just as a thought .... has anybody any experience of perspex or acrylic bodies?

i recall the dan armstrong thingy from years ago and if i remember correctly was there a bass version as well as the six string?

the idea of a perspex/acrylic bitsa project has just occured to me and requires a modicum of investigation i feel :)

I used to do allot of work with acrylic - it machines nicely and polishes up like glass :) One issue is the weight though, it weighs much more than wood which is one reason the Armstrong guitars had very small bodies. That said, you could look at fabricating a semi hollow body.

The bass player in Goldfrapp used an an acrylic Precision. The body and headstock were see through but the neck itself looked like wood (I think).

It was made by Crimson Guitars, there's a very detailed build diary of it on his site, here's one page:

He has several including one which was all-acrylic including the neck. I've played this one and unfortunately it's not a particularly good instrument - extremely heavy and with a massively chunky neck. Also while it looks great at a distance up close you can see every unpolished internal surface which I found detracted massively from the overall look of the instrument.

One for the video only and then only if you can take a decent break between each take!

Now that (apart from the boring telecaster shape) is how to make an acrylic guitar. The attention to detail described in the thread puts the finish of the Crimson bass to shame.
