i can scan and post on here if you want?
Actually, i could just type the stuff down on here... Fretless Tips -Practice in pitch-black/blindfold whatever takes your fancy, as long as you can't see the fretboard -Practice Scales, use open strings to get an idea of an in-tune scale, then move on to full neck scales once the ear has developed. (.....i was rubbish with scales on fretless ) -Practice intervals - 8ves, 7ths, 6ths, 5ths, 4ths, 3rds, -Play it like a fretted bass. i.e - don't go sliding up and down to the notes because it's possible to do so. -Mess about/experiment with sound envelope by plucking with different intensity and in different positions. -It might say to play the fretless like a fretted, but mess about by taking full advantage of the lack of frets! Reccomended Listening Japan (Mick Carn on bass) - Oil on Canvas Paul Young - no parle Joni Mitchell (w/ Jaco pastorius): Hejira Mingus Shadows and Light - 'Dry cleaner from Des Moines' <- Stand out track Just a reminder, it's all stuff recommended by my bass teacher so i'm not to blame if any of it sounds a bit silly Hope this helps!! James

i have the perfect sheet that might help you.. it's one that my bass teacher gave me when he gave me a lesson on fretless. It basically just gives tips on how to practice with it, and some recommended listening. i can scan and post on here if you want? James

I've gone a completely different route now guys! Decided to go for a Hartke hm5410 combo... thanks to a handy loan of £300 to pay off the rest of the oncoming amp debts from the parents. I managed to raise the other £600 myself and i'm expected to pay off the £300 too so i'm more fortunate than spoilt if anything! Reviews and pics whenever i decide to place my order with bass merchant, which should hopefully be in the next week!! James
Streamer all day long... Corvettes just look silly
I beg your pardon?! I think my corvette looks beautiful! Even with the massive provocatively shaped horn! But tonewise, when I played a Streamer $$ I was left speechless. And I just love that spector shape. Get one! James
Victor Wooten's fingerstyle often has quite a growl, his foderas have a Jazz style bridge pup, which is probably the reason A jazz bass growl is a beautiful thing....for me.. Settings wise I usually have the neck pickup rolled off. On my 3 band eq practice amp, i've got bass on 6/10, mid on 6/10 and treble on 7 or 8/10, i also use a compressor aswell. strange settings i'm sure, but that's my interpretation of a growl However, it's a shame the wiring on my bass has basically said to me "yeah you can have that bridge pickup growl, you can also have some free feedback too!" ...damn my jazz bass
BY THE WAY, My bass is a MIM jazz as well, changed the pickups to seymour duncans, but i can remember those stock pickups giving off a good growl, you just need to find it is all haha.

Was called in to play in my local high schools production of hairspray. 4 shows and a £25 voucher to prove my hard work! age restricted me from an expected £100 The shows were amazing though!!! bass part was reasonably hard but SO fun to play, didn't get tedious at all.
I didn't like the Hydrive 4x10. Sealed cab and lacking bottom. Dunno if there is a ported one too.
so should i maybe invest in the 'older' 410XL? or should i go with the Hydrive 115 cab? i'd rather go with the XL so i save a bit of money! thanks for the heads up, James
So you've officially given up on the Bass Centre? Tough break man I know the LH500 gets cracking reviews and is undeniably great value for money. My only gripe with it is it doesn't appear to have a speakon connector, but that's definitely more a minor niggle than anything else. Cant say much about the HyDrive Cab. But if it sounds like the XL series and is any lighter then your onto a winner.
Yeah man, gave up after i found out they had no dealing connections to hartke at all. i've been recommended the bass merchant by gareth from hartke uk though, so all's good! i've seen reviews for the lh500 too, sounds good based on reviews. Didn't realise there wasn't a speakon though, I could always get an adapter if it's desperately needed.. but it can't have been such an issue if i overlooked it that badly i'm fairly certain it was an XL cab i played through at the gig last night, really made my jazz bass growl! Hoping the hydrive 4x10 would do the same! thanks, James

hey guys, my plans for getting a combo have kind of fallen through, even moreso after i played through a killer hartke 4x10 cab with the hartke ha3500 head at a gig last night. so, i might get the hydrive 4x10 and the lh500. anyone own any of these that could give me feedback? so many amp posts... any feedback would be much appreciated!! thanks, James

-
sorry to hear that mate, if you're up for playing banjo you could join a flecktones style band i'm starting with my friend haha jam over chameleon for a bit, always puts me in a better mood!

What are you transcribing at the moment?
jamesbass116 replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
hey, i'm attempting some flecktones bass parts..... it's definitely testing me.. maybe i should've started a bit smaller haha James -
you could always get a fender standard jazz for around £450 then mod it, i put seymour duncans and a badass bridge, i do jazz and funk stuff aswell and i think that setup is great! (but thats my personal taste ha) James

If money were no object, what bass would you have?
I can't recommend these highly enough if you want narrower string spacing on a 5'er: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=spector This looks a particularly nice model and a very good price Promise I'm not on commission, lol.
my goodness.. thats an amazing looking bass! i think i'll have to give it a miss as i've never played a spector 5 before haha thanks for the link though!
Alternative is to buy a 4 and convert to a 5. Obviously this will mean adding new screw holes for the new bridge, possibly swapping the pup for a blade type (I wouldn't imagine you'd need to route and fit wider pup, but the pole pieces of what was there might not be in the correct place) and also drilling a hole in the headstock for the extra tuner. On second thoughts, easier to buy a factory 5.
haha yeahh... a tad easier. although that 4 to 5 conversion would be a fun project one day
-
thanks guys!! lots of different basses recommended, means next time i have a free day i'll be going on a massive 5 string demo session! i'll be keeping a close eye on any good G&L's though, as the bass my teacher let me try was... fantastic
-
hey, i am considering trading in my current 5er (fender 24V jazz) as the neck is wayy to wide for my liking, 1.8/1.9mm i think my school's bass teacher let me try his bass, a G&L US L-2500, he said it had 1.6 spacing and i could feel it cos i was flying all over that neck haha. But i do think that bass is a bit out of my price range. Does anyone know of any other 5 strings, ABSOLUTE max price limit £1000, with a similar narrow neck? around 1.6mm? thanks, James

what tune/band that got you into bass ?
Welcome to the wonderful world of the gigging musician. This won't be the worst thing that happens to you - not by a long way. You just need to learn to deal with it. For example, at the time of writing I have a £1000+ handmade bass lying around in some airport hanger somewhere; now look at my avatar and ask yourself 'does this look like a worried man?'
haha fair point. and thanks for putting what you said in a pleasant way, rather than putting a guilt trip on me, i TRULY appreciate it -
this is in the january issue? i might need to check this out...
+1. I've invested in gear through the bass centre and found them to be really helpful. In my case, it was a Little Mark II and a Warwick 411 PRO so not a casual purchase either. Regarding the OP, I think delays with postage are one of the negatives with buying online and similar (like over the phone) - you benefit from being able to shop around, but you can't have your gear straight away and there is the potential for delays. You're bound to come across much bigger problems sooner or later in life, which I think is why some people reacted negatively to the thread.
yeah, thanks man. and yeah, i even know that i'll have bigger issues to come, looking back i can see how i sounded a bit selfish about this one small incident though
