I use Rotosound 88 TruBass on my Telecaster bass (the same pickup, but in neck position) and they seem to be made for each other. Tapewounds are just great.
Gota +1 that, got the tele bass spiceal too loaded with Picato black nylon tape wound flats n it sounds awsome, the humbucker is a great pickup n part of what drew me to the new pawnshop Mustang

Great little bass, i bought one three weeks ago from Navada music in Portsmouth. Although i think the oly white/blue stripe is the preetyest i chose the red one to go with my amp and cab (both red). finish is second to none. I A/Bd against an aray of fenders and gibbos and the Mustang was streets ahead of everything I tryed. I had been saving for a new bass and had enough in the bank to take my pick of what was on offer upto and including an american P. Love the sound and feel of this little bass, i'm thinking of loading it with some tape wound's ( have them on all my basses). i'm a big fan of these.
I got the sunburst finish, my own favourite; but I am fitting a new tortoiseshell pick guard! Just a personal thing, but I can't live with that white pearloid one fitted as standard. I just prefer tortoiseshell, which I think looks 100% better on sunburst. As far as strings go, the (D'Addario Chromes) flats sound great; mellow, lots of low end 60's thump that really suits me but remember, sound is subjective and you probably need to try them to see if they give you the sound you're looking for. One thing to remember is that you'll need medium scale to allow for the through body stringing.
http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=194&productname=ETB92M_Tapewound_Bass__Medium__50_105__Medium_Scale My string of choise at the mo, got these on My Landing L1 and on my Miky Wayy Mustang n love em. Did have a set of chrome flats on the Landing L1 befor though, would try em on the new Mustang but there to short. Did sound good though. Generaly play punk, metal grunge kinda stuff n the tapes work well for that sound + no finger noise ever Completly agree about the tort pick guard on the sunburst though (would a been my choise too) I got the red to go with my amp, BH250 (red face plate) and OBC115 Blood Orange You can get to some pics from one of my earlyer posts on this thread but no pics of the Mustang up till i get back
Since the original posting, I've had a trip into the "Long Scale - 5 string" territory.............biggest mistake ever!! Didn't like the long scale and just couldn't come to terms with the "5-string thing" always mistaking the bottom B for bottom E resulting in bum notes being dropped in the band rehearsals.......not good!!!! Kept going back to my Gibson SG. SO, i've sold the 5-string precision and bought one of the new "pawn shop" Fender Mustang........WOW!!.absolutely superb; immaculate build & finish, excellent tonal variety and of course my beloved short scale!! I shall re-string this bass with D'Addario Chrome flat wounds and then it will probably be my gigging 'bass of choice"
I got one too, last fri from Navada music, they had 3 in stock (one in each colour) I got the red one and it realy is the muts nuts. Its still got original strings on at mo as i am away working for a couple a weeks. Let me know how it is with the flats, prob guna get some black nylon tape wound flats to try on when i get back to uk. what colour did you get ? I tryed most of the fender range befor chosing the mustang and I have to say the feel, tone and finish was better than anything else i tryed, even beter than the American P that i have wanted for the last two years (and could never aford). This bass will be a long term keeper for shaw

I have run through an orange terror (guitar amp) into an early eminence g12h 55hz in a closed back sealed cab, had great OD/distorted sound with some old mulards, no clean tone though. theres a guy on here selling a small traynor guitar amp might be worth asking him what sort a sound he gets. also the hughes and kettner tubemeister heads look good for this and there cheaper than the terror heads. theres allso a thread on here for the new ashdown cmt15 tube bass head, watch the vid it seems very high gain with a good distorted sound when pushed
The amp is very loud.
you want loud, you should hear mine through my OBC115 and RS112, now that is proper loud lol -
Good thinking, though I heard that the bit about turning the pickup is an old-wives tale. Others will know better than me, or have you noticed a distinct difference yourself? I assume that the extra string distance means that you have less issues with the wrap on strings getting in the way, therefore more choice of string brands?
Def notice a diference when you move the pickup poles a little, same as you do when you chance where you pick the strings. part of the reason for the string through mod was to give a beter choise of strings
Interesting idea with the string thru on the EB3; not sure if I like the look of it or not, though not much is worse that the Godawful 3-pointer that Gibson are insisting on these days. What bridge have you used on that?
Its a tune o matic with lock down sadles, got it off evilbay. front feruls are fender telecaster with the centres re drilled and the rear feruls are from the evilbay too. works well with good internation. also turned the bridge pickup round to make it a little more bassie
Nice one , how does it compare to your other shorties? Liking the choice of guard, maybe I should get a vintage blond for mine?
The first thing you notice is the weight, its a lot hevier than any of my other bases. The neck also feels a lot chunkier, and fret spacing is not as comftable as my 30.5" scales. I keep meaning to check it against a P neck coz it feels just like my old Mike Dirnt's neck. To be honest bought it as much on looks as sound. I do love the tone of that big humbucker though. I have a few more mods planed for the future. Guna change the bridge and mod to strung through the body (its a tele so it should be strung through) the J pick-up is a bit weaker than the humbucker so might try somthing a bit hotter. also some more cosmetic stuff, bridge controle plate and knobs in black chrome should see it done. I did consider fitting a third pickup (the single coil type in the other model) but having tryed one a few weeks ago im not guna bother coz it was no match for the tone of the speical. Intrestingly i tryed the new pawn shop Mustang the other day, it has the humbucker too. Sounded wicked and will be my next purchase. as for pick-guards ? thats a hard one. black on blond looks good, a pearl would bling it up. a white pearl mite look good, It dose on the new oly white pawn shop mustang. My fender jag (in oly white) looks good with its tort guard mabe try n get some photos of difrent types print samples out n put them next to your bass? worth noting i made my own coz i couldnt find anyone selling them though. Im to tight to pay 50 plus for a custom job lol. You will notice all my basses have matching pick-guards :-)
