1. Hi McGiver69 does this have the 19mm string spacing between the poles? if so I would like to buy it.
2. Is your bass active or passive (active basses have a battery and usually have bass and treble controls - passive basses have no battery and with just volume and a tone control)? if it is passive then plugging straight into an audio interface will not yield good results. If its active then ignore my question. You could use a channel on your mixing desk as a preamp then connect your desk to your Tascam interface via a direct out socket (if your desk has these) or from the master our bus output sockets. with regards to recording you could use some DAW software such as Cubase, Logic, or reaper. you can then import your backing track(s) into the DAW and then record your bass on a seperate track and you will have the ability to mix them to your hearts desire. If your bass is passive then you are going to need a Direct Inject (D.I) Box to connect the bass either to your Tascam interface or your mixing desk. To prevent me from going into a really long description about D.I. boxes please visit www.recordingbass.co.uk - its all explained there (shameless plug LOL)
3.
I think you should be worrying the placement of the individual bridge peices more then the pickups! Look at the difference in placement between them!
it aint as bad as it looks and the middle one wasnt fixed yet when i took the photo lol...it was clamped into place for reference
4. Thanks Darkstrike... but the Nordy's are a bit out of my price range right now...especially as I need two pickups Do you know if the Wilkinson MWM5C will do the job?
5. Be careful sending stuff back to thomann. I had a similar issue with a Rockbass Fortress - badd frets high action. big gap either side of the neck pocket....the list goes on. To cut a long story short they charged 30 euros to collect it (even though it only cost 10 euros for them to send it?) and then there was a £16 diference in what I paid and the amount they refunded me.
6. Hi, I have a 5 string bass from Red Planet Guitars which has quite a wide neck. The original bridge had 15.5mm string spacing. I recently got 5 individual bridges so I could utilise this wide neck properly and spaced them at 19mm. My problem now is that the low B and High G strings are too far outside the pickup poles and now have a lower output than the rest of the strings. Is there a suitable replacement? Here you can see how bad it is. Although this is a cheapy ebay bass, it is actually very comfortable in my massive hands and I now realy like the 19mm string spacing.
7. Thanks for the reply Rennie, I did see those in maplins but that type is for mounting on top. I am looking for a flush mounting box. The type found in most active guitars / basses. Like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9v-Battery-Case-Box-active-guitar-bass-pickup-B8-q-/180720594582?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2a13c96e96
8. Hi I am looking for a battery box - I want to put an active circuit in a passive bass and route out the hole to fit a battery box. I looked on ebay but I can only seem to find them in Hong Kong
9. Just a quick update I have added a new section called "Advanced Recording" to the site, and a new page in that section "attempting" to explain phase issues. please let me know if it makes sense. Thanks
10. To be honest I dont spend too much time playing with the mouse I have an ADAT machine connected to a MOTU 828MK2 giving me 16 outputs which I run back into the Soundtracs, most of my mixing and eq'ing is done there. In the DAW (usually Logic Pro) i may add the odd insert effect and compressors to individual tracks/instruments. I like a mixture of both worlds. But I am a die-hard knob twiddler I agree that parametric equalizers need to be explained especially the "Q" control but again needs to explained in a simple manner that newbies can understand the difficult bit is wording it lol. Can anyone recommend a good modelling device with usb or firewire connection for direct recording? The Korg Pandora has been mentioned to me before.
11. Thanks for your comments WHUFC Bass - some really useful point there - Its good to hear about the types of equipment other people are using for recording especially microphones. Most of the feedback I am getting all falls into the same areas that you mention. I was hoping to add more to the site this past weekend but I got two college assignments thrown at me during last week - I agree that mixing desks aren't a necessity anymore but some people including myself prefer to fiddle with real controls rather than the mouse and it also depends on your recording process - some folks record the bass last so they will equalize it to fit into the mix just before recording to save a lot of time spent on post processing (i do this sometimes). I use an old 1980's Soundtracs desk as after the DI because I have a lot more control of the sound and the level with the use of a nice warm sounding eq and the fader before sending to the audio interface for recording. It would be very difficult to cater for every musical style on the site, for instance a reggae player like myself who swears by the thick dull sound of flatwounds will not be changing his strings every time he records - metal players will probably place all sorts of effects in the signal chain and will probably have their bass tuned down. I will add some info on room acoustics (thanks for reminding me ) and some info on speakers and headphones. Also a good point about the MAC I chose Reaper because its free as most newbies dont usually have the funds to splash out on a MAC and Logic Pro 9. Your comments are most appreciated.
12. Thanks 51m0n i will try to find some of your posts when I get back from college later
13. Wow thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback @ Charic - very good points i will definitely add them and you are right about the pbass..especially as I recorded the samples with a P-Bass lol @ 51mon - I think i will have to do some reading on phase alignment and regarding compression, I agree with you that its a bit thin. I was aiming this site at beginners but I think think I will add an "advanced compression" page - cheers mate. (any more info could you PM me - sorry a bit cheeky ) I will add your info on recording levels.
14. I am creating a site to help those who are new to recording their bass guitar in to a computer via DAW software. Please take a look - any constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated. I am no expert but I hope that my limited knowledge will be of help to others Or if you have any hints and tips and would like me to add them to the site please feel free to share them here. you can access the site at http://www.recordingbass.co.uk I look forward to hearing your comments ADMIN/MODS: if this inappropriate please remove this post,
15. Shameless plug...but take a look here www.recordingbass.co.uk The site isnt finished yet
16. i repaired a HA3500 recently a large track on the circuit board had vapourized due to a power capacitor going short circuit as a result of a faulty bridge rectifier - this part of the circuitry fed juice to the power amplifier board. When I repaired it I added fuses on the main power supplies to the amplifier section so that if there is a fault, the fuses should blow and not risk the circuit board catching fire. Please Hartke put some fuses inside the thing Apart from that I wouldnt say they are difficult to work on and they come to bits quite easliy.
17. If it has never been opened/serviced I would also budget for a change of power supply reservoir capacitors and the cathode bypass electrolytic capacitors. i recently overhauled a Simms Watts PA200 - i got my capacitors from here http://www.audiocap.co.uk/ft-capacitors-2-c.asp
18. My second purchase from PsychoAndy went just as smoothly as the first....top seller
19. Great seller very informative and always available to answer questions. Cheers Andy
20. Arrived safe and sound...smooth deal. Many thanks mate.
21. Having 2x 0.047uF capacitors in parallel installed will almost give you the same capacitance as 0.1uf so you should get more or less the same result as I did. What value pots are you using?
22. Just put one of THESE in a Squier P-Bass Special with 250k Bourns pots. I was finding it a bit to bright and mid-rangey with the Entwistle pickups that I put in there. 0.1uf cap and changing the pots from 500k to 250k gives that heavy deep reggae/dub sound wih Fender flats.
23. Cant stop playing this one....makes your hands hurt Yabby you
24. Glad to be of help - I guess that with the wants and needs of the majority of bass players in this age the pickup manufacturers are building pickups to have more clarity and detail for those that play a lot of chords and bass soloes, also the slap players that need lots of highs. So with that, us die hard deep roots reggae players are a bit left out (kinda like being a left handed bass player). So the answer is probably to look for some ancient used pickups from another era or look for pickups with a vintage sound. Not sure if these are any good. The write up looks impressive LOL http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/fatjazz.htm Oh BTW I tried Fender noiseless pickups and the EMG JHZ passive pickup set (avoid if you want any bottom end at all)
