Guitar pickups in basses

I'm thinking about a mod that would need a guitar sized humbucker in the bridge position. I've been looking online for ages and all I've really come across is a Les Paul/ Thunderbird bass pickup in gold, which isn't ideal cosmetically. On the other hand there's plenty of guitar pickups that would fit and look right, for example a Kent Armstrong PAF model.

Thing is, I know how a Les Paul bass pickup is likely to sound, but with a guitar pickup in a bass I don't know what to look for. So, anyone found anything that worked well, or any suggestions what to look for?

I'm possibly going to team it with a Dimarzio model 1 at the neck, if that makes any difference.

You may find you're OK even with individual pole pieces. Rickenbacker toasters for both guitar and bass have six polepieces under the cover. I've got a Kent Armstrong copy of one on my four string, and have no problems with string balance. How the tone of a guitar humbucker would translate to bass would take some guesswork, however.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Epi Les Paul would fit, I guess. Not sure how good they sound though.

If output and description is any guide, I was thinking this might work "ALNICO / D.C. =8.9K- Sweet and soulful classic PAF tones with a warm bass, punchy mids". Rather than other models in the same range, which are higher DC and either described as bright or good for distortion. I suppose I'll just have to get something and see what happens.

Those are the pick ups in my Epiphone Thunderbird. If you want a really vintage rock n roll then go for them but if you want something extremely trebley then go for some other humbucker pick ups

I've a Dimarzio X2N-7 in a bass and it sounds mighty. Some kind of Jackson stock humbucker in another which is quite good. And I have a SSH Strat I rigged up as a super short scale bass, and kept the stock pickups, with no issues.

That said, if you want a bass pickup in guitar humbucker size, there are a few options, EMG make both active and passive, Rio Grande make some called Pitbulls(I have one, it's pretty sweet), or you can find NOS Gibson bass pickups from their old Les Paul basses on eBay from time to time. I got a pair of them once, incredible sounding pickups.

A Kent armstrong cool rails dual blade humbucker makes my cute little '71 daphne blue musicmaster bass sound massive and as it has a plain black enclosed cover with no poles showing it looks totally stock. I've also tried a hotrails - in my daughter's musicmaster, but that's all growl & not enough woof for me - even with dead flatwounds.

read this about one of cliff burtons basses on wiki before, may be of interest too you - "Rickenbacker 4001 in Burgundy; later modified with Gibson Mudbucker and Seymour Duncan J Humcancelling pickup. Cliff also had a Seymour Duncan stratocaster pick-up installed under the Rickenbacker bridge in place of the foam mute. This bass resides at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
