1. Cheers discreet. Yea, we are aware of the high mix the bass and vocals have. . We were thinking of tweaking it but it can be like opening a can of worms once you start doing that. We also noticed it sounds better when the music playing medium is eq'd flat.
2. Thanks for the feedback Sub. We enjoy playing these songs and have quite a carefree, optimistic vibe when we get together and play/practise/write. We're back on BBC Introducing Cumbria tonight from 8pm onwards apparently, they sent an email out to use saying they're really digging "Wasting Time" which is a good thing i suppose. :-) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p012bztt Regards, Smythe.
3. Hello Bass Chatters, Just thought I'd post up on here my bands EP was finished on saturday and I would like to share it with you via Soundcloud. Im really chuffed with the material we have produced as - for the first time that I've been in an original band - everyone has had an input and kept completely open minded. The recording isnt too bad either although if you have dissected it as much as we have then you will notice somethings that are tweakable. We were surprised to here we got air play on BBC Introducing on BBC Cumbria this evening and we are not sure how they got it, it must be from the sound engineer who did the recording! here goes and i hope you all enjoy https://soundcloud.c...6-hour-day-ep-1 Regards, Smythe
4.
Are you gonna keep getting it refinished every time it gets bumped ?
it wasnt just a bump my friend , it took off two LARGE chunks of paint work, one was probably 2 inch by half an inch and the other was about 1 n half inch by half and inch, with heavy cracking/veining around the damaged area. Ive had the bass refinished by Dave Wilson (thanks wateroftyne) and what a fantastic job he did. Here is a link to his facebook page where he conducts a lot of his business from: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002025970885&fref=ts you will also see on this page my bass during its transformation, Its a white/cream Jazz.
5. Recently, a friend and I decided to temporarily trade basses with the possibility of a part exchange, my Lakland 4402 for his Fender Jazz Victor Bailey. I really like the VB, it has a very warm and woody tone and the preamp just gives you little frequency boosts that sounds good in pretty much every setting. The only thing that I'm hestitant on where a permanent trade is concerned is the ground/60Hz hum that eminates from it. I know they say single coil instruments are prone to this but my other jazz is quiet as anything. I originally thought the problem was the elixir coated strings I'd put on it, interfering with the bridge ground with the nanoweb not being conductive. I Changed over to some Fender 7250's and it didn't change anything. A quick peak in the cavity showed all grounds are secure and in a star grounded arrangement. One thing I did notice was the inner face of the back cavity has no shielding on it. I've ordered some copper tape to cover it up, but failing that , I don't know what it could be and I'll probably not go ahead with the trade . I was wondering if Any of you guys have ideas to solve this or have experience on this?
6. http://www.promenademusic.co.uk/yamaha-trb1005-caramel-brown Here it is....
7. Morecambe promenade music currently have my old modified yamaha trb1005j for sale at a steal. They don't specify the mods on the site, but it certainly sounds great. very unique (rickenbacker - esque), I just couldn't get on with 5strings though. It has a Hipshot A style Bridge (Aluminium), glockenklang 3 band preamp and a bartolini ADBG buffer circuit.
8. Anyone know what stock strings comes on this bass? i picked up one in october and was pleasantly surprised with the strings installed on it. Very bright and cutting... PS. Its the best Jazz ive ever played. great pickup output , weighty, well constructed and i prefer the thicker than normal neck. Apparently its modelled on a '65 Jazz, even though its a '66 reissue...strange !
9. I'm not a five string fan myself, I don't think many brands make them very well tbh and I'm not comfy with them, they don't suit my style of playing. But if I was to choose Within the intermediate price range the first brand I'd go with for a 5 without any hesitation is Lakland. Head and shoulders the best 5 string brand I've ever tried. Yamaha make some crackers too.
10. I'm guessing the OP hasn't had much experience using flats? I used to use round wounds on every bass I had until about 2 years ago. I decided to make the plunge to try out flats and fell in love with D'Addario Chromes. They are surprisingly bright and like most flats have that distinctive luscious, phat and warm low end nearly all tone conscious bass players strive for. They take a good few months of playing to make them loosen up and lose their tacky feel , but once they're played in I find it hard to use a set of any other type of string. The only basses I own that doesn't have Chromes on are my Jazz, which is fitted with Elixir Stainless steels, and my fretless that has TI flats on.
11.
And then get a hard case...
