That’s true and using a full fat valve amp I get input compression the harder I hit the input ! Definitely couldn’t hear or see any real advantage using a compressor live. Perhaps in a studio maybe ?

Well after trying three compressors and not liking the results at all I’ve changed back to using the MXR m81 pre amp and added some pedals after for various volume boosts and further EQ options Ampeg Opto Comp - did a decent job but added a warm high end cut off Keeley Bass Limiter - superb but I didn’t feel it was doing much MXR M87 compressor- also nice but just couldn’t dial in a sound that didn’t kill my dynamics I now have a board as below giving me Clean Preamp ( MXR is superb ) Spark Booster ( adds a lift and hits my CTM100 input a little harder MoJoMoJo ( adds more grunt and deep low end tone ) They all play nicely together and each one in turn improves the sound which was naturally my aim I must stop now and be content with the result !!

My simple pedalboard but it does what I need very well

The MXR bass preamp proved to be a great success at last gig Gave me so much more EQ adjustment with my CTM100 Excellent pedal and quiet in operation

New amp opinion/advice - Darkglass, Blackstar or Orange

Orange LBT is indeed a great amp Very loud 500w and in my opinion a nicer tone compared to the Terror series -

Ashdown ABM600 and your search is over -
My first bass too except mine was black

Recently looked at basic pre amp pedals to run in front of my CTM100 to give me more EQ choices. Tried the Ampeg Classic Preamp pedal which is low cost and sounded nice but very noisy so back it went Next in is the MXR Bass PreAmp and although you can buy it’s big brother with drive ( which I don’t need ) I went for the simpler model yet it still has a DI out if needed The pedal is super quiet with very well thought out EQ points for Bass Mids and Treble. Mids have a sweepable frequency control too. Input and output controls for totally clean EQ Very nice sounding and does the job very well I like it 👍

I guess up front or in front if you need to step on a pedal or two mid song but I find in front of amp when the only pedal I step on is the tuner and that is before sets
-
I went through the strap lock saga originally using the old Schaller then the new Today I use either the Fender black rubber strap locks or orange Basschat ones and strap is left on the bass Perfect solution and low cost
-
Silly question perhaps but I put mine in front of my speaker cab as most pedals are always on As a guitarist of course it was up front near the stage monitors Where do you park your pedal board and why ?

While I’m waiting for my Pedaltrain and MXR Compressor to arrive my current set of pedals TC Polytune 3 then MXR Bass Pre Amp then SparkBooster I will stick the MXR compressor before the Preamp pedal I can achieve better EQ ( CTM100 is basic and passive ) with the MXR preamp ( very quiet ) and the SparkBooster is always on but I back off on my bass guitar volume to clean it up and crank it up again when guitarist plays a solo Work in progress

I have found a compressor helps and boosting the 1k / 1.2k frequency to add more note attack helps a lot

RED HEART - female fronted rock covers from Iron Maiden to Alanis Morissette!! Singer is a foxy red head from the USA and a great front person and singer We are very lucky to have her ❤️

Guitarists tend to use the FX loop as they are using the amps overdrive Modulation and delays sound better after overdrive / distortion hence the FX loop use For bass amps I don’t think it makes that much difference unless you’re bypassing the Pre amp etc

TC Electronic BQ500 or an Ampeg PF350????
BassAdder60 replied to Mike Bungo's topic in Amps and Cabs
I tried the Ampeg Classic Pre Amp and found it a noisy pedal which is a shame as the full fat version sounds amazing -
I can also vouch for their excellent service Recently my ABM210H cab was sounding odd from one of the 10” speakers I took the front grille off removed the speaker and saw one of the connections felt loose After sorting that I managed to lose one of the black screws !! A quick message to Dave asking what screws they use and he said I will pop you some in the post !! They really go beyond good service, in fact I would say they are the best U.K. based company for service and backup even after warranty often with little or no cost. My last visit to see them, Dan, Georgina and Dave I took two packets of biscuits to say thanks

Indeed !! Im sure after my next gig I will be looking at something !!!

After fitting Dimarzios to both my Player Series I thought I had found the tone I liked. Sadly great as it is I missed something So back in goes the CS62 pickup The CS62 is warmer and less hot but better overall clarity and handles the low end better with the CTM100 valve head. It does have a slight mid scoop but with EQ tweeks I can pop more mids in It doesn’t sound harsh so suits a mix of genres but still works well when belting out The Trooper !!! Was getting slightly fed up with so many changes but I think I’m at the right place now and with my new pedals too it gives me what I need

Well ., after experimenting with the Ampeg Opto Comp I’ve made a change to my pedals Gone is the Ampeg and in its place is the MXR M87 sitting in front of the MXR M81 Pre Amp I particularly wanted the M81 as I didn’t need the larger variant with drive. I think the combination of the two will work well and give me a decent neutral sounding compressor and more EQ options running into the front end of the CTM100

This Trace Elliot ELF never ceases to amaze me!!!!
BassAdder60 replied to Mike Bungo's topic in Amps and Cabs
I can use my ELF with the band with my SVT212AV 4 ohm cab and it’s loud enough ( we play pretty loud ) You will need definitely a 4ohm load I think to really get the most from it Sounds great too -
I think Opto Comps by design have a slower response time but for my needs it works fine, perhaps my description of using it as a limiter was misleading. I found even running a mild compression setting tamed the large boomy notes that to me was compressing enough to protect my amp input and speakers The better limiter is the Keeley but for me I couldn’t justify £200 where the £90 Ampeg works well and adds a vintage vibe to it. The Ampeg does colour your tone very slightly but it works for me with the Ashdown amps
