Why do you ask? [/quote] I've always rather liked surf music and regularly listen to Surf Guitar 101 and Shrunken Head Lounge podcasts and have loads of cds. I also have some Teisco, Kent, Guyatone etc guitars and basses. It just always seems to be a happy and upbeat sort of music and wondered what it was like from a performers point of view. They always seem to have a lot of fun and the guitar parts are great. Lowender Posted May 18, 2013 Share Posted May 18, 2013 Any bass would be fine -- as long as it's green. lol The bass tone on those records aren't especially iconic. I like surf music and always felt the bass could be stronger but the recording equipment at the time couldn't support it. Here's an example of bass heavy surf that got my attention. Lynottfan Posted May 18, 2013 Share Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) YEP, had a band called Pulp Friction, formed after the film that inspired the name, did very good business for a year or so, got horns, trumpet, sax, did the sound track, interspersed with dialogue quotes, played guitar in that one, Dick Dale influenced playing is a forte of mine, great fun music to play, the secret to playing good surf music is to go with the flow and the buzz of the audience, don't try to be to regimented or to tight let it flow. [/quote] That's really interesting thanks. I've been listening a lot recently to surf musicians on podcasts etc and when interviewed enjoyment is always a big part of it. Look at Dick Dale, when he goes out as a trio, the drums, the bass guitar and the guitar are seriously motoring, alot of bands out there doing the "surf" thing are all a little bit twee and a little bit twang, that is the wrong thang! Surf music is good time music that motors, having seen Mr D a fair few time's he remains an inspiration, a point of attitude! Cat Burrito Posted May 18, 2013 Share Posted May 18, 2013 I recently joined a rockabilly band but we're far from pure and the singer / guitarist of this 3 piece was saying just at the last practice that we have elements of everything from swing to surf in what we do. I think the whole DD story is fascinating especially the Leo Fender, JBL speakers, Tank Reverb etc connections it really was the birth of a new music. I wonder how many people picked up a guitar ofter seeing him? From the lps and cds i have and from memory there was the sanitised and respectable side of surf music and the other side where the groups were more like instrumental garage groups.
