Howdy all,

I'm looking for something close to the following phat synth bass sound out of a single/series of pedals (i.e. not rack):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqxnm6t3QMw

The appropriate pedals I currently have are the Akai Deep Impact, Woolly Mammoth and EBS Multicomp. Am I on the right lines here? Any ideas? Definitely up for buying any gear that would help me get closer to this bass sound, so open to all suggestions! Anyone out there reckon they've got this sound down?

Gotta love that track/band!

Cheers everyone

I recently ordered one of these to try to cop more authentic-sounding mono synth tones - I think it will work pretty well on bass. I also ordered the "Meatwad" (Meatball clone) from him because you can turn off the envelope follower and just use it as a static filter, or sweep it with an exp. pedal.

That's a pretty pricey solution though, and I can't tell you whether it works yet because they're still in the mail. Fingers crossed though!

The Moog FreqBox should also be able to produce authentic synth sounds with the osc hard-synced to the input signal, but again you'd probably want a filter after it to shape it. There's also the upcoming Octavius Squeezer from Chunk Systems which will be able to do similar things.

Apparently the waveform sounds from the Boss SYB pedals is pretty good too, it just doesn't track very well.

Not sure what other options there are, except buying a synth. There's a few SH-101s on eBay at the moment? :)

Thanks mate, thats been really helpfull. The Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer looks like the badger's nadgers on their website. I'll def give that some thought. The guitarist in the band is currently using a freq-box, so I'll run my bass through that later this week. Lemme know how the pulsesynth works out for ya, money is no object is I can get that monosynth sound going on!
Cheers again
Here's some sound samples of the new Chunk Systems Octavius synth: http://www.chunksystems.com/os.htm#sounds
On the basis of those samples alone, I won't be selling my Deep Impact any time soon. I hope it can do softer moog and oberheim type sounds too. Should do, surely?

dissapointed slightly, i was hoping for a deep impact beater as was the hype on talkbass, from those samples deep impact sounds far better imo :) hopefully it will sound better and have many more options in the flesh

Yes, funnily enough as soon as I heard the album track some months ago I went straight to my Vbass to cop the sound. One preset called GR2000 or something sounded very similar, kind of a saw shaped wave. I played around with it and got just what I wanted, added a bit of sub eq to fill out the bottom and me and my brother jammed the track for hours (he is a drummer!)

Cheers

Yep the Korg G5 sub-octave sawtooth plain nails it too. As will (I imagine) the Octavius Squeezer's sub-octave sawtooth.

I sold one to fund the other so I'll be wanting my G5 back if the Squeezer doesn't hack it. ;)
