1. Trade/Part Ex bump attempt. There's a few things I am after, for experience, that I could be persuaded to throw some cash on top of this for... - fretless - 8 string - 5 string in that order. nothing too shoddy/cheap sounding/awful looking/gaudy colours/weird sticky out bits Also, I doubt anyone wants to part ex a good looking Sunburst American Fender Precision?? Ye never know...
2. thanks!!!! I just learnt Black Dog. Only 23 years after first listening to it regularly
3. The Combo 300 is the best thing on the market, seriously. and it just so happens someone is selling one right here... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=95042&hl= on the subject though, I've gigged this many years ago and practiced it plenty. I cant say it gives any kind of amazing tone, but what it does give is volume and beef. edit: actually, scratch that, what I like about it is that it gets gain-y at a higher volume, reminds me of that kinda prong/fugazi kindof industrial crunch type sound. but yeah, it's not a pretty sound but I never want that. Coupled with a pedal, I use a Big Muff, it gives a nice powerful sound. For players that like nice clean character/genre type sounds, maybe something with a bigger spend will supply, but if you ROCK and need volume which you hone into your own sound with a pedal or gadget of your choice, this is just fine. It is heavy though, but then so would a large head and cab be anyway. I've replaced it with an Orange TB and a Compact, purely for ease of transport and storage. If the Combo 300 was smaller, I'd keep it.
4. 61 views, so I guess most people have seen it! thanks for the interest last one went on Ebay for £143. I'll match that. Out of curiosity, is anyone interested in this, but location is an issue? I am purely curious, Im not about to drive it to Scotland (although I've never been to me Celtic cousins land and would love to, so I might just do that!!! )
5. I heart mine (bump).
6. I've chatted about this thang in another thread over here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=88629&hl= Currently it's sitting pretty in my spare bedroom, but I dont use it, so I might as well convert it to cash, if I can. I'm based in Cardiff and realistically you'd likely have to come and get it as it's quite heavy, cant imagine what postage would be. I can drive it somewhere local-ish. It's been looked after, rarely gigged (basically 6 times, over 10 years ago!) I'd possibly throw some money at it if anyone has a fretless going, or a fairly tasteful electric 6 string guitar I can use to mess about on... though I dont want to clutter the house with junk so no cheapo, junky stuff. Going rate seems to be £150 (which is a great price for this beast), so lets start it at £160 and I'll let you knock me down a tenner cos i'm nice There's also one on Ebay now going for £120 with 4 days to go (I am good at losing a sale!) I'll hold out for the cash it as I've had it for 20 years and another few wont hurt. Cheers Neal
7. hmmm. could this go with my Barefaced Compact and TB? all signs point to yes. When you leaving? what price will it be the day before?
8. wow. what a complex web!! I too have an issue with my E string flapping (it's C#). One band I play with tunes to C# F# B E. The other band further drops the C# to B. I hit a lot of open C#s and on some riffs I can catch the string wrong, and if I'm being excitable I might even miss the bloody thing altogether!! I want to rock, not stand there!! grr I have a set of Rotosound Swing Bass Stainless 45-65-80-105's (Standard - Long) from Stringbusters.com, as suggested by a 5 String Ibanez Death Metal playing friend. It seems that a lot of you are saying those gauges should be fine, but Im still having this flapping issue. We do tune low and we do play slow Sabbathy type stuff so there's a lot of open string every now and then. I know Im really going to have to practice and hone my style to stop missing notes and stuff, but there's a thick line between perfection and Rock. I use a Geddy Lee Jazz, I love the neck and I'm not about to solve this by buying a 5 string. I take note of the suggestions on plucking across rather than into the strings! So, I'm wondering about 50 70 85 110 (Heavy - Long) or 65 80 105 130 (Drop Tuning - Long) ? any thoughts on that? would the tension help? I see mention of Newtone Taylor and DR DDT's but if these are expensive and the cheaper Rotosound ones do the trick, that'd save a few quid?
9. what's a shoot out?? if it's a musical standoff, I just play the dots sounds interesting. Im the kind of pentatonic stoner-rock rambler never been one for overt musicianship but never had a problem picking up a melody/riff/beat, while my more expert guitar counterparts often seem to be the ones who forget when to change, keep time or take forever to learn simple riffs!! I dunno! /threadjack
10.
Where are you?
er, Cardiff!
11.
Ooh! Your Peavey 300 BW is shinier than mine. I can tell you that yours is a series one Combo 300 BW (that's the 1x15 Black Widow speaker). Made in the USA and possibly bought from the shop in Essex where Trace Elliot started. My orginal one was (in 84). They are the dog's as far as I'm concerned for that kind of combo. Probably made around 84 or 85. After that they were face lifted, twice I think. I paid £100 for the one I have now. It does look like it spent 10 years in a damp cellar - because it did. However it does have castors and big inset handles in the side to help limit the back damage. £20 for a bit of dry joint soldering and a swift overhaul and it's fine for my rawk and jam gigs. It's a rag rig. Looks like poo, sounds great and, as you say, loud enough to deter marauding guitarists...
aha!! many thanks! what a coincidence that I went lurking in this thread and found your reply from only yesterday! currently it's sitting in my spare bedroom. I think I may be doing a straight swap for a Fretless Cort BF4L or thereabouts, since nobody local is interested. not that I've tried too hard
12. thanks guys!! As it isnt shifting in a hurry, not that I've made much effort, I think I'll just move it upstairs and keep it as a 'practice' amp. Should come in handy when the people in the flat nextdoor decide to bang and crash around. have some BASS..
