I've never seen an old instrument with corroded metal parts. Chrome plating tends to hold up... Gibson gold plating not so much.

All 3 of my MusicMan basses have lost the shine on the machine heads...

I just don't get why people trot out that tired old phrase. MODERN FINISHES DO NOT "RELIC"!!!!!!!! Doh

This is very true as most guitars have a poly finish.

However a Fender Roadworn or Highway One has a nitro finish that wears quicker and after several years dries harder and brittler than poly. It'll flake and wear like the old basses used to.

In my opinion no reliced bass looks quite right, but if it's nitro and you abuse it for several years it'll probably start to look right quicker.

Depends where you are, but Terry of TJC Guitars, in Stevenage, Herts, will relic a bass for you. So you can buy the bass you want, then factor in a bit of extra cost for the relicing. his prices are good, and his workmanship is excellent.

Re Roadworn v reg (only used Precisions mind, not Jazzes) - the Roadworn basses play great, and feel so comfy. The regs are good, but the RWs are better to play, imv.

He speaks the truth...Terry is a top fella..always reasonble prices for the work he does..

I'd love a Bravewood. Old guitars are just nice objects for some reason. And the closest I can afford these days would b a relic. I have been fortunate to own a 61 jazz master but wouldn't want to take an irreplaceable guitar to the pub.

I had a Bravewood P and have an old J finished in Nitro which is well knackered. The Bravewood pushed all my old Fender buttons completely.

Sandberg do great reliced basses if you can find one used.

Very nice! :D

PS: Nothing to do with me by the way, just spotted it on Gumtree!

I have played on 2 Sandberg relic.. and it's really great .. it has that relic look ( I had picked hard core aged- that's how they called it) .. the advantage is that you have a versatiity of sound .. active bass 2EQ.. and a passive mode if you want were the 2 eq knobs become 2 tones..

I had played with the JM version maple neck/fretboard and the JJ version Maple neck/rosewood .. and really prefered the JM .. now they called them TM and TT.. they have changed the name sometime in 2011..

I will re- order one soon with maple neck. probably sunburst . harcore aged again. and J+M .

You can also look to the french man " STEVIE G " he does great stuff . and he works on demand . depending on the sound and look you want http://www.stevie-g.fr/Bienvenue.html

Cheers

Modernity/era of manufacture has nothing to do with it. It's the type of coating. If you want a nitrocellulose finish which will look ratty in 20 years time, fine. That can be had on a bass made today if you like. Maybe not on the bass you want. That's another matter entirely.
