Is there any way to get any more sounds out of it without having to rout the body out for a bridge pickup? Some MMs have Piezo pickups in the bridge...what's all that about, then? Don't mind having the bass tampered with, but REALLY hate the look of a P bass with an extra pickup... foal30 Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 well, your hands is a good place to start. specifically where you pluck/attack. thumb/palm mute/ flatwound strings on a P is nearly always nice. going the other way tonally P with Pick can't be bad Sadowsky Pre-Amp is a good buy for a Fender. It don't do a lot but what it does it get done well. two weeks ago I put a light flange on a track while pumping 8's with my thumb. Musky Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 You're fairly limited with a single pickup, but a push/pull pot for series/parallel and a dual concentric pot offering treble and bass cut would give you some more tonal variation without messing with the look of the bass. GreeneKing Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 Basically you can stack your volume/tone and fit a Villex booster on the output or fit Villex pups with the extra mid control. On my Bob Glaub I did both and put the jack into the side of the body. Another option is to feed your Thumper through an ACG pre-amp as per my Warmoth. 7string Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 I've had the chance to play an instrument with the ACG pre in it and it's a totally different kettle of fish to the usual boost/cut idea. The flexibility the pre has is just amazing and because it doesn't just boost/cut preset frequencies but uses filters to play with the sound. It really has to be heard to be appreciated and then you really do need to put in the time to get used to it. GreeneKing Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 I'd just like to add that I only completed my Warmoth P bass on Saturday so I'm still getting used to what is the very 1st single pick up ACG pre-amp. It suits the P really well. The low pass filter by itself gives everything from dub to clank with a wonderful array of mids thrown into the equation. The threshold boost adds real 'resonance' at the very frequency you're focusing on. The high pass filter then provides you with a great amount and selective quality of 'zing' too if that's your thing.
