1. Joe, you need to put wrapping paper on these basses For anyone who needs to know, JT is a top fella, in fact, here's the man himself, albeit with my rig..: Sexy stuff
  2.
Hi All, Not sure how many of you are aware of the Open mic nights on Wednesdays from 8.30pm onwards @ the Vibe in Epsom, Surrey. Great evening to break up the week. Some, from what I can tell some talented people go up there and do their thing. I go every wednesday so would be good to meet some people from here there if you'd be up for that. Bring your bass if your any good, sure they would love it. Some excellent guitarists have been up in the last 2 weeks, getting ever more popular from what I can see. Reece
Hmm, might come along to this one week Reece, so you can see a not very talented guy do his thing Not this week mind, bit busy. Will call re. "lessons" too, promise!!
  3. This looks amazing, really nice work you've done there. May you have many hours of fun and laughter (and music making) in there

I'm a prune. 126dB isn't 1W @ 1m, it's with 350W input power @ 1m. Which is silly and rather unlikely. The 1W @ 1m peak SPL is 102dB, that reads much more normal. (I was getting confused, hadn't looked at WinISD for a few weeks and was recalling the wrong figures..)
I didn't mean to suggest that your cab was badly designed - far from it. It looks good to me. It's just that the Eminence Beta will sound boomy in virtually any box you put it in. But you've modelled it - you know that.
Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like I thought you were criticising me either!! When I say "badly designed" I mean in terms of size/driver choices Yes, it's boomy, but in this box it's boomy in quite a musical way (IMO), hence why it can get so loud without too much trouble. If that makes sense..?
126dB? I said 126dB? Mad, ye're all mad, I tell ye.
I am. This isn't by any means a flat response of 126dB over a wide range, it's a single peak. It's a very un-flat frequency response, the very antithesis of BFM's and Alex's designs It's not a perfect solution to anything, it's a very compromised and badly designed cab (hence Stevie's comments), but to my ears it sounds good so that's all that really matters. Quite tempted to build a 2nd one to have a nice 2x15 matching rig. In fact, I have enough plywood left....
Nice work. I'd just mention though that three-inch ports will normally make an awful lot of wind noise in that size of cab. You might consider increasing them to 4".
Not much that I can notice, but maybe I'm deaf
With the Eminence Beta in there it will doubtless be singing the One Note Samba. I've finally gotten somewhere with my 1x15 self-build cab. The cab is pretty tiny, but a bit bigger than an Ashdown Mini15. It's the same footprint as the Trace V-Type series combos and cabs, and is the same speaker config and tuning as the 1x15 comob I used to have (now residing with Tinman ). That is, Eminence Beta 15, tuned to about 48Hz in a 56x54x33cm (external) box. It's light, it's f-ing loud (126db at ~ 110Hz, 1W @ 1m), but it doesn't go massively low - Alex's cabs would eat this for breakfast. Fortunately it doesn't (theoretically) suffer any over-excursion due to the impedance curve below about 80Hz. To my ears it sounds mighty fine, but I built it coz I liked the combo's sound The LH500 makes it sing... So, first tests have proved it's going to sound good, now all I need to do is: 1) finish bracing the inside 2) re-check the airtightness of the box 3) line the interior walls with wadding 4) cover the cab 5) make the vinyl-weave grille frame (metal circle is added foot protection ) 6) add feet and corners ...then I can recheck its performance I reckon it'll weigh in at about 18kg, we'll see... Expect it to be finished in about 6 months....
  9. Gorgeous bass Steve, love it!
  10. Hi Reece! Photos needed, as has already been said Will sort out some "lessons" asap, gonna give you a bell tonight or tomorrow Mert
  11. That V-Type 4x8 combo is a heavy bugger but one of the best, sweetest sounding combos I've ever heard.
  12. I want to try the Big Deep One. That may suit my tonal tastes better than the Big One. But in a band situation I can imagine the big One being the daddy Good points about the Midget and Big Twin... Hmmm....
  13. 2x15 rigs are the way forward, I tell ya. That's what I will be running very soon, once I've finished my 1x15 cab. Yes it won't match the 1x15 Trace but I don't care Later this year, or next, or the year after, depending on when I have the cash, I'll be getting two barefacedBass Compacts
  14. I use the Hex Cores, they're great
  15.
Okay, used the Big One & LH-1000 in anger last night & I can safely say that it is the best bass sound I've ever had, better even then the Peavey Mark IV & Sunn 2x15 I had 20 years ago . Everything was there in spades - bass, middle, treble and VOLUME. ..snip...
Awesome review John. Honestly think that with the new crossover this cab will be hard to beat by anyone. Wikkid cabs
  16. I bet Mr Claber will have a cheaper and more British solution very soon In fact, I know he will coz I've sort of seen the samples
  17.
and B. if I miss the tweeter, with Alex's design.
You won't
  18.
In 36 hours time, I will be giving the Big One a kW of canage. With earplugs in. I really can't wait.
It will destroy the walls. Awesome
  19. SMX is definitely pre-Gibson, but also means it's older than 8yrs I'm afraid - at least 10, probably more like 13 or 14. Pics and a guide price always good
  20.
For the first time in my life, I came out on top.
Same here, precisely why I bought mine when I did, and boy am I glad I did
  21.
Hey Martin (Merton), do you happen to know what the string distance from the pickups is meant to be on the Groove? I've got it set the same at the front soapbar on my S2's at the moment. Rich.
Sorry Rich, only just seen this. No idea I'm afraid!
  22. Will have to dig out pics. In order: in Vox Escort Bass (2nd hand, my first bass amp!) - 1993 in Trace Elliot Commando 15 (still got this as a practice amp) - 1996 in 2nd Trace Commando linked to the first - 2000 in Trace Elliot AH300-12 with Ashdown MAG410T - 2002 out the 2nd Trace Commando - 2002 in Trace 1153 cab - 2005 in Trace V-Type head - 2005 out Ashdown MAG410T - 2006 in Trace 2103H cab - 2006 out Trace Elliot V-Type head - 2006 in Trace Elliot V-Type 1x15 combo - 2006 out Trace Elliot AH300-12 - 2007 in Eden Nemesis NA320 - 2007 out Trace 2103H - 2008 out Nemesis NA320 - 2008 in Trace Elliot V-Type 4x8 combo and 4x8 cab - 2008 out Trace Elliot 1153 - 2008 out Trace Elliot V-Type 4x8 combo - 2008 in Hartke LH500 - 2008 out Trace V-Type 1x15 combo - 2009 in Trace Elliot 1518 cab - 2009 So I still have the Hartke LH500, Trace 4x8 cab, Trace 1x15 cab and Trace Commando combo.... Christ Joined BC (or BW as it was then) in 2006, had lurked in 2005. I blame you lot for it all!!!
  23. All the best for a speedy recovery Nick
  24. Hate tweeters. None of my current cabs have them, the two I've owned in the past I had them turned off.
  25. Good luck to you Craig. I built a speaker cab many years ago based around my ideas for looks and a very very little understanding of the science. It was sh*t. Really sh*t. But it spurred me on to learn more, and with a lot of further reading (most notably starting with a lot of Alex and BFM's posts on here) I have learnt a hell of a lot and am currently designing and building a new 1x15 cab which should be pretty good - for me... Anyhoo, I wish you all the best and I hope your experience is better than my first foray into the murky world of bass amplification. Glad you've ditched the grille tho, didn't like that
