We don't have bad gigs very often but when we do both guitarists get really stressed about it. I always say to them you need a bad gig every now and again to make you appreciate the good ones and keeps you on your toes. Don't get stressed about it, I'm sure the next one will be a corker !!

Hohner Jack Bass Custom V vs. Fender JB Deluxe Series MIM

I got a dark brown Hohner Jack for my 18th birthday and played it for about 5 years. They never go out of tune and also if you've got a small car (I had a metro at the time) they will still fit across the boot in a standard guitar case... I sold mine about 7-8 years ago and have always regretted it. I still keep an eye out for (a maple) one at a good price... -
Hi, I bought the programmable bass driver (i.e the single input version of the deluxe) for exactly the same reasons as you say. I been trying out distortion/overdrive pedals over the last few years but didn't get on with any of them. This does exactly what I want i.e adding a bit of edge/drive to the sound without any fuzz or loss of clarity/tone etc. I have 3 settings stored with increasing levels of drive up to mild overdrive - it's works great for me and I would recommend to anyone not wanting full on overdrive/distortion. I had one of these a few years back. I loved the look and the the sound from it but sold it when I moved on to playing more modern material. I quickly I wished I'd never sold it.... Good luck with the sale ! -
Does anyone else play a lot of open strings?

I always avoid open strings unless I need to drink/scratch/adjust my amp etc. I've always felt I have less control over an open note than using a fretted alternative probably as I use a lot of damping/muting ? -
I've been trying put more effort in to my 'performance' recently and to try interact more with the audience much more. I got some (very rare) female attention on Saturday at a 21st birthday party. She was a very nice twenty-something and I'm 36, going grey and rather married but at least it looks like my efforts are working

We played at a wedding in a converted barn and were warned no smoke but the singer decided he knew best as it was haze not smoke.... half way through the second set the power goes off, fire alarm sounds and we all get evacuated. A few minutes later the fire brigade turn up and we get a bollocking from the venue owner. Luckily for us the couple saw the funny side of it ! Besides the slight interuption to the second set it was a very enjoyable gig, the crowd were up for it and the happy couple were just that... very happy !

As a general rule for pub gigs I always say If punters can't get across to the bar staff what they want to drink you are too loud. If they can't serve the punters they won't have you back. For parties and weddings you need to be even quieter, if the guests can't hold a conversation at a resonable distance away you're too loud and won't get any re-bookings. probably a bit too sensible for your average guitarist though so might not be a lot of help ?

If I've managed to attach the images correctly here is my rig for a modern rock covers band, mostly functions/parties/weddings playing pretty much every week. Aguilar 2x12 Rack case with MarkBass Little Mark II, transmitter for Shure Wireless Monitors and a Wireless reciever (not used very often) Boss pedal case with Boss Overdrive, Phaser and Tuner MarkBass Traveller 15 (not shown) for smaller gigs/practices etc, likley to go soon... Basses : Mex Fender Jazz with Quarter Pounders. This my main gigging bass and is wired vol/blend rather than vol/vol. A bridge upgrade is likley soon... Mex Fender P Special (Active) Mostly backup bass or used for our occasional pub gigs when we play heavier material. Will probably remove the active electronics when I get round to it or swap for another passive Jazz. Warwick Corvette (Active) used this for about 3 years playing heaver material and it's taken quite a beating, hasn't been gigged for about 2 years now. I find it easy to shift about whilst giving me plenty of volume and different tones for my needs without breaking the bank. I've not got any real GAS at the moment but I'm sure that will change... Very impressed with the stock on the bass merchants and also how friendly & relaxed it is. There was plenty to choose from but in the end I took it easy on my wallet and went for a secondhand Aguilar 2x12 which gets me extra bonus points at home for spending a lot less than I has intended ! I'm looking forward to giving the new cab a good blast on Saturday night and also returning to the Bass Merchant very soon....

Hi, I've been looking at purchasing a pair of cabs (probably 1x12's) and have come across Zoot who have a stockist who are are 5 mins up the road from me. I've read through a few old Basschat treads where a few others were considering these cabs but I don't think many people actually own them ? Are there any Zoot owners out there who can share their opinions or anyone esle who knows any more about these cabs ? Thanks Darren

My band plays mainly parties and weddings and we always seem to start the year slowly... My theory is that most of our gigs such as weddings etc tend to be in the warmer months then when the weather cools down and those gigs drop off... then we start on the xmas parties. That leaves Jan and Feb which are always dead. We always say we'll book some pub gigs for Jan/Feb but never get round to it... I'm sure things will pick up for you...

[/quote] I supported Nine Below Zero with my first band about 15-16 years ago. It was my first non-pub gig and I was very nervous playing on a proper stage in front of that many people ! Luckily no one paid much attention to us besides our singers mum (who'd been on the sherry) but it was a great night and I remember we enjoyed scoffing their buffet while they were on stage
