1. I'm starting to think jazz basses are cool :s
2. I love the dead sound and feel of the ghs boomers, once i wear them in a bit
3. just played this bass today. Really good bass and i compared it to the 70's classic MIM and 60's roadworn jazz basses. The tone ws great for me, lots of mids with a bit of growl, what i would describe a marcus miller tone. It made the roadworn sound very artificial and sloppy and the MIM didnt quite get the same tone. However, to get this tone i think you can get the same and more out of the Marcus Miller signiture. The one i played on really was amazing and i think rather than buying the squier i will save up for the Marcus Miller. But all in all i give the squier an 8/10..... 9/10 for tone, 6/10 for looks and quality, and 10/10 for value. If i was buying today on the basses i tried, i would leave the MIM and the Road worn for the squier which is not what i expected
4. i too was going to say musicman sub, or a used MIM 70's classic jazz bass
5. These come up for between £750 and £900 here and on ebay. I personally wouldn't pay more than £800 for one because thats how much i value them as. Different people have different valuations. In a shop it would be tagged at £1k but most shops barter on these prices
6. how is it despite me knowing i really dont like the flea bass, after seeing that i really want one
7.
I think I've worked out that the core has gone in the string, I'll get a replacement tomorrow but playing it is amazing, what an instrument and so physically exhausting.
are you playing with a bow? its the mental strength to remember how to use the blummin thing that shatters me But OMG it sounds awsome, even for a cheep chinese! Hopefuly it is just the string, it looks very nice
8. I didnt try any of my current basses before i bought them, to save money more than anything. And the ones i have now are perfect. Although iv had a few crappy basses, one being an epiphone thunderbird, it got moved on rather quick. Also an american deluxe jazz bass, just didnt deliver anything near its value and the build quality was shoddy. It was a 2000 model
9. Does anyone own either of these? Im confused as to what the differences are and which to get.... Also unsure if the fake book is bass parts or piano charts of his compositions
10. Just knock the bridge up a bit, sorted out the action on my DB
11. just out of interest does anyone know how they did this? it cant have been using a gate, and i thought everything was recorded onto tape.
12. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=fretless bigger thread on that link above
13. having finally got to see malcom, what a nice guy! he showed me the problem and fixed it in a second for free
14.
you mean the rich bass players favourite toyshop ?
I suppose you could say the same about the gallery though
15.
It certainly was a looker! hmmm a '66 Jazz.... and the GAS starts... The new albumn is out in October.. I think the first track on Jools is the title track to the new album.
It is indeed a '66. His alleva coppolo is for sale on bassgear.co.uk which i will buy if it hasnt gone in 10 years HMV have the album release date down as 1 november
16.
Here's where I may differ from some of the above, a bad bass player is boring.
thats more a bad musician than bass player. Also how would you know that his playing hasnt already made the track 10x better? You would need to mute the bass. I think anyone can play bass, the difference between us and monkeys is the use of expression through the instrument
17.
Surely stores should see the problems with their stock before potential customers get their mitts on them. Players shouldn't have to have their time wasted by poorly setup instruments or find problems like loose hardware and so on. It does get my goat My wife is on her way to Florida this week and so the plan is to buy something there. There's still an advantage of buying in the US esp. if it's used or demo!
I went to florida about 8 weeks ago. My advice would be to do your homework on what shops there are and where they are, print out detailed maps. The size of florida really shocked me and music shops there seemed well hidden in Miami and Naples. The other thing is use the exchange rate to calculate what basses are cheaper there than here, because some come out to the same price and some will save you roughly £2-300. If you go to the bass central in orlando please check out the Elrick basses and write a review because magazines across the pond have rated them very highly.
18. Musicman20 your not alone. Iv played on 3 different skylines, the 55-02, darryl jones 5 and a joe osborn 5. They all had a few areas where the quality wasnt great, such as; a tuning peg was a little loose and finish on the body was a little rough. Compared to musicman where i have seen just 1 bad, i don't see how with such poor quality control lakland can charge the same amount. to the OP: iv spent a long time trying out lots of basses and i know what i like and dont like so it might be worth investing some time into touring shops and testing some out. Or compare the specs of the basses you like that you own to other 5 string models and getting something similar.
19.
How much are they? Its time got something loke this
If you go onto the specs page it tells you, £139
20.
Bad move dude - these are the ones I use and they are absolutely the mutts nuts... They are a bit pricing but the quality of the filters is simply amazing, all the clarity and quality of 'natural' sound - without any of the ear-f***ing frequencies - a very sound investment indeed. M
urb, how long does it take between ordering a set, having a mould made, and recieving them?
21.
I'm staggered. I bought a very cheap and fairly beaten up bass off eBay that was badly in need of some TLC and M&J Healey provided it ... not once but twice. Maybe he thought it was worth the investment in me as a customer so I'd come back to him when I need a proper upright. Great guy, went out of his way to get me a workable bass out of what I'd purchased, and for a reasonable price. I'm surprised he couldn't help you. Andy
Just to say i tried again with M&J and as soon as i mentioned a few of there previous customers they said they would look at it. Maybe they just get so many customers they tend to only do work for people they know wont give them hassle
22. not missing anything, just a silly price. When the Gallery had Paul Turners BN5 it was only £2100. And that had a name to it at least
