Ok Ive had the work done on my Yamaha TRB1005J. In the end i went for a Hipshot A Style Bridge as they looked more sturdier than the B Style. I'm really pleased with this. I also had a Glockenklang 3 band preamp installed too. I had to take it to the local music shop as it was a tough job to do. Firstly, the cavity needed skimming down so the pots could reach through. It took a couple of techys to get the preamp working as well. I love the tone of the Glock, its really pure and clean but it is pretty quiet. I have to turn up the volume on my preamp/amp head at least another notch to be at unity with my Lakland 44-02! Is this normal for a Glockenklang or is this a sign of signal loss somewhere? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated Smythe

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like playing Fenders!! I've felt like a bit of an outcast for saying the only thing i like about them is their tone!! I also found the same with Warwicks. Awful to play, but I really like their tone. Playability wise the best I've ever picked up are Laklands by a long shot, closely followed by Yamaha and Marleaux.

The Babicz Full Contact looks a tasty bridge too, but it seems to be marketed/niched as a Fender fit. Would it fit to non-Fender basses too?

yea, after some research i think i will have to drill out some new holes with the hipshot b style for my bass, i'll have to fill in the old holes with a wood filler/epoxy. Also read a good tip elsewhere saying to feed the bottom and top strings that are currently on your bass through the new bridge saddles whilst its still unattached to the bass, apply tension and allow it to meet the body to find a good position. Some others also said to take note of intonation points by measuring from 12fret to the saddles on your old bridge, cant see how that'll work with the saddles being in a stock position and most installations require saddle removal?!

Hi folks.. Im currently looking into modding my Yamaha TRB1005J, the only modding i have done on other basses in the past were very slight (swapped out machine heads and input jacks) and nothing as major as i want to do with this bass. I'm looking at replacing the stock preamp with a Glockenklang 3-band and also wanting to swap the bridge for a Hipshot B style. I have a soldering/electronics background so the preamp wont be a problem i was wondering how easy it is to swap a bridge as i relise i cant just plonk it anywhere, it'l have to placed so intonation can be kept in a comfortable place right?. Any tips on how i can acheive this? Or do the bridges come with instructions? thanks

Down the practise room on friday I ran the 102p with the LM3 in conjunction with the STD 104HF linked to my Carvin B2000. I put a jack between the LM3's tuner out and the Carvin's instrument input and ran a speaker lead from the lm3 to the 102p and a speaker lead from the 104HF to the Carvin. All i can say is I got thunderous results!!! Far, far more power than i'll ever need but running both at a lower volume gave a sense of great unison. The Carvin's rocky edge and LM3's warm rich depth really complimented each other. its a lot of gear to cart around to a gig situation but it is quite a unique sounding tone that i'd be interested to incorporating at some point!!!

Its not over bearingly loud, but noticeable to me , and it can be dialled out, so its no big issue.

Hello peeps, I've just purchased the traveller 102p cab after a year of saving to use at smaller venues. First impressions was its nice aesthetics and how light it was (which is a bonus!). I took it down to the practise room to test it on my own. I was surprised at how loud this cab is for the size of it! Although not as heavy low end as its big brother the std 104hf it still has a really nice and controlled low end. Now my only issue with it is the tweeter. It sounds considerably noisier (hissy) than the104hf, I don't know if this is common with the 102p model , or rear ported cabs in general, or its a dodgy tweeter? Even with out a bass plugged in and the tweeter level set at zero it can be heard. Anyone have any similar experience with them? Or general thoughts on this?! PS: This noise can be cancelled out by either turning the tweeter right up near maximum (sounds wrong by all accounts, but it works! ) or by adjusting the VLE past 9 o'clock on my LM3.

From experience,the main thing I go on when buying a bass is primarily comfort, and then tone. The brand of the bass is irrelevant to me, if it feels comfortable playing in a standing position then its defo a big buying point. I'll then check out the tones and volume etc. I can always change the OBP or p'ups on a bass if I feel it isn't up to scratch. I remember a long time ago i briefly tried a certain high end brand of bass in a shop. Playing it sat down it felt good and most of all I totally loved its tone. I bought the same one online a while later and realised one thing I didn't take into perspective.....playing it in a standing position... It felt really uncomfortable to me! I perservered for a year or so and eventually got rid, So I learnt from that one!!

On my 5 String I use D'Addario EXL165SL Roundwounds from G through to E and a D'Addario XL Chromes flatwound on the B, cant really comment on the high C i dont own a 6 string.

I'd also look in to running them through a blend unit (i.e. Xotic X-Blender) to allow the clean tone of your bass to amp signal to cut through the mix.

I'm a solid state man myself, primarily, for cost reasons, and secondly, for the minimum amount of maintenance they need. I just use a VT Bass pedal to replicate the valve sound if needed. I'm currently running a Carvin B2000 (partially valved - has a valved preamp section) for larger venues and Little Mark III for smaller venues or when I'm playing support slots/events/festivals etc. I gotta admit, the Carvin blew on me a while ago. A power thermister overloaded, blew and shorted out a whole load of other transisters and diodes around the vicinity. Carvin, being the great company they are, replaced this amp with no hassle whatsoever as it was still under warranty (the B2000 was still in its infancy). I noticed upon opening up the replacement, they've really beefed up the capacitors with the new design. The Little Mark III is so easy to transport about and packs some serious warm low end for such a dainty thing. I actually prefer this over the Carvin B2000. Although it doesnt have anywhere near the same power, (I run a 4 ohm cab, Little Mark runs 500w at 4ohms- the Carvin a whopping 1200w at 4ohm!!), it has a character/tone i prefer. Maybe one day I will take the leap from SS to all valve but until i come into some serious money, i wont be doing so, I also cant be bothered with all the annual replacing of power valves, getting them biased etc, So its Solid State for me for the time being!.

I recently put an order in to the Bass Centre London for a MarkBass Standard 104HF cabinet, in September.....Im still waiting now, ive been in contact with them via phone on 3 occasions, what struck me is they seem legite and the customer service is polite, friendly and apologetic for delays, but my patience is wearing thin now. i cant help but think Im being taken for a ride, I have a feeling theyre trying to have me off. Im going to phone them tommorow and i want definate answer or I'll b demanding a refund, Ill be onto trading standards if they decline!!
