1. Wow - I'd love to be in a band playing that material!
2. I only play 5's. I get lost on a 4. Although I'm happy playing a 5, I realize now that there's a LOT more 4 stringers out there, so a lot more choice when looking for basses!
3.
I'm in a covers band that gets a cheer when we start Stones or Small Faces numbers and absolutely nothing with Doors, Jackson Browne and Tom Petty covers.
That would be me in the audience then ..................
4. Normally I FIND THIS KIND OF THING REPULSIVE (oops - damn caps lock!) but I actually kind of like that (massive fan of the film) Not that I'd want to own it of course.
5. I think that you only need one bass clef - at the 12th fret. Three is overkill and dilutes the idea.
6.
Andy Viccars. Top, top man! http://www.andyviccarscustom.co.uk/ He's in Bletchley, MK
Great advice! I took it to Andy and he did a superb job! The frets were really poor and he has done a fantastic job on them, I can't believe that they aren't new ones. I'll be going there in future!
7. Niiiice guitar! I have a stash or cash in the GAS account as it happens but I'm after a bass. Got too many guitars already!
8. I've been using an ironing board as a guitar bench for years. I thought everyone did .............
9.
I assume you're talking about the US models? The Standard has all five tuners in a row, Deluxe has a 4+1 arrangement. The Deluxe I had was very light and well put together, and of course it has 22 frets, SCN pickups and the active circuit. I think it boils down to whether you want to go active or passive really. I would strongly advise you to try one out in a store as quality seems very variable. I was lucky enough to try 4 at the same time and the one I bought was head and shoulders above the rest for finish and feel. Sound was of course almost identical.
I'd be interested to know where you found four!!! I haven't located a single one to try yet This is what I'm looking for:
10. I've been wanting a fender jazz V for some time, and although one or two have shown up here, I'm kind of thinking about getting 'exactly' the model I want rather than something that's not quite there. I'm having trouble finding anywhere within reasonable distance that has anything to try, so I was thinking about getting one from somewhere like GAK or Thomman etc. but the only thing that worries me is the fact that Fender seem to have been so unreliable on quality over the years, is it a bad idea? Edit: any opinions on deluxe vs standard? - worth the extra?
11. We are talking jape of the decade... We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool .............
12.
Never had the pleaseure of being there.
LOL!
13. Great looking bass! I just bid on that on eBay - I knew that I couldn't make the reserve but it felt good just to think I'd tried! Best of luck with selling.
14. Not seen that before. I liked her playing a lot, lovely tone as well. How can anyone seriously call that lift music!?!?
15.
I think your all missing the point somewhat..... I'm still talking about reading technique!!
That may be true, but your original post title was extremely misleading! your actual question was "who plays a 5 string like a five string?"
16. I've only ever really played 5's. I certainly get anywhere up to the 12th fret sometimes on it. The downside is I can't play a 4 string bass. worst offender is Eb, I can never seem to find it when I want it on a 4!
17. No price and no pix. We're not really taking this seriously are we!
18. Nice. I'd quite like to put together a Warmoth bass. Might have to look into it again.
19. Hah! someone should have snapped it up at the original price! To be honest, you'd be better off starting a new thread and getting a clean break from the old price. I don't think that it'll sell here though, really expensive kit doesn't seem to shift at the moment.
20. I tried on once and it totally wasn't my sort of bass. Are they worth the money? Well I have tried a few instruments over the years (not necessarily bass) that were so amazing that I had to have them, and what they cost didn't really come into the equation (other than the fact that I could somehow rustle the money up). So, yes - I'd say they are worth it if you really want one.
21.
I've recently decided to really get to grips with the three (what I call "tricky-bastard") scales that are in part symetrical but also have infinite possibilities - these are the diminished, whole tone and the melodic minor - but in turn using these over diminished/altered/seventh chords when soloing (or playing a bass line). I've also been adding in chormatic notes - much like bebop scales - and just really trying to get into the deeper harmonic aspects of these things away from just major and minor.
Wow - some people are on a different planet to me when it comes to bass playing. I just feel good hitting the right root note!
22. Hmmn ................. at the old rates I'd have torn your arm off for that bass, but we're on a hiding to nothing buying anything in Euros right now. back when the Euro was worth about 64p that would have cost less than £1100! Still a great deal of course, but more than I have spare.
23. I disagree. I don't think that everyone has virtuosity in them. All the best sportsmen for example have great 'natural' talent as well as having put all the hard work in. All you can say for sure is that if you put 10,000 hours in on an instrument you will probably be better at it afterwards, but then again, with that amount of playing you'll probably have RSI .....
24. Heh - I love Guthrie Govan, my 2nd favourite guitar player. Amazing guitarist but I'll never be able to play that stuff. My fave guitarist is Thomas Blug, and I'm more into that kind of 'feel' playing myself. I'm trying to play less notes and say more these days. As far as bass goes, I'm a big fan of Christian Worship music and love playing along to up tempo tracks, usually making up my own bass lines. I'm also getting more into piano again, practicing some Chapman stick stuff wot I wrote, and I'm trying to get a basic grasp of drumming. After many years of trying to work at stuff (theory, proper practice etc.) I have given up in favour of just having fun.
25. I have a Hohner Jack 5 string AND a Status S2 classic headless. I always wanted a headless bass, and the jack seemed like a good option as the reviews were pretty positive. I was a guitarist when I bought it and NOT a bass player, and the neck profile felt extremely chunky and difficult to get to grips with. Toyed around with it for many years but never really got into bass playing. Fast forward to a few years ago - I always loved the look of the Status basses, and with some spare cash I snapped up one (with LEDs!). It looked such a thing of beauty, but shock! I was used to the Jack now and it felt easier to play than the status! Hovever, the Status was soooo cool that I stuck with it and now it feels 10 times nice than the Hohner bass in terms of playability. To be honest, I don't enjoy playing the hohner much any more, it is so much less enjoyable an experience. I have it at work for the occasional lunchtime noodle. The Status is great, but it's not my 'holy grail' bass. I don't know what would be - still looking.
