Nasty scare with left hand

First DB gig coming up and first band rehearsal on Sunday so what do I do? Fall down the stairs at 6am today and dislocate two fingers on left hand. Managed to yank them back into place ( horrible experience, made me throw up) and put hand under cold running water. Loads of ibuprofen. Hurting less now and I will probably get an x-ray done to check if anything broken. Fingers crossed ( and they were unfortunately) there's no lasting damage.

Has anyone dislocated fingers and what is the recovery time? Obviously I am very worried about upcoming band rehearsal as there will be a maximum of two before our first gig on 30th

Clarky, that's bad news, I dislocated one finger in January 2008 and I still get problems, despite 6 months of physiotherapy. Get yourself straight to a physio with X-ray facilities and really get into the detail of what you've done and what the process is going to be. I was lucky in that I dislocated the third finger of my left hand, which although it made triplets impossible (and I still can't play them well), still allowed me to play.

You have to weigh the short term, which is an amazing opportunity, with the long term, that is, if it's an important finger bass-wise, by playing before it's fully functional you could do some serious and irreparable damage to your technique and fingers, especially as it's DB we're talking

Call me if you need any advice mate

Chris

By the way, when I had X-rays after I dislocated mine, they told me I was an idiot to have put it back myself, and said that I probably did more damage to the joint putting it back than dislocating it in the first place. Don't do anything more mate!

Oh man I'm so sorry to hear this Clarky, I don't know anything about the appropriate medical care but I do know that playing DB requires fitness. Take it easy mate, no strain because what you do know will impact what you can do later. See what the doc says and then consider finding a an understanding dep... someone who understands your situation and is willing to help out.

Ouch.

I dislocated my right index finger playing video golf (story for another time) four days before a gig. I played the gig but I had to use my middle and ring fingers as my index finger had swollen to the size of a Lincolnshire sausage. It stayed that way for about 2-3 weeks, not helped by having to do a lot of computer work using a mouse. All in all I reckon it was about 3 months before I could play without any pain and possibly a year before I regained full movement

Like you, I had my finger yanked back in place almost immediatley, but the A&E nurse reckoned that the quicker it was put back in place, the less swelling there would be.

As for playing a DB gig in two weeks... I don't think you'll be able to do it, you just won't have the strength in your joints to stop a note and that's before you take into account the pain and possible further damage. If it had been your right hand, you could get away with just using your index finger for plucking, but unless you can play your parts with just your left index finger, I reckon a gig is out of the question.

Gutted for you mate, I knackered a joint after falling on a finger playing football, and the finger was extremely painful for a good few weeks.

If you make the gig you'll acheive hero status in my book, think it'll be tough though.

Fingers are tricky buggers, still can't make a proper fist 15 years on!!!

Good luck though mate and hope you make it!!

Judging from your original post, there is absolutely no way in hell I would be doing the gig. I would strongly advise to keep off playing full stop until, in your mind, you're pretty much certain your problems are completely gone and even then I would ease yourself very slowly back into things.

A very sorry read though :) I hate reading injury threads...

Dude, if you want a dep who won't show you up or steal the gig, give me a shout! If you didn't have the splint you could make it with fingers taped together (for whatever reason, I only use first, second and fourth fingers on DB), but the splint is a problem. In all seriousness, you could get a second opinion from a specialist (e.g., sports) physio; the good ones tend to be very good at managing future risk whilst maintaining current performance.

All the best either way

[quote name='Clarky' post='986984' date='Oct 13 2010, 02:31 PM']Bad news. X-rays showed broken bone in hand and minor fracture of ring finger. I have ring and middle fingers taped together and a hand splint.

Bugger, sorry to hear that it's bad news. Still, remember the phrase from the Simpsons episode "Bones heal, and chicks dig scars!"

Best of luck with getting it sorted - I think the gig sounds like a risky venture at the moment.

Hi mate, I've left a message for the frontman/leader and offered him either me on electric bass for the short term or a dep on DB. I reckon I can blag it on my Precision as the bass lines are generally very simple and I can make a lot of use of open notes, plus the action on my Precision is very low. DB is obviously out for me for a few weeks :)

Will keep you posted

Bugger! Hope you find a suitable workaround.

Would fretless bass be an option, you did say the bass lines were straight forward??

Ah, if either of us had a great mind, I'd say something profound........ :)

PS I have a drefretted Jazz you could use if of use!

Thanks mate! I have - by spooky coincidence - just asked the owner of my old fretless Precision if I can borrow it for this weekend's rehearsal as the action on that is lower than a low thing.

Happy Jack has just kindly offered to lend me my old Precision fretless for Sunday so I am sorted - at least on the bass front! I shall not be practising on a bass until probably Saturday so that the immediate swelling can go down.

Well this is not how I expected Wenesday to pan out!

Unfortunately I have to take a client to Guns n Roses tonight at the O2 and they are standing tickets too. Expect me right at the back, away from any mosh pit ...

Yep, expect Axl to wander on stage about 10.30 to a p*ssed off crowd, 25 minutes before the O2 organisers pull the plug

I feel for you mate, reminds me of the time I stuck a stanley knife into my middle finger - three stitches & a month off. Not nice at all.

If Saturday/Sunday prove to be too much even with the fretless, I'm more than happy to offer my services as a dep. Fretless only for me though (but I'd play ball & stick some foam under the bridge and back the treble off).

Pete.

Ah that sounds nasty! But at least it was your fingers and not your neck or anything! Good luck with the gig and healing and such. I'm sure you know, but since noone has mentioned it, ice and elevation is supposed to help with the swelling.

These things always seem to happen at the worst possible times - my girlfriend managed to break her little toe AND put her passport through the washing machine the day before we went to amsterdam a few months ago. Somehow, we got the passport dried in time and they let her on the flight, but her toe looked really painful to walk on. A few strong "coffees" definitely helped with that, though! :)

Mr C! Vodka for breakfast will always end up in tears.

Going against the grain. As Mr Costello would say accidents will happen. Lay off the bass until it's healed. There will always be more gigs and people will understand. Don't play through the pain and lengthen the healing and maybe even cause more problems.

I had the 'boxers break' as the quack referred to it in my right hand a few years ago and took his advice to just let it heal. Didn't take long. No problems at all with it now.

Actually, you might be getting a PM about that on Friday - depends how my plan goes :)
