Thinking of getting an Orange Bass Terror
Chest Rockwell replied to cameltoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
i like mine and so do the guys in the two stoner type bands I play in. I can crank it when the guitar players get out of hand and can still be heard easily. i play it through a barefaced compact. the only bad thing is trying not to be smug as everyone struggles with their heavy gear, or gear that doesnt just... work. soundwise it doesnt have the fuzz i associate with 'gain' (thankfully), but a big muff can give me all the fuzz i might need. I generally go 'clean' in the two guitar band and a little fuzzier in the one guitar band. i go on bass full, mids middle and treble a touch off full. suits me. recorded an impromptu demo at our rehearsal place and had to mic the cab up as apparently the output was too loud for the guy's desk! (dont quite understand how that can be, but there y'go) -
just reminding me why I love old skool Iron Maiden so much (up to 7th Son anyways). I only know like, one of those basslines! what am I thinking?!?!!

FS\FT: Barefaced Compact - Now with pics.
Chest Rockwell replied to Rowbee's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
hi, might I ask what the 2 compact's are like? I have one, and it's damn loud. I've pondered in moments of bass monsterism, getting another. or a midget. dunno if there's any need though, aside from looking better and sounding like they'd knock a house down? any description of the sound/power will help! good luck with the sale/swap (bump)! -
um, having not heard of Mr Pratt before seeing this thread, I've bought the book and read half of it in a week (i'm busy), tis a great read, so thanks everyone, and Mr. P! oh and my claim to fame is that my real name is Robert Palmer. Really.

wow. im shocked at reading this news. I've only vaguely lurked here for about a year and Simon picked up on my Fender interest. I'd bought a Geddy Jazz but was after a Precision... I live in Cardiff, a short walk from Simon as it turned out, so he invited me round to try his collection of Jap Fenders, so one sunny day I took my Orange Terror and Barefaced over so he could try them. Twas intended as a brief visit but I think we ended up talking (or me listening!) for over 2 hours as I gleaned as much as I could from Si. He gave me some technique tips, some bass lines I should learn, told me TONS of stuff about Fenders and the re-issues, tones, bass in general, playing in bands, even got out his box of tricks... literally bells and whistles that he used in his various gigs. I was enthralled and Very impressed! Simon was a true gent and took time out to talk about all kinds of things, not to mention letting me play the dots on his basses for those two hours! I still have long emails from after the visit about Precisions and I was waiting for him to get some more in as I felt I wanted to get one from him, he said he was taking a break for a while. and now this. Well, Im quite gutted. R.I.P Si

i just put it next to the cab. it's not like putting it on top makes me look any more manly anyway so why damage it? JUst got to try and remember not to accidentally boot it.

Grubs, I was in the same boat last year, (hadnt played regularly for years, had a cheaper Aria Pro ) I looked around as best I could, borrowed a Fender Jazz that had that 'bass' character I thought I was missing and then played a Geddy Lee Jazz in a guitar shop and was sold. They're under £800 new and I picked one up on Ebay for just over £400. An 'expert' may find holes in it and the neck is a little sharp if you play slung low, meaning the neck can dig into the fingers/palm of the hand, but this is probably me as I stabbed myself in the hand accidentally(!!) a while back and i get that sensation. having the guitar higher slung would help. but the neck is Fast. everyone thats played it likes it. and they look great. anyway, there's quite a few on sale here at the moment. Try one out in a shop, then come here and pick one up. With that and my Orange Terror bass head, the two bands I play in are always happy with my sound.

thats a bit better, Burning Witch is what you need though or Thorrs Hammer if anyone's new to this game, seek out the Roadburn festival and myspace the bands listed. I've been the last 4 or 5 years in a row. tis the motherlode for this kind of music.

well, before you go about rebuilding your bass or buying new one... try a few pedals. I'd guess your Fender gives you enough warm bass to be getting on with. Try the Big Muff Bass pedal, it'll give you a little distortion or crunch, as much or little as you require. Just a touch is enough for a little flavour. I use thicker strings (Bass Boomers Nickel Plated 50-115 Heavy) on a Geddy Lee and we tune down to C# (and drop B ). Pick ups i haven't fiddled with. I guess amplification is a factor, and you get what you pay for but I'd try pedals first. depends what you want, massive beef, or a little bit of crunch. I have an Orange Terror Bass head and a Barefaced Compact cab, for portability, they're plenty loud for me and my slow n heavy brand of HM

I respect Boris, but it's more art-rock than strictly Doom. not that anything has to be strictly anything, but the 'Doom' on here is largely Indie rock, just with guitar touching eleven a coupla times. what's with all the shoegazing?
-
aye. general consensus is that it aint the sum of the parts.

being a Metalhead, I'll go with Cliff Burton. Most of that other stuff is very 'clever' but either boring as hell (Wilkenfield), or... 'noise' (Sheehan). I am sulking of course, cos I cant play anything like any of then At least Cliff brings the ROCK.
-
sounds like you both need some Yob. I love this band, they bring the heavy, wall of sound, but if you can get past what might seem like noise, they're utterly blissful. This, to me, is what one might call 'The sh*t'...
