests of amps, cab, and basses.

Sorry to come across as an 'advertisement' (and I'll delete this post if people find it offensive), but I just wanted to let folks know that there is another source for free gear reviews out there, if you are so inclined.

Thanks, Tom.
