To clarify Lord Sausage, where I used the term flashy in my description, it is not saying that a bass player can't be the main focal point of the band, or the one playing the most interesting complex flashy (in a good way) licks. I'm not saying a bass player should be the boring person who stands at the back playing roots (or 3rds if feeling adventurous). What I am saying is that if a bass player spends his time just wanting to show off flashy (or pick another adjective) skills, to the detriment of the band or the music they're playing, then they really need to be asking themselves 'am I doing my band / the music justice'. If you can play all the licks and still keep the feel of the music then more power to you. It's great seeing it being more and more commonplace for bass players to be stepping forward. My point was merely, better to be solid than someone playing flashy licks who can't get through a set without screwing up because they haven't got the basics sorted. If you can be solid and dependable and get through a set without any screw ups, then go ahead and be flashy and solid at the same time. Even better! But just being flashy, yet unable to remember when you transition into a chorus / bridge / middle 8 or what order the chords are in, is the wrong way round and wrong priorities for any musician, but especially a bass player.
Yea but if you are being flashy and screwing up, then you aren't being flashy you are being sh*t!

I detest the word 'flashy' being used as some kind of negative. I hate that a bass player just has to be solid. I can't stand the phrase less is more like it's is an imperative and if you don't play like this you are a twat Music can be so many things. Many genres, styles etc Sometimes the bass doesn't just have to support the rhythm. Sometimes you support the melody, harmony be the counterpoint. Sometime you have to be solid, occasionally flashy. Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more. Sometimes it's goldilocks and just right. Music is more than one thing. is it a compliment?.. i don't know. It's not a negative? Others opinions of my playing, positive or negative don't really register!
So following on from the recent 'glad I'm not sensitive' thread I've noticed a recurring theme where so many people seem to be in bands where other members cannot take constructive criticism or don't appreciate the role of every band member. I guess I'm lucky that in the band I'm in we've all agreed to be 100% honest when it comes to any issues we may have (generally when writing new songs) and we all take and give criticism with no hard feelings. I suppose none of us having an ego is a big help with that. My main question is just why do people stay in bands with people who don't seem to be worth the time and effort?
Because i plan to kill them off one at a time over a couple of years!

How long do you actually spend rehearsing?
Yeah that probably was a bit toolish of me but telling kids to practice getting stoned and drunk to help with their playing is a best pretty dubious!
Ha ha, totally dubious! As if you'd say that to 18 yr olds! Madness. I wouldn't do it! -
Indeed he is. Can`t go wrong with The Duffster!

Thumbs up for the "King of beers"!
He's the reason i started playing. I heard the intro to Right next door to hell and thought "what the f*** is that! I wanna do that!" So did!
That`s my fave track/album of theirs too.
Isn't Duff one of your favourite players or influence too? (IIRC) Great minds and all that!
Hopefully most music colleges can do better for their students than burned out old potheads giving piss poor advice. The bit in bold is one of the single most ludicrous things I've ever read . For us it's generally a three hour rehearsal but it's a startup and were trying to put a solid set together as well as getting used to playing with one another. I practice anywhere from an hour to three a day depending on how much time I can spare. Learning new stuff, polishing stuff I already know and playing just for the fun of it.
Ha ha. I've played the Hackney Empire doing a show where the guitarist was on coke, drinking vodka and tonic from a mineral water bottle. He was excellent. All over it. The stories he told me about pro musos on pro tours make a pint and a spliff look tee total. The guy who gave me the piss poor advice was a genius. Dead now suprisingly. He taught me proper composition and arrangement for jazz big bands. Writing and arranging and scoring for all the instruments. He taught us the Berklee college music theory course. I went on to get a degree in music from York from what i learned of that burned out pothead. I learned next to f*** all a uni! -

If you can't have a drink n smoke and still play then you need to practice more. I don't mean getting proper wasted but nicely buzzed. One maybe two beers n a doob. No doob on gig day tho. Though you do need control to keep it at that level. I don't always do it but when do I don't play worse. If anything I play better. I understand if people are getting twatted then it is a problem. When I was at music college a lecturer who was a pro muso and had been for 40 odd yrs, played on the strip in Hamburg same time as the Beatles and all said to me and others. "Go home have a smoke and a beer and practice your ass off. There will come times when you have to gig in that state. Better be ready." Best homework ever. We all did. -
I see you´re a die-hard fan I bought their first CD and after Bernard left, I lost hope on the band.. Still, their 1st album is a MUST - nice songs, melodies and basslines!
i think the album after Bernard left with "trash" on was pretty good. I think trash is probably their best tune
I wish more bassists thought of the bass guitar as a guitar with less strings. We'd get better bass lines.
Or maybe not let the instrument define what you play and think in a totally musical and theoretical way!
I think this relates to The Funk's 1st post, every time I hear the intro to 'son of a preacher man' I start singing 'hits from the bong' by cypress hill! Its a terrible thing to say but its the only time I'm disappointed to hear Dusty Springfield sing!
If anything just cos you done get the immortal line of" there's water inside don't spill it. Smells like sh*t on the carpet"

Two bottles of carling cherry cider every practice. Always feel fine!

You're only as good as your drummer
Lord Sausage replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
I've done a few musical theatre tours and on them worked with pro drummers, ex royal northern college a couple of them. They earn about 50 k a yr drumming. Some play for bbc orchestras, Liverpool phill etc. everyone rated gadd as the best. -
I'm 36. I've got brothers aged in their early 20's. Both musicians. One lives near me in the north west. One in Sheffield. They both love rock music, play in bands. When I go to their gigs or jam nights there are loads of people in their age group there. They play more modern stuff but still play classic rock to. Everyone seems to know it and love it. You teens round here in guns n roses, nirvana, Acdc tops. More than when I was a teenager in the 90s when all the kids were into rave and dance.
-
A load of bollocks. Turned it off after a couple of mins. I started watching it as there had been some great programmes about rock n roll on bbc4 last couple of weeks. This wasn't. I'll tell you what happened to rock n roll. It lost the roll!

I was bought up on a council estate oop north! Not every musician is middle class. These 'dives' to me are normal pubs. Filled with bloody poor people! Oh the indignity. Just because these pubs are shitholes doesn't mean everyone wants to kick your head in. I've played venues from 'dives' to venues the that hold a few thousand. I've found 'dives' to be some of the best gigs in terms of people enjoying themselves.

What are you listening to right now?
Lord Sausage replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion

I might just start reading the NME again!
Lord Sausage replied to ras52's topic in General Discussion
NME which stands for Smash Hits for w***ers. I grew up in the 90's so have no idea of its 70's, 80's heyday. -
An interesting story about the struggles of a musician
Lord Sausage replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
Struggles!........pah! Some musicians really struggle. They regularly have to play sex on fire or moondance. Tell him to come back when he's done that! -
I don't think BC claim any rights to it at all.

All copyright and ownership of any material posted on Basschat remains with the writer/composer (ie. you!). Unless of course you're about to license something for a small (or preferably large) fortune. In which case I'm personally entitled to 71%. It's all in the small print here: Yep, it's that small
Thanks gents.

What's the script with stuff entered in these competitions in relation to ownership. If I've entered something does BC have any rights on it or is it mine?
When the spotify example of James Jamerson playing is Motorhead's Ace of Spades you know it's total sh**e. I actually knew before that but it's something to say.
