Wow, great news! Congratulations, Alex!! Wait a minute... Didn't someone on this forum say that internationally-famous professional bass players won't have heard of Barefaced and would never buy their gear even if they had? And that most Barefaced customers were actually BassChat members??* *Yes, they did. Just to be clear.
Let's focus on the "most" word in that sentence. Anybody would think Ampeg has just lost their whole artist roster! Also... I would like all those that googled TC's name upon reading this thread to put their hands up... :-p Did TC buy this rig? And if he did, did he pay full retail?
I'm confused; so he's playing through the industry standard 8x10... that is an Ampeg rig isn't it?
Indeed - so the biggest endorsement to date is based on 10s - which Alex originally said were fundamentally flawed! OK - only one column is producing treble to mimic that of a PA line array - but going from the mics, the sandman couldn't careless about that! Having said all that, congrats to Alex for landing TC. That's got to be an exciting prospect.

Heft - from heavy amp, or from lightweight amp & pedals?
A better test would probably be a gig. Any benefits in the dynamic (imagined or otherwise!) would probably be lost in a half-empty room. Personally speaking, I'm under no illusion - the whole concept of 'heft' is lost on the audience. It's about the tactile feedback of standing in front of your cab, feeling the notes.
Completely agree. Indeed - the feedback you get from playing your bass and what comes out of the speaker next to you, doesn't track with the audience because they aren't involved in the playing aspect. -
Nice work. Whats the synth?

I quite like the Neutrik clear rings you can buy so you can label on the XLR. Very useful when presented with a loom box and a shed load of identical looking cables!
-
Go with OBBM's classic tweed!
-
A lot of people are going to chime in OBBM but I believe he only makes black cables. For a coloured cable, I don't think you can beat a Van Damme with neutrik plugs. Get Designacable to make them to your spec from their website or from their eBay shop... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gold-Neutrik-Guitar-Jack-to-Jack-Lead-Long-Van-Damme-Cable-3m-6m-10m-Electric-/161211536768?var=&hash=item2588f4d580:m:mQp66EkdbGBr1aeXINo4YVQ I have used a lot of Van Damme cables and never had any fail - and of course, they sound great too. Good enough for Abbey Road, Air and the Beeb, good enough for me etc...

That's a nice rig. :-) Spookily similar to mine in fact - I'm running 745s with 8004s with GLD80/DL32R
I don't want the sub 80hz on stage.
Indeed! -
I managed to leave home without my amp head for a little three piece function gig a couple of weeks ago. Just used a DI through my HK Actor DX rig and stuck a little bit in the wedge and was a lovely quiet stage! Might do it more often.
I always prefer to go that way now - the last three or four years has been me, my bass and a microbass 2 preamp into the PA. Its great - especially if the whole band are inears. The band just sounds better out front. I love the thunderous lows of subs without having the mush on stage.

Heft - from heavy amp, or from lightweight amp & pedals?
This is a spectacularly illogical poll. If you honestly think that no class D amps can do heft then why on earth would some £200 9V powered effect pedal be able to add that heft? What I call 'heft' is the ability of a rig to produce unencumbered weighty sonic output below 80Hz. Others may consider it something else...
Quite! Don't you know that putting go faster stripes on a car actually makes it go faster? :-p -
What a difference a string makes. DR Fat Beams.

Should say that I favour hi beams though. -
Anyone have experience on how long they last before needing replacing? Wouldnt mind giving them a go
Depends how often you play and how sweaty you are. I play a lot but sweat very little - I tend to manage 5-6 months. -
I love a good jazz bass but the control set up is flawed for me... A balance / volume / tone setup would be far better IMO.
Agreed - I hate the vol/vol thing. Although a balance doesn't yield the same results as a vol/vol.

I've yet to find anything in the same ballpark as DR - both in terms of performance and sadly price :-( -
Heft - from heavy amp, or from lightweight amp & pedals?
EBS_freak replied to Lozz196's topic in Amps and Cabs
That's what I was trying to say - if lack of heft is due to the power amp then a pedal wouldn't help. But if heft is just a nice dollop of bass boost in the preamp then it just comes down to preamp design rather than the power stage.
And you can't fix that with a pedal if the preamp is HPFing before the poweramp. -
I use a class d amp run flat and no pedals... I've no idea what heft is but this set up sounds deeper, punchier and more powerful than any I've had in the past... It is of course possible that my ears are not capable of detecting heft or any other perceived tonal advantage of a rig weighing the same as a family of hippos, but if it's a failing on my part I'm glad I have it. I couldn't be happier with my gear at the moment.
Which amp are you using?
