1. No idea if this is the correct forum, cant make my mind up which one to post in sorry. Anywho. The famous track Love will tear us apart. by Joy Division. I looked it up on one of the many bass tab sites and find that people not even 100% sure that its a bass doing the main groove. Certainly sounds like Hooky to me. However apparently he appears to be playing chords on the bass in many instances ie: hitting E & A together i think, on the intro. Can anyone out there confirm this? I tried it and it sounds like my efforts on an old acoustic i used to own ie: awful. Can anyone tell me whats going on in this track. Even better would be if anyone has it in bass clef instead of tab.
2.
Have you plugged it in yet? How does it play?
It badly needs new strings at the moment. Hopefully it'll have some by the weekend. But the action and feel are great, no buzzing or anything. All i need then is to (try and find?) buy a decent set of flats or half rounds that dont cost m ore than the guitar did!
3.
I've got two Milestone IIIs, and they have a longer top horn (which makes them well balanced, given the light weight of the body).
Yeah the Milestone III looks like the horn is two frets longer than on mine. . Sorry Eight not meaning to hijack your thread or anything.
4. I have just got a Peavey milestone 1 off ebay for the cool price of £31. (see end of this thread: click to go to thread) The strings are dead as a doornail. Any advice on what new ones to go for. I have just realized i have never bought a new set of strings for a bass before. Only picked the bass up again before xmas, so first time for buying new strings. I play with a pick mainly so i think id like to go for some flatwounds, or maybe half rounds? See i cant even decide that. Not even sure what size to go for ?! The sort of stuff i like to play is Stranglers, Joy division, The Jam, Black sabbath. Sorry to be so vague, can any one point me in the right direction ? ps: i have just read somewhere to make sure the new strings are the same gauge or i will have to alter something or other. Short of taking the bass into my local muso shop and plonking it on the counter, how do i find out what gauge the originals are? Oh wo, it getting stressfull
5. I have been given 2 pair of old PA speakers. One is H&H the other is nameless but has Fanes in them, I have no idea how many wats they are or know anything about them. Does anyone recognise or know anyuthing about them. Apart from the fact that theyre ready for the dump ? Is it worth taking the speakers out of them. Here are the 2 types. The H&H have the unmarked speakers in them, the bottom one is the Fane.
6. Well i have just picked the Peavey up and it really does appear to be a milestone 1. The guy himself said he had researched it a little and found it a strange configuration. But he seemed to me to be the honest type with little or nothing to gain on a cheapo bass ebay sale. All we could think was maybe it had been altered in the past.I will look for evidence, but can see non at the moment. I have just read that Peavey only have serial numbers for US made models. Sort of begs the question, Why on earth give serial numbers to any made outside of the US in the first place ?! Does anyone have any inkling if this is correct? pics below.
7. I have just won one of these on ebay for £31, so im interested to see how it goes.
8.
There was a clue in there. I guess I was being too clever : PMRC In 1985, Dr. Joe Stuessy testified to the United States Congress at the Parents Music Resource Center hearings that: The message [of a piece of heavy metal music] may also be covert or subliminal. Sometimes subaudible tracks are mixed in underneath other, louder tracks. These are heard by the subconscious but not the conscious mind. Sometimes the messages are audible but are backward, called backmasking. There is disagreement among experts regarding the effectiveness of subliminals. We need more research on that.[86]
The first thing i did after reading the top post was to google the guy, and i thought. Hmm thats a coincidence with a guy having the same name as the dude who testified to congress about subliminal satanic messages in heavy metal. Even before i read on and found out it was a hoax. Though i have to admit i still didnt twig on.
9. Where is the best place on the interweb where i can print off some large scale finger posistions for chords. (so i can pin them on the wall and view them while practicing) Theres tons out there for the geetards, not to many for us cool cats (that keep mixing major and minor) though.
10. Was supposed to be getting mine this weekend. But a nasty surprize in the nature of car tax, and phone bill needs attending to. Not sure which to prioritize first Damn i need car, house phone and CV jazz of course, so another fortnights waiting Grrr
11. Anyone in my neck o' the woods know of any good bass teachers around the Chester area, say a radious of 10 miles or so ?
12. are there 2 copies now in circulation ? if so then lets make sure that both copies are not posted to the same next in line person.
13. Greetings Lefty.
14. put me on the list please. ta. Daz
15. me next please. cheers. Daz
16.
