1. I changed the strings over for some Rotosound nylon strings last night (which has improved it slighty)
2. I checked Fiction Plane out on youtube and tbh, his son seemed to be trying to hard to be his dad....without the any decent songs.
3. Well i've never adjusted the action before but one of my best mates is a life long guitarist and has loads of experience messing around with string heights and truss rods etc so i am going to run it by him. Maybe I'm expecting too much from an entry level fretless, especially as i've gown up listening to Mick Karn and Percy Jones on their WAL's! I just wasn't sure weather the E & A should be sounding like they do...ie like a fretted?
4.
Don't change the strings, you probably need to lower the action on the E and A. Garry Willis's website has a nice page on correctly setting up a fretless (or fretted) bass.
Do you have a link?
5. Ok thanks guys..i'll try lowering the action. It is possible for it to sound better as there is a guy on Youtube playing the 5 stringer.
6. Good to hear...I'm seeing them in Cardiff in October....got the tickets yesterday. I hadn't heard about Maximo park being support....I think Cardiff's is Fiction Plane that crappy band that Sting's son is in
7. I've just recieved my new Harley Benton fretless. Having never tried a fretless before, I can only get that that trademark "mwah" sound on the D & G strings. E & A don't really sound any different than a normal fretted bass. Is that correct or shoud I be getting a fretless sound across all 4 strings? Would a change from the roundwound strings improve the sound?
8. First that popped into my head was Mike Joyce & Andy Rourke.
9.
It seems it was played by Janice Marie Johnson, who co-founded the band. Hamster
Wow..they don't look bad..they must be 50 by now!...i'm going to attempt this bassline as it's just so good
10. Been trawling through some old disco stuff to listen to the amazing bass lines and discovered a very simple but brilliant bass line on "Boogie Ooogie Ooogie" by Taste Of Honey. It's really pushed high in the mix, real teeth rattling stuff and not muffled like a lot of disco bass lines tend to be. I've heard most of the Chic, Earth Wind & Fire, Wild Cherry stuff etc but can anyone recommend some more obscure stuff I may not have found?
11. I use the c-tech pocket rockit v2 http://www.musicstreet.co.uk/ctechpocketro...%20for%20Guitar It's briliiant and has various diffrerent effects distortion / delay etc and a metronome as well as a line in and out socket so i can plug in my mp3 player in. I use nothing else to practice with.
12. Thanks for the info, that's exactly the problem i'm having in that my fingers tend to hang in mid air limbo and not hovering over the strings. Maybe is just an experience thing but the any excercise would help....thanks
13. Hi Guys. Been playing almost a year now and i'm beyond the beginners stage but i am really worried about my fretting hand When I compare myself to other players on you tube, their fretting hands seem to be flat to the board. Although I can play notes fairly quickly now, other peoples technique seem a lot better than mine and i'm not convinced i'm using the 'classic' playing style (if there is such a thing), i.e playing notes with the correct fingers etc. I do take lessons but nothing has been mentioned so far. Is this something I should be 'fretting' (sorry couldn't help myself) about or is everybodys had positioning different? I looked up Larry Graham on YouTube and he has his only unique style again so maybe you just develop your own style?
14.
I don't know who the bassist is but I love the bassline to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-opY4qcidFk I love the orange suits too
It took me years to notice but isn't this the track that David Brent is humming during his famous 'dance' for comic relief in 'The Office' ?
15.
Leon Sylvers - the whispers "and the beat goes on" TM Stevens - Narada Walden I should've loved ya Freddie Washington - Patrice Rushen's forget me nots
"and the beat goes on" what a cracking track that was and the bass on "forget me nots" is a belter also.
16. Without a doubt Bernard Edwards but can anyone recommend others to listen to?
17. Hi Guys, Just had my first dive into the world of fretless and got one of these little bargains A HARLEY BENTON HBB400FLTBK. Any suggestions for string type. I've heard nylon strings are good but i've never tried them..also someone suggested stearing clear of roundwounds as they can chew up your fretboard
18.
We played at a wedding reception where Steve Hogarth was one of the guests, he stepped up to the mic to sing a couple of numbers. Bit of a shame we didn't know any Marillion songs! Hamster
First two Marillion albums with Steve H were great, then it all went yawnsville
19.
Personally I think both the versions by Nouvelle Vague and Susanna And The Magical Orchestra are pretty good. YMMV
I have a pretty woeful version by The Cure somewhere on a bootleg
20.
='bass_in_ya_face' date='Aug 28 2007, 11:04 PM' post='52025'] Prejudice & Pride by Private Lives. Rare as chicken's teeth but I got a copy and listening to it I was immediately drawn to how fantastic the bass was and after further investigation....step forward Mr Nick Beggs. A seriously under rated player IMHO. He totally makes the album in much the same way as Pino Palladion makes No Parlez. (except for the abomination that was Paul Young's take on 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', nothing could save that!) MB1. +1 Theres more to Nick than "Too Shy" indeed..... genuine nice guy sent me a signed copy of his Ellis Beggs and Howard cd.Check out "Big bubbles no troubles" hes a great Chapman Stick player too!
Yeah i've got both EBH albums (yes they did two, check his website) and have spoken to him via email... If John Paul Jones uses him when he tours, that's good enough for me!

22.
yeah, Hamer fretless 8-string. I was watching how he had to hold the neck up- serious neck-dive with the 8 machineheads and the explorer body..... I also wondered why he was playing a strat in the walking on the moon vid- did he only have his guitar with him, not any bass?
Yeah I noticed the strat in that video also..I know he was originally a lead guitarist but i'm sure there is a story behind that video somewhere.

24. I was watching a TOTP2 special last night about the police and I noticed in several videos Sting had a red fretless bass that was shaped like a Gibson Thunderbird but it was really ugly. Anyone know what this was as i'm a bit of an anorak when it comes to bass spotting but I couldn't make out what it was look up "de doo doo doo, de daa daa daa" on youtube and it's on there.
