1. I never sell my gear. Theres been weeks living off tinned soup or plain rice, i've sold a few dvds but never my gear. It'd make life easier but I always find the money from other avenues.
2. Yeah the set I've put on my project seem to be really shiny and not nearly as thumpy as I was expecting having heard them on other basses. And the first set the e string broke with my thumb resting on it. I'm hoping that they'll dull down after a while though, with my filthy hands. The roundwounds on my jazz are 7 years old and have more low down thump than the la bellas do.
3. I bought an 80p cheapo jack from "pikeys second hand and electronics" about a month ago as a temporary fix, already starting to lose contact. Invest in a quality component.
4. Yeah, I've got dings and scratches on my bass purely from bedroom practise. Playing live it never gets a scratch. These things happen, don't worry.
5. Gig bag, I had a hard case once, it weighed a ton so I ditched it. Way I see it I don't need that much protection, instruments always go on top of the pile of crap and it's not like i'm gonna throw it into the wall when I get to the gig. There was a point where I just carried my bass slung over my shoulder much like an axe with no case at all. The only dents it has are from playing in my room and not having a stand for it.
6. The thing Ken can't seem to grasp, if people are spending £3k+ on a bass, it's not a big thing to expect the company to ship them a $10 pot and not extort $100 for their back pocket claiming it was for shipping. That is disgraceful customer service. Oh and, Ross Curtis here, 19, business student. And to be honest I wouldn't buy a Ken Smith bass because I don't like the majority of botique basses and can't afford it on a student budget. If I did decide in the future when I'm earning good money I do want one I'd think twice about buying a Ken Smith now.
7. I always return to business' that go the extra mile. Like stringbusters, a string broke after less than a day, no quibble, didn't expect the string back as proof, just sent another next day in the post. Absolutely outstanding service, which is why i will use them again. I highly doubt I'd use a ken smith product after seeing some of the dreadful responses and customer service displayed in this thread.
8. Boost low mids instead of lows. Have an experiment with the low cut function and then boosting lows on the EQ as well, I don't know why but that seems to work sometimes.
9. Mark it out, use a sharp chisel and go slow is my advice. Unless you're dead set on using a router.
10. We're not all made of money, changing to a fretless is not always an option. Fretted basses are easier to find, as are necks (for builds). Second hand as well.
11. Say you'll arrange shipping for significantly less if he gives you a pickup time and location.
12. Bought a sack truck from machinemart for about £35. Since then I've had a mate fit some larger wheels (and change their location) to make moving through mud easier plus sprayed it camoflauge for festival beer carrying reasons. It can carry several hundred cans of carling, or 2 heavy cabs at a time (or any combination of the two) no problems
13.
How loud do you need to get when practicing at home? For me, as long as I can hear it, that's loud enough.
At uni - Housemates in - reasonable / housemates out - loud At home - Quiet as possible due to elderly neighbours
14. Thanks for the info/ offer man but I've decided to stay fretted for now
15. Put my amp on top of the house bass amp once "Don't want that redundant old sh*t" worked quite well.
16. Bass pod pro > Housemates fancy denon 2.1 system For a while, it wasn't too bad to be fair, when you started to crank it, then it hated you. Getting my amp down there this year though, thank god.
17. I watch bass players intently when I see a new one because some have a tendancy to overplay and some to completely underplay. But I don't get bitchy like drummers seem to, I just think "I'd have played that differently"
18. Right, bit of an update. Unfortunately I'm still waiting on screws and pickups are a long way off seeing as I've run out of money and work are messing me about. It's important the government doesn't hear my tunes though so I did get round to lining the cavities today:
19. Seconding the learn how to do it yourself, it's really quite simple. Plus you'll be able to sort mates instruments out resulting in free beer/ cigs.
20. Sorry but a soundcard on a cable for £34? Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
21.
the bass playing equivalent of wearing my girlfriends pants.
I love wearing your girlfriends pants. And for the record, don't put on a girls leggings while she's out of the room and pose, she'll get really angry while you laugh like a schoolgirl. Love ric's, nowhere near my budget and I'd have to get the real mccoy, one day though.
22.
Bit of a lad, at least he's honest and hard working - two fantastic qualities.
Two fantastic qualities which have lost all meaning because everyone puts that kind of stuff down.
23.
Nah, it's actually a clever marketing ploy so that all the slappers and fretw***ers have more room to show off in. Apparently, when someone chooses to "demonstrate their skills", a gang of screeching girls appears from nowhere and flocks around the potential customer. This helps to support the customer's delusion that their "skills" attract ladies, in turn increasing the chance of a sale by nearly 150%. True story.
I'm sure bass cellar is full of screaming girls who need a change of underwear after hearing some slap... It's more than likely the few who walk past the hot drummer shop and go in the bass cellar will be thinking "Whats the awful racket, oh it's that pale nerdly looking kid with the big guitar, I'm gonna go have a sweaty backdoor lovemaking session with this rich salesman"
24. I'm in the process of doing it (check my sig for the build thread). And while i'm on that, check out the build diarys section. I'm seriously glad I didn't get a kit, for the amount of bass I've gotten for what I've spent it's quite remarkable, hunting down parts seperately, making them all fit. It's all part of the fun. Have a hunt about for a body and neck then go from there
25. I had one it was okish low down with a bit of EQ twiddling, but past the 12th fret it was awful, the neckdive was killer especially for such a thick neck, and it gave everyone the impression I played a lot of metal (seeing as I had long hair at the time). I kind of miss it in a way because it was my first semi decent bass and the deal I sold it in ended up me being out of pocket by about £50 (never give finance to friends). But I wouldn't buy another.
