They don't go anywhere or add anything to the song and seem superfluous in some cases. These two spring to mind. discreet Posted January 15, 2013 Share Posted January 15, 2013 I believe Sounds of Silence was originally an acoustic guitar and vocal number and the drums, bass and electric guitar were added later (without the knowledge of S&G incidentally), so that's not surprising.