Funnily enough i do have a couple of them, but to save on space in the car i fatefully opted on the cheap gig bag with no padding, a definite lesson learnt.....
12. Excellent, thanks for that, haltwhistle isn't all that far from my location either.
13. I'm a flats man myself, Chromes in particular.,. but I didn't like them on my Jazz, I felt they muted the trademark Jazz tone. Nickel's or Steels bring out that classic punchy, grindy tone which is what these iconic basses are all about ...
14. OK, last night I was setting off to practice with my new years eve project group. I was running late, the wind was howling and I had handfuls and shoulders full of music gear. Loading the car up with a struggle, finally get to the last item, my brand new Fender Jazz 66 reissue 2013 and a huge gust of wind takes the gig bag right out my hand/shoulder and deposits it with a thud into the middle of the road. Mortified isn't even a word I can use to describe how I'm feeling. The bang has took off two decent sized chips of paint work near the top of the body. Unfortunately for me, I'm not one who appreciates the "roadworn" look, nor do I think chips/scratches give a bass "character". So I was wondering, does anyone know of a good instrument restorer, preferably in the north of England? I will appreciate all feedback...
15. Unknown Aria - owned circa 1994 - my first bass, I played it for two weeks and went back to guitar and sold it on Tanglewood P-Copy - owned 2002-2004 - went back to bass as it was the only position left in a band I wanted to join. It had a terribly high action and wasn't nice to pla, but money was tight. Sold it on when I left the band. Unknown active Vintage PJ - owned 2005-2007 - bought this battered and worn bass for pittance, fixed up all its dints and dings with car body filler and sprayed it with black spray paint. Another that was awful to play. Really high action, warped neck but it actually sounded quite good. The bass I started to learn how to play properly on. Eventually sold it on to a fellow musician. Ibanez SRX350 - owned 2007-2013 - really liked this bass, it had a powerful tone and felt a dream to play compared to my previous instruments. The bass I've owned the longest. Only sold it recently (begrudgingly) to make space for my newbies. Warwick Corvette $$ - 2008-2010 - the most ill fated big buy of my life. I've always loved the tone of Warwick's and playing this bass in a shop, sat down, it felt like my perfect bass. Playing it stood up with a strap was a different story. I hated it. It got cast aside as my secondary bass to my Ibanez. Part exchanged it in with no remorse. Lakland Skyline 4402 - owned from 2010 - Amazing bass, versatile preamp that can replicate most fender tones and music man. Plays like a dream. I can't see me ever selling it Yamaha TRB1005J - owned 2010-2014 - another ill fated big buy. I wanted to try out the waters with a 5string and never really got comfortable with it, I tried pimping it with a better preamp, buffer circuit and a new bridge, but was never happy, part exchanged in for a newbie Vintage V940FL fretless - owned from 2012 - seen this little budget beauty on eBay and decided I couldn't let it go to waste. You get a lot of bass from the price from the Vintage brand. Its heavy as hell but has a rewarding woody tone with plenty of mwah. Strung with TI flats and sounds great. Vintage V4 - owned from 2013 - another occasion where I seen this bass at a really good price and couldn't let it pass me by. One of the best budget basses out there. Really good build and a more aggressive tone than the average P-Copy. I use this as my primary practise bass strung with Chromes. FenderJazz Limited Edition '66 Reissue 2013 MIJ - owned from 2013 - finally made the plunge to buy a Fender being a long time disser of the brand. I finally found one I really loved of theirs. Plays like a dream gorgeous aesthetics and a powerful punchy output. Home built Fender Precision - built 2013 - I'd been buying parts for this projects for the best part of 2013. Finally got cracking on the project in late October. Fender MIM body, a fender licensed precision 1970's replacement neck made by Mighty Mite, Schaller tuners, allparts scratch plate, hipshot a style bridge, a '58 split coil pickup handwound by the creamery, stellartone tone styler tone pot. It was a tough job with lots of mistakes along the way.finally finished it in late November. Its one of my biggest achievements of late.it plays fantastic and sounds amazing. My primary bass at the moment.
16.
Just tried a Vintage V940FL bass at my local music shop and i was blown away by it! It's pretty heavy in the body, i think it's Bubinga, but i was amazed at the sounds i was able to get out of it. I've got my heart set on a saucy Squier or Vintage fretless - both in the Jaco style - because i play a Squier Jazz and the body shape will feel right at home but this was a lovely bass. My one gripe was the size of the bottom horn, it's really small so sits rather unsteadily on my thigh when i played it sitting down but it's now a contender for becomming my chosen fretless. Just need to try either a Squier or Vintage for comparison. I've been told these basses come up on The Bay for really good prices too...
