This is quite a nice summary of 12 bars:

Perfect, really useful, thanks mate, I'm really intrested in how jazz grew from the blues and am hoping to get a good grounding in blues to move into jazz with.

Tommy Shannon was the perfect complement for SRV, as was Chris Leyton I guess, the perfect Blues Trio for me.
Dirty Pool is one of my favourite Stevie Ray tunes with a lovely bass line to go with it. A stand out as peteb describes.

Basically you plod along playing a walking bassline whilst a load of guitarists w*** on endlessly over the top of it, pausing occasionally to sing some bollocks about how tough their life is before playing another solo on their £5000 private stock PRS or similar.

LMAO

Nice one - shows SRV at his best in many ways!

We were asked to learn this one for someone's birthday party a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, we didn't manage it due to a family illness within the band so we just jammed a couple of SRV songs that we kinda knew instead......

Mike Keneally - played with both Frank and Dwezil Zappa's band as well as with Steve Vai

His bass player (& co-band leader) is Bryan Bellar, who has played with Dwezil Zappa and is currently playing in Steve Vai's band..........

This is excellent. I was ready to dismiss Oli Brown because he's ............err............about twelve! But this is great and with some really nice interesting walking bass parts in the middle bit.

They have all the sounds/gear and are well schooled in technique and expand some really nice ideas but to me the feel isn't really there. They are undoubtedly talented though, and I'm probably a bit jealous/harsh of them being very young but my critique is valid I think.

if you get the chance to see him live then its worth forking out for a ticket - dont be put off by the fact that his persona 'doesnt fit' the blues

Thanks folks, great advice, will deffinatley listen to all of them.

Could anyone shed any light on what a 16 bar blues is and what someone should do at a blues jam, do you ask to play a certyain song or just go with what the band are doing?

Cheers
[/quote]

The lenght of the bar count is for the lenght of the turnaround but 12 bar is generic for 3 chords in a 12 bar sequence. There are zillions of variations but most people mean just the one thing when they call it up.

The form is generally for a jazz standard where people play the rounds...in a 12 bar format of chords and bar lenght. The vocals start and sing the 1st verse to chorus and then the solos go round the band and every one gets lenghts of 12 bars... The gtr ignores all this and solos for as long as the leader will let him

A 12 bar should not only have 3 chords though but again, a piano player will know and adhere to this as will the horns, but gtrs struggle to get out of the key of A.:
