I remember Gordons work with Nightwing.... great frontman!
Saw them twice; still got a 12" single of theirs - on red vinyl! Great, but not as good as Strife I thought, all academic now, it was along time ago.
He was playing a Sadowsky Jazz when I saw them at the Isilington gig.
Thanks, I did wonder, the Mrs said she could see an "S" at the beginning & it obviously wasn't a Squier, a Schecter.......... or a Satellite

Just left a Gearstalkers' paradise at The Animals with Steve Cropper's last night, in Morecambe, Lancs. of their UK leg of this tour. 2 x 335's, an old off white & battered Precision, Cropper's custom Peavey Tele, 2 x Marshall Bluesbreakers (belonged to the support band "The Stumble" who are excellent btw, bought one of their CDs and would definitely see them in their own rite, as did also a very nice CAR Tele, rosewood board - but you can't have everything) Peter Barton's new Ashdown with 8 x 10" - and Danny's (who owns the 335s) cream AC30. Stumble's bassist had a copy Jazz but I couldn't make out the logo & he was too mackied to ask when I saw him. I saw a few of the punters trying to date the Gibson's screwing their eyes up behind the headstocks in the gloom.

IIRC it was 1978 when a boxed set of singles was released; I bought a couple of them, "Get Back" was one can't remember the other. Nor can I remember whether there was a reason at the time for the release. They were all in green card sleeves & I believe each one had a contemporary pic of the band on the reverse. I don't think it was an anniversary of any kind, maybe just someone thought it was about time. But it was, because I remember the times well, when the charts were chock full of bland.
I think guitar, bass and drum based pop/rock will have to seriously decline in popularity before that happens.
New wave was pretty much at it's peak but wasn't dominating the charts, it was about on par with disco - and a whole lot of cack. Since then there's been a fair few other sets, remasters, re-remasters; much of it I'm guessing to be aimed at completist fans who feel compelled to buy them. I know for a fact it's often the tactic behind many remaster sets.

Could we please also mention in despatches Mr icastle, for excellent comms nicely put during the fact not after, which nipped one while it was mid-flower rather than budding, but did stop the shears being used. -
Sometimes we need a little nudge to put us back on a sensible track...
....... which often involves a stabbing pain in the lower back or left hand (for righties) that tells you "You don't wanna be doing that".

A woman I know is a hair-dresser & has reaction to most of the lotions they use. I thought she'd had an accident when she was all strapped up one day. She swears by that Neutrogena, but I can't think of a way around losing the toughened finger tips without starting your troubles again.

Usually just pick one out that I know they'll recognise, depending on who it is; though in general I tend to shy away from such malarky because I tell them it's a group not a solo instrument. But usually "Town Called malice", or it's cousin "Lust For Life", possibly show them a bass' day-job with "Can't Turn You Loose" then someone avariably asks "What's the extra knob for over there?" (sometimes they mean me, sometimes the extra knob on the bass) so I turn it and do "Purple Haze".

Anyone seen this little punk before...show off!
Big_Stu replied to Lord Sausage's topic in General Discussion
IIRC I first saw that a couple or so years ago. Incredible what he does, and relevant to the piece, a little bit high in the mix but I guess he's their "feature". It'd be interesting to hear what he/they are doing now. -
Pretty much pointless I believe, apart from a bit of ego stroking. After 6 minutes I've still no idea what the different sounds from the pickups individually are, if you can blend them how they sound at different ratios of blend & how much sweep there is on the tone pots. Any missing technical details will be searchable on their site I assume, but to get sound comparisons needs another film or audio clip which negates that one.
Well.. as far as influence : I think I have an argument which you don't have. I'm Flemish speaking and I learned English through Beatles records.
Yeah, but you have frites, waffles, frikandel, bitteburgers, your chocolate and Palm beer. You're still ahead!

I'm especially enjoying the extra 5 pages after the reply from the person the thread was directed at. That reply being a one-line "ain't no thang" type all is well reply. This is BassChat!

How do you know if a bassist is 'good' or not?
Big_Stu replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Fair comment. But as musicians, aren't we a little more discerning than just listening to the 'celeb' musicians, and draw influence and inspiration from a much more diverse catalogue?
I haven't heard many non-"celeb" bassists that did anything noteworthy (present company excepted of course Nige). I suppose if they did they would be heading towards being a celeb. -
Right you are chaps, I'm off to look at microphones and giggle like a 9 year old in a sweet shop
Now if you'd said Stax .................

How do you know if a bassist is 'good' or not?
Big_Stu replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
To me it's a very deep question; depends on so much; not least the mood & surroundings of the song at the time. Many times I'll enjoy bass because it's so subtle or at least non-intrusive that it's part of a sublime blend, you don't notice it's there but you can be damn sure you would if it wasn't. But there again where would songs such as "Town Called Malice" be where it's such an integral part. That's opposed to songs like the afore-mentioned "Al" where as well as being an integral part it's also featured - if for eg. a bassist dropped out of a gig where that song was to be played, presumably it would be covered to an extent by a keyboard bass-line, the keyboard player would have the option of exploring somewhere else with that break, but would it add or detract from the song. -
I don't really wish or want anybody else to feel the same way if you don't like them thats ok by me.
THIS is the thought that's been missing a LOT from this thread. I don't get the decrying or insulting of people who don't share the same tastes as another poster; making out the ones who oppose the thought are tasteless or malicious in what they say. Dictating what a person should or shouldn't appreciate is dangerous - and should be against the ethic of any musician. I'm relieved that there's been a few posts not exhalting them as much as many do - as well as crediting Chuck Berry as a writer/player. I'd add the Everly Brothers to that list who were obviously an influence too.
BTW i love the beatles, i just don't need to feel that they are magicians musically.
As I understand it, none of them could read or write music (I've certainly seen it written a few times, whether it's true or not is another thing), so I'm guessing that actual theory didn't play a large part in their composition skills & they wouldn't have even been able to follow the recent posts. Does that mean it would have been a whole lot of trial & error until something came up (at least in their early writings until they learnt what worked) or another case of why even though they couldn't write music they were so good at it, and were therefore even more inspired?

I'm selling a bass, pics coming soon, make me an offer.

That's no good, I wanted the one with all metal parts soaked in paint-stripper for a week & the pots nice & crackly so you have an excuse to spend even more on an upgrade. -
Hi All Thanks for the advice, really usefull. I have spoken to Aaron at Armstrong Pickups who says he can sort them out for me. Anyone had any experience of Armstrong Pickups?
I haven't personally; but I know a few who have; all very happy. Also had a couple of Kent's era pickups are they were great. If you go that route you should be very happy with the result, though there is at least one of those pickups on Fleabay just now, they come up fairly often.
