Paulman basses

I got a Paulman 5 string a few years ago in a ridiculously fortuitous trade for a nackered old upright. Other than a couple of people I know around Yorkshire (the luthier was from Huddersfield) I've never heard his name bounded about or seen one of his basses. There's no mention of any of his basses on here other than mine and one that's appeared in the for sale section a couple of times.

Just wondering if anyone else has a Paulman or has any experience with one? There's got to be a few out there!

Tim

Mate of mine had a beautiful Precision (early style) made by him - 2 tone SB,maple neck etc.
Great bass and craftsmanship, not sure where it is now though.
I went to Paulman's workshop in Huddersfield many years ago to collect a guitar he'd been refinishing - again top quality work.

I acquired this one; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=Paulman in a trade with Lozbass for a Gordon Smith semi-acoustic 4 (apologies to angelagnostic for the use of his sale thread and pics) - as a dyed-in-the-wool 4-string player I saw it as an inexpensive foray into the world of 5-string, but at a decent quality level.

I have to say I'm hugely impressed with the build quality and the tonewoods - the multi-laminate flamed maple neck is a work of art, and the lovely quilt top is needless to say a proper carved one, not a veneer Also as the spacing on the upper 4 strings is very similar to a standard 4-string it's perfect for a 5-string noob like me - no confusing the E with the B like I did on my previous attempt (an OLP "MM5"). I'm considering changing the p/ups and preamp, more out of interest than from real need.

Shame Paulman wasn't better known as his instruments are easily on a par with Overwater, Goodfellow etc, and damn shame he passed away last year. :)

Edit; I think this was designated the "Rex" model

I recently acquired a Paulman upright electric bass which is wonderful to play and a lovely alternative to my Stingray etc. I'm not absolutely sure bure I've heard that the late, great Paul McNab built very few of this type of instrument. Through my Hartke 3500 amp, I get a very credible acoustic double bass sound with full, warm tone. Perfect for jazz, folk and americana.