Hi El Bajo, I bought the book you mention Building Walking Basslines by Ed Friedland some 18 months ago; took one look inside and filed it under 'one day Thomas'; that day arrived last Monday and I'm enjoying the experience. If, like myself, other 'ear playing' Basschaters out there have decided that reading is the way forward for them I'd recommend they have a look at this book. I'm also keenly awaiting the reading course / instructions that our very own Major Minor has in the pipeline, he's taken a lot of interest in the views of readers and non-readers on this site, I'm sure the insight gained will reflect in his publication. Oggy
Just to make sure. Does Building Walking Basslines by Ed Friedland have music in bass clef and not treble clef ? (I understand there are no bass tabs which im fine with)
17. had bad experience with DHL and UPS. Both lied and said they had been to my address twice and got no answer. Though they didnt, as they left no card and the address was to my retired parents who never go out, and who have a dog who barks the house down the moment he hears the gate squeek. They then sent it back down south instead of leaving it at a local depot where i could at least go and get it myself. Still never got my item and am down £40 as well. Not much but thats not the point. The van drivers simply lie and say they have tried to deliver when they came nowhere near the house and simply couldnt be arsed delivering it and went home early. Here is a thread on the subject at my favourite welding web forum. One of the members actually states "DHL deliveries have turned up in private cars (once granny & grandad taking grandchild out for a ride), and a taxi in the past."!! 18. this is the sort of thing imean: I have no connection whatsover with any of these companies or websites. in fact i have a sneaking suspicion that all the stuff they sell you can be learned for free, somehow or someway ? relative pitch perfect pitch absolute & relative pitch Anyone out there tried them or similar?
19. I have seen several train your ears/play by ear type adverts lately. Some are for cd or dvds and others are computer programmes. Most cost over £100. What is the basis for these type of things. Has anyone out there tried them? Is it worth scouring usenet for them and trying, or am i wasting my time?
20. Watch it. a lead foot start could put that Hartke head amp through the back window of that Celica! I wish id taken a pic of my Volvo 940 (with boot not hatchback!) with this little lot crammed in it. I won the lot off ebay for £16, consisting of 12 small combo amps and 4 large PA cabs. Worked out at £1 per item!! Pictured below
21.
Although the Biffy Clyro model comes in a really nice Lake Placid Blue. It's a bit dearer to the standard white model though.

The CV jazz is only available in that colour, yes. There are also two CV precisions available - a 50s style one in LPB and a 60s style one in sonic blue. You can also get the CV jazz from soundslive for £248 - here. S.P.
Ah im not that fussed on colours that id buy a different model because of it. Olympic white it is then. I see Chester's only other music shop has a model in for £269, though i have never bought more than plectrums there. A place called Back Alley music. anyone shopped there ? Back Alley music Who or what on earth is Biffy Clyro anywho? When i first saw the James johnson model, i mixed him up for a moment with James Jameson, DOH!!
22.
I've had stuff price matched in the Reading store but they have tightened up since the credit crunch & they wouldn't do it last time
Really? Thats strange i'd have thought they'd be more desperate for your business at the moment? Although its not like i'm in London or somesuch with a hundred music stores in a 10 mile radius all competing. Mind you, they are hard to work out. In the three times i have been in the Chester store i have twice heard them knock £20 and £30 of a new guitar for a minute rub mark, (not a scratch) one on the guitar, the other time on the case, and both times it was the guy behind the counter who offered the discount without the buyers even mentioning anything?! Anywho i will ask them and if they say no i'll just breeze back out again, see what they say. Mind you i would have done that anyway being as i am not buying for a few weeks
23. I am in town tomorrow so i will ask them. just wondered if anyone here had actually done a price match with Dawsons. ? also does anyone know what strings they come with as stock ?
24. Anyone know if Dawsons music does price matching? Got ta have one of those Squier Jazz CV bases, and obviously the cheaper the better. The price there is £286, but Guitar Amp Keyboard have them for £248. Got to get a brand new one for that price. Do they have one in a colour other than Olympic white though? Thats all i see anywhere. I am thinking of the Chester branch, though they also have stores in; Altrincham, Bangor, Basingstoke, Liverpool, Manchester, Reading, Stockport & Warrington
25.
I guess now is as good a time as any to ask a question which will make me seem incredibly stupid What's with the thumb rest type thing below the G string?
I would have asked myself but didnt want to seem naive. Kudos to you for asking. I was thinking all sorts of strange ways to 'rest" the thumb on it. Makes sense now. But does anyone use it as per instructions ?