I have this fretless too. I bought it second hand for under £200 and its become a buy of the century for me... My band mates love it, ive only used it in a gigging situation twice, but I've had more positive comments and questions from revellers about the V940fl than i have about all my expensive basses combined... i've had them over 6 yrs and gigged regularly with threm too lol!! Stringed with Thomastik JF344's and you cant go wrong. Being knit picky, the only thing i dislike about the bass is the neck P pickup is a bit loud and boomy but i just keep the EQ in and around the bridge J pickup area.
17.
I know this will cause some major abuse on here but i gigged last week using the headliners Orange bass terror. Have used them before so as soon as i saw it i though ''ohhhhhh bollocks''. To me they just sound like someone has put an angry bee in an empty ale can and stuck a micropohone next to the hole. Horrible things
Same, i used another bands gear late last year out of sheer laziness on my part, It was one of these terror heads (500w) with orange 2x10 and 2x12, the ones that where the speakers are stacked behind .... It looks the part but sound wise..... Terrible. Just mushy, farty and loud even on the lowest volume setting, couldnt get a half decent bit of clarity out of it.... After that i dont use anything but my own gear from now on.... Markbass all the way
18. the Chromes are on my 4 string now (Lakland Skyline 44-02) and they sound exquisite, i forgot how bright these are straight out the packet, but even so, they still have that low end warm depth most bassists drool over! Ive been rubbing them frantically with an old cotton tshirt to try and get rid of that tacky/sticky feeling they have as new, and funnily enough it seems to be working, it took a good few months for it to disipate off just playing alone on my other set.
19.
Giving them a good rub with an old cotton t-shirt helps to shift the tacky feeling.
Thanks, I'll do that with the 4 string set when i get around to putting them on .
20. Ive converted to being a flats only player now, I used D'Addario Nickel Wounds for years but thought I'd test the waters on flats. I got some Chromes and initially hated them, They felt cumbersome, stiff and had a tacky/resisistant feel straight out the box and were no good for sliding with, so i quickly relegated them to a practise bass, but with a 4-5 months of playing around with them, they started to come to life. The tension eased up, the tacky resistant feeling subsided and they felt and sounded great. Within 6 months they were back on a main 5 string bass. Now i've bought another set for my 4 string. I use Thomastiks 43-100 for my fretless, they have very little tension and plenty of prominence, perfect for fretless. They're a little too low tension to put on a fretted bass for me (they just rested on the frets in tune!), i would of needed to do a lot of truss and bridge adjustments to make them playable; which i wasnt prepared to do!
21. Leave a fret removal to a professional. Get a squire jazz fretless or a yamaha rbx fretless. Won't cost you any more than £300.
22. Thanks for the replies fella's But my mind is made up,..... I'm going to stick with D'Addario Chromes. Its what i have on my 5 string and I've gotten so used to them now they are played in a bit, to me; it doesn't feel right playing roundwounds. They're getting better with age too (about 15month old now) . They've lost their friction and got a nice patina on their tone . I was a bit wary about how slap and pop would sound with Chromes also, but after some experimenting i really like the tone you get, Fat, thumpy slaps and punchy but not too trebly pops! They're such a great flatwound for fretted basses. Smythe
23. I had a very similar mind set as the OP, i was a 4 string only player and didn't really have a care or a reason to try a 5string. I eventually started toying around with them in music stores and found one i bonded with (there's not many out there that's nice to play!!). I found playing 5 string over the last 18months has improved my overall playing and approach to bass guitar, as also fretless playing has. It's helped me overcome the plateau i was on playing just a 4string fretted bass alone.
24. Hello fellow BC'er's, In the last year or so, I've been using flatwound strings on both my 5 string and fretless bass and become very accustomed to them, I recently used my 4 string bass at a gig that has set of fairly fresh round wounds on them and didn't enjoy the experience much. they lacked the thump and meatiness I've been used to when using flats and they felt a little feeble under the fingers. I was wondering if anyone had tried out using half rounds and what peoples views were on them as i have only tried round wound and flats and I'm curious about this type of string? Also how do pressure wounds sound/feel? thanks Smythe