13. seriously guys, ANY tips on what it could sell for?? be gentle tho eh? Im asking £250.
14. oh great, thanks, now I have to get a tc electronic cab!! what made you mix the TC and the compact? why not two of each? Just curious. Oh dear, when will this bass envy cease??!!!
15. ooof. if I'd seen this a week and a half ago.
16. Basically... I have the above and have replaced it so I'm looking to sell. I'm also interested in it's history and how I managed to pick it up in West Wales for £250 or thereabouts in about 1989. I've gigged it 6 times when I was younger and just carted round the few houses I've lived in. For years I didnt even plug it in, until the last year when at 37 my first midlife crisis kicked in and i decided to be a rock star again. so, anyone know anything about these beasts? It's loud as hell, and grinds at higher volumes. always been good to keep up with screaming noise guitarists. The bass I know all about, I bought it new for £280 in Swansea about the same time. I just never see 'em around and Im curious if anyone rates them cos I always found it fine, pretty fast and easy to play (not that im that good or anything!). maybe a bit clanky and I never did get the hang of the active circuit and the constantly dead battery. any thoughts?
Then I picked up the Peavey Combo 300 for about £250. Massively loud and always handing for pulling widdling guitarists out of their Megadeth nirvana! If anyone can furnish me with info or thoughts on the Aria, I'd be happy, cos I know nothing about the model specifically but always wondered where it sat in the scheme of things (i.e. how much is it worth ) probably not much, but like I said, I always found it better than other things I tried. Not much on it 'cept 'Aria Pro II SLB series electrics' and '0012035' stamp. Also curious bout where the Peavey combo originated (Model 115BW, Serial 3A-01417190). I dont see 'em anywhere, except one that went on Ebay recently for just under £300. This has to be early 80's or something and im guessing came from The States? It's damn loud when needed. i know this isnt high end gear, but having lived with 'em for nearly 20 years, I'm curious! I will likely sell the Peavey now as I dont have the space, but I'll keep the Aria as it's probably a low cost bass and so worth more to me to keep around.
17. Happy to add some positive feedback for Jack. He posted me a great condition Barefaced Compact cab in only a few days and very well packaged! Oh and was quick to reply to about 4 or 500 questions I had before and during the sale too Many thanks matey!! Cheers Neal p.s. have rehearsed it now and it's damn loud!!!
18. I'm 37 and bought the Aria Pro on my 18th birthday for about £280. The typical 'that looks good for a Thrash band' type thing . Everytime I ever played anyone else's bass, I never found it as nice or easy to play as the Aria. Only ever been in one band and that was 13 years ago. Finally last year having made the move to get back into playing, I decided since all these youngsters have loadsa gear and I work, so I deserve summat nice. Found my way to Geddy Lee Jazz's. So I got one 2nd hand off EBay (and a gent that posts here). The neck is Smooth as, though the strings slightly wider than the Aria and the weight heavy. I wont sell it, but I need to get used to it. I can hit it though, and I like slow n heavy, so it suits me and it looks lovely (sorry bout the paw marks!). Picked up a Big Muff so I could get a little gruff out of the Peavey cos those dials dont really do much, it's mainly just volume when I need it. SO... time to up the rig gear... you might have seen my fussing (research) on here, but opting for light weight, size and performance I picked up a new Orange TB and Jack London's Barefaced Compact. Sounds lovely so far, but I need to crank 'em away from home I will likely sell the Peavey now as I dont have the space, but I'll keep the Aria as it's probably a low cost bass and so worth more to me to keep around.
19. got it now. and i aint painting it. sounds lovely with the Orange TB and I cant wait to crank it somewhere, cant do it at home cos things start shaking and the neighbours are probably wondering WTF?? Thanks Jack
20. Thanks guys. in the end I decided to go for Jack London's Barefaced Compact, simply because it's the one with the least questions as to it's performance, it's the lightest, the price for it and the TB still under £850, and the speed with which I can get this new rig into my grubby mitts. I picked up the TB in Gamlins, Cardiff for £450 and should get the Compact by middle or the end of next week. If at a later stage I meet a cab or gear that suits better, then I can always readvertise. If I ever meet an Orange cab, I'll be sure to try em tho Cheers all!
21. I'd love to, but nowhere is sunny Cardiff has the gear a lot of research, nagging and questioning lots of people found me the Geddy Lee bass. Actually, no, it was playing one in a shop that clinched it!! damn.
22. PM'd! sod it, I'll paint the bugger Orange
