I know of somebody who is - although to be fair, they don't seem to be around too much of late. Falsifying documents is on a hiding to nothing - especially if you get caught. Anyway, funny story about somebody trying to pull a fast one. The wife of a basschatter on here used to be the claims handler for a sizeable insurance company and out of the blue, I got a message saying, "what do you reckon this is?" from the fellow Basschatter. What it was, on face value, was a picture of a genuine Fender J bass with a close up of the headstock stating P bass with maybe some modifications. He was claiming for a USA P bass of a much, much higher value. We thought it may have been a bitsa but it piqued our interest enough to have a closer look. Given the guys telephone manner, the wife had her suspicions about the validity of the claim. We mused over the photo and figured out that it was a bastardised Mark Hoppus bass and what was being claimed for was a much, much more expensive USA P bass. I would loved to have been a fly on the wall when he got the message, that despite his attempt at defrauding the insurance company, they would honour the payment out for a Mark Hoppus bass. Bet the guy thought he was quids in when he had a seemingly wet behind the ears when it comes to basses claims handler. Just goes to show eh? You never know who's eyes things end up under.

You'd be stupid to falsify the value. You never know who is on basschat that works for HMRC.

Thought as much. I was always confused how Cornford amps seemed to get vendors to stick to firm prices as dictated by the manufacturers - aka price fixing. Also illegal at the time it was happening.

Absolutely - in an attempt to keep distributors in each company buoyant. And of course, supply prices between different zones aren't necessarily the same.

I can see why they wouldn't though. Small, dinky, cheap is appealing. And given the pandemic, the sales of big rigs are probably screwed for a while. The Elf may shift due to people having money burning a hole in their pocket and being stuck at home.

Yup - but people will soon catch on when they try to buy them. It's true though - to the casual glance, the price differences look massive. Maybe the UK retailers will start advertising price plus VAT to address that?

Ampeg always had a bit of a head start I was always disappointed with the form factor of the Reidmar. Not really dinky enough. Great sounding amp though.

The BAM200 is quite a bit (a lot) cheaper than the Elf too. Maybe the TE name justifies that.... or not?

Crumbs - after reading that, I realised that my first Trace head didn't do too well either. Played it in the shop - and the thing was fine. Got it home, was good for about half an hour, then blew a fuse. Thing went back to the shop and I was given a Warwick combo for a loaner (I was a bit miffed given I had just shelled out a load of money and couldn't get a replacement TE unit from the vendor since it had died literally the same day...). A completely new unit was delivered back to me eventually - after about a month - and it remained with me until I sold it and a matching 1048H (that seemed to weight as much as the sun) to some bloke in Wales. I didn't miss it and I certainly wouldn't be caught up in some sort of nostalgia thing because compared to todays offering, they are pretty pants.

You are absolutely right - in the UK, the SS amps that you were going through were generally pants HH, scrap heap junk stuff. So Trace, being able to deliver "normally" was a bit of a novelty... And lets not forget, these Trace watts were normally demonstrated with multiple cabs... moving a lot of air... so yes, these Trace amps sounded massive to that 1x15 crackly piece of junk that it was being pitted against.
