1.
Yes, me. I am geographically challenged and the vast majority of my basses have been bought on the strength of specs and pics at distance. If you live near a great bass shop or have easily satisfied mainstream tastes then good for you, but we're not all the same.
Ditto We have one good bass shop in about a 60 mile radius and the prices are, well, more than i would pay from Basschat, Ebay etc. Most of my basses are bought unseen - if i don't get on with them or see something else more shiny i sell em.
2. Amazing. I knew you would do it. Well done. I'd have probably sh*t myself. Did you at least touch cloth for a minute or two?
3. I am more excited about your gig than my own. Take that Sperm Whale by the balls and give it some. Wishing you an enormous hunk of luck and fortune. Smell you later.
4.
And then they were shifted?
Yes, they were
5.
I just couldn't imagine buying a bass and then not playing it live.
I agree although i have had a few basses that would read "Only gigged once!"
6. This thread has is it all. Can't wait for the climax and post gig pillow talk.
7. 24 Years. Good man Welcome to ze forum. Jerry
8. So far i have tried: SD Basslines Quarterpounders Fender Custom Shop 60s Wizard 64s Lollar Of course its all down to taste. I love the Lollars - the most defined Jazz Bass sound i have ever had. They are on a Hamer Cruise Bass which is like a Jazz bass but made properly
9. We did something similar. It was a live competition - series of heats bla bla bla. We got into the final and won a prize - a photo shoot. On one hand it was nice knowing that we got lots of votes etc. On the other hand the organisers did very well not paying a penny for bands to play lots of gigs. We didn't take it seriously, didn't expect anything and weren't disappointed
10. Hi All defectors welcome Jerry
11. Another idea from the disturbed depths of Mr Smiths mind. Got a call went "hey i need some bass on a track. I have written a Prog Latin track." FFS the guy is nuts. I had a bash. This is really the sketching out recording to see what to do with the song. Pls ignore quality of sounds. Its the idea thats important (crazy). 12. Sack him immediately and get someone nice. If not i guarantee you it will only get worse. If the band starts gigging you will be spending a lot of time with these people. Edit - just seen you have it sorted
13.
We are three very different looking people in my band. Up until March this year that's what we looked like on stage too. Someone I know who has sold lots and lots of records in his career saw us and said to me "I like what you're doing but you don't look like a band" So we had a think and came up with the cheap shirt and suits idea. What I noticed was. We felt like a band. We got extra confidence on stage and played better. And the best bit. People came up to us after gigs and bought lots more CDs than we usually sell. I think it's because we were instantly identifiable and had a level of sepration from looking like an audience member. Very little cost outlay. My machine washable suit cost £49! One of the best decisions we've made.
You look like a larger, less good looking version of me
14. Also look out for Jamie Abersold mp3s. You can pan either way and remove bass or keys keeping the drum track.
15. I did a gig with a band once and this was their approach. Few days before the gig someone went to a charity shop with a tenner and bought as much cheap sh*t as they could. It was placed inside a bin liner and taken to the gig. At the gig the band got undressed and then in a free for all grabbed from the bin liner anything they wanted. The weakest member (guitarist obviously) got left with the dregs They looked ridiculous for about 2 minutes and then i kind of got used to it.
16.
Umm, not wanting to sound negative, but I tried a double bass a few months ago, and despite Clarky showing me the correct technique, it felt like playing a f***ing sperm whale.
I am not the type to LOL or even type "LOL" but in this case i was ROFL.
17. Depends on so many things. It could be a disaster or a revelation but please do tell afterwards and let us know how you get on. If it were me i'd be doing some chord sheets so that there would be something to hang on to when/if it starts going tits up. Good luck.
18. I don't care as long as they have Dobly
19. Nice clean right hand technique (just realised that sounds a bit kinky but hey ho). Good for you girl.
20.
I think I've had a similar 'Bacharach' moment with 'Nard Edwards. Never really liked what I regarded as 'disco' but I've had a personal soul revival and listening to his playing in Chic and Sister Sledge, more particularly to learn it for my function band, its quite simple but so, so difficult to play with anything like the same feel and groove as Bernard. Thinking of You is my current fave.
+1 easy but not easy. Its in the nuance which is personal and therefore hard to replicate.
21.
The G&L sounds nice, always liked the sound of them [made a mistake in selling mine] I think the notes in the bridge section should be semitones descending from the Db, [That's what Marcus plays on the original] Tenths work nicely. Good stuff though. Garry
Thanks Garry I'll try that sequence. I was in such a rush to get something down that i didn't refer to the original track at all and just hacked away as usual Great basses though! Really impressed and got to wonder how much better the US one might be?
22. This is the G&L Tribute L2000 that i just traded. Had to wait about 3 weeks for the new DR strings to lose their zippiness. Grabbed a midi file of Grover Washington Jnr track, Just The Two of Us, and played along to the keys and drums part. Only for a minute or so... 23. What works in jam situations is mainly listening and responding. Not just to the drums but to all fellow jammers. The trick is to do something different whilst still supporting the groove (unless you are soloing and even then highlighting the chord changes with your note choices will help the listener).
24. Definitely get one and make your own mind up. +1 to keeping the missus sweet with a meal and stuff too.
