1. I have to be honest and say musically my taste is very much pre-2000 and that a lot of recent bands leave me cold. Can any of you guys recommend recent albums where you are stunned how good the bass is? I haven't really heard anyhting lately where the bass playing really stands out for me but I am open to anything from dance to metal.
 2.
I have heard that there is another instrument that has six strings.... But less is more! ;-) I grew up in the late 70's early 80's listening to the likes of JJ Burnell, Derek Forbes and Mick Karn who were clearly the 'lead' instrument so why take a back seat! Steve.
I don't need to type any more...the above sums up why I play bass in a nutshell. Add to that Hooky, Paul Simenon & Andy Rourke. I tried the six string and didn't get on with it as I have children size hands so I gave the bass a go and just though it was so much cooler looking than lead guitar and felt like you had an offensive weapon in your hands....not a kids toy.
 3.
why, by carly simon .......... with the legendary nard on bass
what a song, what a bass player!
 4.
Well I was certainly entertained! Thanks Josh. I suppose it's down to what you think of as funk, but I struggle to find examples of good funk, post 1979. Did funk metamorphise or fade away?
It got swallowed up by Disco I think.
 5. It be Mark King-esque but I wish I could play half as well as that!
 6.
There is another thread on discovering Funk, but in the mean time this should keep you going.
Sounds like Janet Jackson ripped this off for Rythmn Nation
 7. As a relative novice with Funk, I wondered if any of you guys had any suggestions as to where to start with good funk tracks with good bass in. I love this track http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8MU0mjri5k0 Even if the cover gives me nightmares.
 8.
I Wanna Be Adored - Stone Roses Somebody Elses Guy - Jocelyn Brown
'Somebody Elses Guy' - not a big fan of the song but some kick ass bass in there
 9.
Another great underrated bass player - top call!
Ressurection Joe is one of my fav bass lines of all time
 10.
But how many people assume that his Commedia dell'Arte Pierrot and the release of Fashion and Ashes To Ashes preceded New Romanticism, only to be debussed of the notion on a simple review of release dates? Bowie, the archetypal chameleon, and an artful imitator.
I think Numan, proto-type Human League, Japan and even Roxy could all have been seen as 'inventing' New Romantic music....or even 'Underpass' by Jon Foxx. I heard that Bowie spat the dummy on the Kenny Everitt show once when he thought Numan had stolen his thunder when he turned up in his kind of 'boiler suite' late seventies image.
 11. Aria Pro II SB-1000...ever since John Taylor from the Duranies had one
 12.
..... and kissing with confidence? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dp-4o0IodsE
That's one for the Kids......lol
 13.
Hey thanks everyone! I kind of thought (hoped) that would be the answer to this. Dill the bassist in waiting feels back on track!
I'm with you on this, I practice along with backing tracks etc and I'm getting pretty good. Sadly with kid number 2 on the way I don't think i'll be mentioning that I want to join a band anytime soon....lol
 14.
Christmas Wrapping - Waitresses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP_WH4heId4 Northern lights - Renaissance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGFvJLBjhxI Valley Girl - Moon and Frank Zappa (great video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M9aY7hXjGU
Northern lights - Renaissance...god that brings back memories of my childhood. My parents had that on seven inch in about 1977!
 15.
Hmm Someone mentioned Tony Butler - Big Country - quaility player, own sound Dare we mention Adam Clayton, the oft pilloried U2 man? Certainly some memorable basslines whihc make the songs - esp on the early albums, and maybe for New Year's Fay alone Oh, and +1 to most of the above suggestions also lol
There is some nice stuff on the early U2 albums, then he just kind of gave up and took the cash
 16. 1. Bernard Edwards 2. JJ Burnell 3. Alan Spenner for his Roxy Music stuff 4. Dave Allen (Gang of four) 5. Bruce Foxton 6. Bruce Thomas 7. Norman Watt-roy
 17.
Mark King - for making bass attention grabbing (think his fingerstyle lines are better than the chugga chugga though) +1 Nick Beggs Paul Denman from Sade - nice souful lines played on a Stingray. See HERE Nick Thorp from Curiosity Killed The Cat - great basslines on a Status. Cheesy clip alert Good bass players, awful decade for music!
The eighties was not awful for music ...most of my stuff comes from that era.
 18.
Stuart Morrow (New Model Army) Chris Thompson (Screaming Blue Messiahs) Greg Norton (Husker Du) Paul Raven (KIlling Joke) Stan Stammers(Theatre if Hate/Spear of Destiny) Les Pattinson (Echo and the Bunnymen-met him backstage at York festival-nice chap!)
+1 for Stu Morrow How about Gary Tibbs (Roxy / Adam & Ants) Mick Karn Pino Hooky Andy Rourke Colin Moudling (XTC) Mark King Simon Gallup I guess JJ Burnell is the 70's John Taylor +1 for Nick Beggs and that guy from 'Fashion'
 19. Just dowloaded the Rare Earth one and it goes on for 21 minutes!....it's one of those "Ahh i know this track" moments
 20. I'm a big fan of Wal's but that leather one is hideous.
 21. "Love will tear us apart" by Joy Division. The two versions i've heard (Paul Young, The Cure) make me want to rip my ears off
 22. Well I've now taken the plunge and put an advert out on a muso sight for any fellow bumbling amatuer musos who fancy making a racket together to let me know...so i'll keep practicing and wait and see what happens. I have a name sorted out. I was in an Asda car park the other day and a flyer for a jungle night blew up in my face and it was called 'The Monday Club' ...what a good name for a band I thought.
 23. Anyone heard 'Sunrise' by New Order...Hooky in full attack!
 24.
I must be about the 4th person here to cite Talk Talk's It's My Life - a big push towards the fretless for me, and one of those basslines that has you grinning like a loon when you crack it. No Doubt? No Point. Old School: Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (Pet Sounds) (Carol Kaye) Beatles - Fixing A Hole (Sgt. Pepper's) Big Country - Inwards (The Crossing) (link to video: caution, contains Kilts From the progressive dept: Radiohead - Airbag (OK Computer) Yes - Our Song (90125) Rush - Leave That Thing Alone (Counterparts) Marillion - Gazpacho (Afraid Of Sunlight) Peter Gabriel - Don't Give Up (So) (T-Lev's "Super Wonder Nappy Bass")
must have played Inwards by BC 100 times but i've never noticed what a good bass line it had. Tony Butler is vastly underated IMO.
