Stingrays improve my playing...well they feel like they do.

Don't get me wrong here, I've a J-Retro in my Jazz and I'd never swap it out, but in a Ray? sacrilege.
I understand where you're coming from, but as much as I liked the 2 band EQ in my 'ray, it could get lost in the mix live as it is, IMO, a bit light on the low mids. The East MM pre is very different to the J retro. As McNach says, its voiced as a 2 band 'ray preamp (apprently based on the pre-Ernie Ball preamp), but with the ability to dial in some mids. Fantastic live.

I have never really liked Stingrays, there is just something about the neck profile that I just don't like (and the looks, and a bit of the sound) . Saying that though there are certainly basses that I feel 'at home' at, which make me feel like I'm playing better than I probably am. Beer and exaggerated self-confidence can also achieve this.

Oh well, purely in the interests of research you understand, I'm about to find out if I agree! I expect delivery this week - 5HH in Honeyburst, Maple board and white pguard.

Yup, I have finally ordered my Stingray (again bought blind due to my back-of-beyondness) having gone on about thinking about it for weeks. I was after an HS but wasn't entirely sure why, so when I found out the importer had a HH in stock - I went for that.

I think it's the next stage in my oddyssey of Leo designs, having had a Js for years but then a recent P epiphany (as opposed to epiphone obv). I'll be due a G+L this time next month...

I absolutely LOVE my SR5 HS, and the HH is also a brilliant beast!

I, too, am testing this theory. I collect a Stingray next weekend.

Well Mr Gareth I must admit it's partly your fault - wot with your gratuitous porno pictures of shiny new Sterlings etc!

It's unfinished business for me too, I wanted one about ten years ago but got talked out of it. Now I'll have to shift the Lakland that I bought back then instead.

And to think this time one of the dealers I mailed for prices tried to talk me out of it again (I won't name him!) - I think he was steering me towards something thru-neck and pointy too which ain't never gonna happen - not on my watch soldier! :)

I picked up this today from Mylkinut (cheers mate, by the way).

This is the first time I've played, let alone owned, a Stingray. I have to say this is one of the nicest basses I've ever used, it's just so easy to play and sounds fantastic!!
Ordering an Ampeg PF-500 on Monday. Tuesday's band rehearsal could be one of the most fun yet!!

Nice! Mine comes on Wednesday. I bin bad tho. We had a band 'hangin around between gigs' day in Cardiff on Saturday and there was this sunburst highway 1 Precision in the window of GM. An amount of goading ensued plus an offer from our drummer to buy my cv60s P and bob's your disgraced and disowned uncle. That's two basses in a week - a record for me that's never to be repeated - and no, I'm not proud of myself.

Hey G, I'm loving the Big Als tone now!! After a drastic change in technique, I'm now employing a more subtle fluid plucking motion with a similar attack of finger picking on guitar, the very tips still grip the string to give conciderable sharp attack like a like without loads of fret buzz and clicking, also cutting a few dB of serious low end on the TC to help stop rumble, cutting back on the tweetertone and it the big al (and my others aswell) sounds amazing in all configs. Especially liking the Passive tone to get more natural vintage tones. It's also got the best P-bass sound I've heard since owning a Epi Jack Cassady bass, very woody and full.
Did you ever get yours sorted?

I'll have to get a ramp installed on mine to help monitor my technique, help keep the fingers from digging in too much during gigs when I'm not concerntrating so much.

Took the Stingray to band rehearsal last night. My god what a bass!
Due to a failure of my new Ampeg pf-500 I got to try the bass through a couple of different amp configurations:
Straight into the Ampeg
Into the Ampeg via a DHA VT2
Straight into an Peavey MkIII standard
Into the Peavey via the DHA VT2
and then into the Peavey's poweramp section via the VT2

all variations sounded lovely!

Once I'd gotten used to the slightly narrower string spacing the bass was so easy and comfortable to play.
It'll have it's first gig with me on Saturday, hopefully with a working Ampeg...

Aw I have played Stingrays (and my beloved Sabre) for years. I'd always resisted the Fenders, I tried one once and it was a dog.
Only recently I got given a JB fretless (lovely, and what a gift!) and now I've bought a Fretted Squier JB (which is outstanding, really remarkable to play). I was having my Sabre refretted so I took the Squier out gigging - now I've gotten used to it (did I mention its a beaut to play!) I hate to say my Sabre is not getting used at all these days! I find the string spacing to wide and it feels like much more effort than the Squier to play! Go figure...

I had an OLP for quite a while, but finally had to give it up largely because of the pickup/thumbrest position.
If I played longer than a few minutes, my plucking hand would blister badly, and I did more than one gig bleeding from my fingers. Not good.
