yep, i appreciate all the suggestions, but the thought of taking a hammer and chisel to my bass just to fix a simple problem scares the hell out of me! and since i just bought a Fender P for normal tuning practice, im not in the money to splash out on a five, though that'd be a nice luxury to play with. one day. im not completely out of sorts with a floating hand as-it-were, just that a ten quid thumb rest still seems to be a nice little luxury, if i can just practice not wrecking my Geddy before I put it on. I have an old bass i'll use to get the position I think... then get the drill out!!!

looks like there's a groundswell of feeling in favour of using the pickup as a thumb rest? I really dont need or want a 5 string. even though it's low tuning, i feel happy with a 4. what's good enough for Lemmy is good enough for me! im sure in time though i'll discover 5 string joy, but fer now I think i'll for a ten quid thumb rest! (tho i will try and up the pickup to a usable height)

the tuning is B F# B E, basically C# standard but the C# dropped to B. so they're all low. I dont think a B from a 5 string would make much difference. I got a set of Heavy strings that I cant seem to find online but my email confirmation tells me they're 'Bass Boomers Nickel Plated 50-115 Heavy' and the 115 I could barely get through the BadassII bridge! not to mention the fact that if I use a plec and hit the E string hard, it pops off the nut!! finger style doesnt seem to have that issue this is all a learning curve for me. I never thought about any of this stuff before but now I can see where Im going and want to tweak a bass I really like a little more so that it can help me. hmm. didnt really know what a ramp was but think it might not be my style! looks too 'pro musican' for me I could higher the action a little maybe, it's possible i've been overzealous dropping the pickup, maybe the solution is there, which would make it a lot easier! trouble is that we do a few things around the 12th fret and beyond on the E string and I dont really want to fight it... cos i also play pretty low slung and reaching down there isnt easy! style vs substance eh

Hallo, I know most people root their thumb on a pickup to play the bottom string, but Im having something of an issue with this due to a few factors... we tune to B and my strings are thick heavy gauge, so they can flap about a bit... there was too much volume on my B string (that would normally be an E string) so i screwed the pickup down into the bass... this has balanced the string volume, but when playing boisterously, there's not enough exposed pickup to rest on it! So i end up with some weird floating thumb and it's not a confident position to be in. I'm thinking of buying a simply thumb rest, finding a suitable position (probably at the top of a triangle between the pickup and the end of the neck), where I can sit and smash through heavy riffing on the B (E!) without losing power cos my thumb/hand isnt locked in. anyone got any thoughts on this or experienced a similar thing? p.s. this is my Geddy Jazz. it has a great boom for this Sabbathy kinda music! I tried a Fender P Highway One and the bass disappeared(!), so that's now gonna be a standard tuning home practice bass!

I would like to state again, for the record, that my Geddy is awesome if anyone wants to hear what a Geddy Jazz tuned to B-F#-B-E sounds like, do a search for Thorun from Wales on Myspaz. It's fat! and plays Very smoothly! Be even better if I didnt insist on playing it lower slung such that I cant reach the fretboard properly, but looks are important! Geddy bump! -
My fingers are quite close to the strings but I can't seem to get past the barrier... my target at the moment being able to play Stockholm Syndrome by Muse (durr...) without a p
wow! im always impressed by Muse live clips but never really listen to them. that bass playing is insane! my band has a section where i do something like that, but it's just slightly slower and it's not as constant, so i can manage it. i tried playing along to that and my hand went numb! I found in our last practice i didnt have the ability to really hit that section and thought i might have been dropping beats or notes. i got a bit worried, but didnt let on we carried on practice and at the end did our set... and i nailed it easily so yeah, being warmed up and loose has a hell of a lot to do with it too. thanks for the headsup on that tune, im gonna try and aim for it (in a few months)!!

I'm in the same boat!! I love my Geddy Jazz, but I feel the urge for a Fender P in 3 tone sunburst to match it. 90% of the colours I see put me right off. Fiesta Red? Honey Blonde? urg!! it has to be 3T-SB!!! Trouble is that I dont see many of them. I dont really want to pay £700 at something just for GAS, and I dont see many CIJ basses around (now that Old Git has moved on ) I need to go into town and play a few P's. I do remember liking the Highway One but the Geddy impressed me with the smooth neck so I hunted down a better priced one. The whole thing is a tad confusing, so many possibilities, years, prices... Has anyone made a checklist/spreadsheet breakdown of what you get in what model/year/price? The search continues...!
I always tend to change my sold stuffs title and description to sold, as I get pretty annoyed with people messaging me months later about things even when it has SOLD in the title beside what the item was. I figure people will always look at my feedback before buying from me to see I am a good seller, not previous for sale threads.
SOLD is fine, that's very helpful, but removing the sale price isn't. not that you have (have you? )
IMO avforums (and in particular the classifieds section) is over moderated and I would hate to see Basschat end up like that. I think stating the price is a move in the right direction - I'd like to see the prices kept in place after the sale is closed as well, rather than the price removed and replaced with SOLD.

huge +1 to that. From a sellers point of view it can be very helpful to see what similar basses have sold for in the past, and help them put a price on the bass
Sorry to resurrect, but I've been digging around for clarification on why people are replacing sold prices with 'SOLD' and sometimes even replacing the whole first post with 'SOLD' so you dont know what it was or how much it went for. As a buyer it's really annoying to see this. I can't see any real reason to remove the sold price but to remove the whole subject and first post, well, that's just awful. why would you do that? I dont think it fits with the community vibe at all. I noticed posters arent calling out questionable techniques either (like selling something only recently bought but making up some see-thru story), nor posters that sell gear and dont update their threads (yet mention the sale in other threads, for example). I know it takes all sorts to make a world, but there's no excuse for some of this slack behaviour. my 2p. please excuse any implied horridness, it isnt meant that way. peace out!

Now I need to work some charm on Musicman thanks for your advice guys, seriously! If you ever need to know anything about Iron Maiden, Thrash or Stoner Rock, just ask! -
