Next year I'll be celebrating the 25th anniversary since I picked my Marlin Slammer out of the Littlewoods catalogue. Everyone learns at a different pace, some get on better with a teacher and some don't, some have a natural ability and some need a help in the right direction. Everyone is different. At 36, I only found out this year that I have Aspergers. that would explain a lot, especially about how I can pick up stuff and retain it for years. With the possible exceptions of Jazz and big band music there are only so many ways a song can progress and my brain holds all patterns. I couldn't consciously tell you what they are but I just know them. Between the ages of 12 and 14 I only played the E string with my thumb. Sounds bizarre when I think about it now but it might explain how I managed to learn to play quickly by running my hand up and down that single string to play songs. It all changed when I found Appetite for Destruction by Guns n Roses. I actually wore out the cassette (what's a Cassette? I hear you cry) bought it on CD and wore out the CD

I've been using the 4 string set for the past 14 months and absolutely love them but I don't know about the 5 string set. The tone didn't seem to change between fitting them and now but it may have been so gradual that I just didn't notice a change. One thing I have discovered is that the tension difference between strings can be dependant on where you hit the strings with your right hand. eg my rotos feel pretty stiff but I am playing them over the bridge pickup of my Thunderbird which is about an inch away from the bridge. I had TI flats on my 6 string Ibanez SR1016 and they were very good. I am a very hard hitter but didn't find them too low tension

I've been lucky with my previous jobs in that I've never had a conflict between day job and gig. I've only been in my current role a couple of months but I don't think it would be an issue to get away early as the owner of the business is a drummer in an originals band and one of the managing directors is a singer. We chatted last Friday at our staff night out about getting a guitarist and doing something ourselves for a bit of a laugh

I have a love/hate relationship with effects. I fancy a different sound for certain things so buy pedals, use them for a bit and then sell them again cos I can't be bothered and end up preferring my sound with nothing added. So I'm at the selling them all stage and have the following for sale which all include postage to mainland UK: Boss PH-3 Phaser pedal - All working as per but the previous owner removed the rubber under thingy and label to fit velcro for a pedal board so its bare metal underneath. kind of makes sense as its perfectly flat. £55 Chord Flanger - does exactly what it says on the pedal. Usual Flanger type controls in a sturdy metal casing. usual Boss type fittings. comes with original box. £15 I'm in two minds about my Japanese OC-2 as well but I've checked Ebay and a couple have sold for £95+ so I might keep a hold of it for a bit as I don't want to end up having to buy another down the line for three figures Again, all pedals are priced to include postage to mainland UK. If you're not in the UK then let me know where you are and I'll find out how much extra it will be for you. I haven't got round to taking pictures of the Phaser yet but here are the others:

I've just bought myself an Ibanez Doug Wimbish that's had a nasty accident and needs part of the lower body replaced as its going to be easier than piecing everything together again. Does anyone know what type of finish is used on it? I'm guessing some sort of transparent poly. Any ideas as there doesn't seem to be any way to contact Ibanez directly, only through the distributors. thanks

I had one a few years back and out of all the Stingrays I owned it was the best sounding by a country mile. Very growly. I only sold it cos I was afraid to gig with it cos it was so beautiful. That and the 20th anniversary one which was a bit meh sounding.

You'd have to borrow a pair of Hattie Jacques stockings to fit that book in

Thunderbirds, epiphone or expensive Gibson?
Delberthot replied to The Goatreich's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had my Epiphone Goth Thunderbird for well over a year and anyone who knows me will tell you that's a hell of a lot longer than any of the other basses I've had. Its a bit of a Triggers Broom bass though. The body and neck are original but I've fitted mine with Hipshot Supertone bridge, EMG HZ pickups, new 500k pots with paper-in-oil cap, new knobs, Gibson TRC, Roto flats, Schaller Strap locks and Fret FX LEDs along the top of the neck. -
We've been using the iColour 4 lights for the past 2 or 3 years and they've been really good. I know that LEDs last a long time but in the time we've had them, I've had to change one bulb at a cost of about £1 You can also link them up to a DMX controller and set them off with a laptop at specific parts.

I've played with quite a few bands recently where they do Sweet Child of Mine in D so it was a bit of 'Underpants to Brown' last night with my own band trying to remember how to play it in B

Its just not bloody cricket. I'm in Lanzarote that night. I'd loved to have seen them again. Bah
Yes, an interesting question. My 'first call' band is a seven-piece dixie Chicago jazz band. We play all the usual standards, Royal Garden Blues, Dippermouth Blues etc. But we also have a tasty rhythm section, particularly our piano player. He, along with each of the front line guys, gets a feature during the course of the evening. So, just to wind the leader up, we often slot in Killer Joe which has a very nice bass riff. We have also done Waltz for Debby. Surprisingly the audiences love it.
I played in a Dixie band years ago and we used to do Sweet Home Chicago for our own pleasure. Actually the entire gig for me is a self indulgent 'what can I play here' fest. I'm always thinking about new ways to play stuff. Doesn't have to be a million miles an hour, just something a bit different. As long as it fits then I'll try it.

A 3m one from pedals to amp and another 3m from bass to pedals

I was the same last week when I depped with a band. Loads of songs I'd played a thousand times but all up a tone. I think I had about 2 days notice to learn them

I didn't realise that part of "Come Back and Stay" was slapped until I saw this

My '51 reissue was one of the best basses I have ever owned but I couldn't get on with the lack of contour so that's partly why I had the Warmoth built with the '54 style body - which is now for sale

It almost got sold or traded but I have seen sense. Its not a megabucks bass but its given me a lot of happiness to play and it sounds the mutts. I've had quite a good year. previously I've only ever played in bands that I was a permanent member but this year I've depped with quite a few bands - partly because I enjoy playing and partly because it should generate more dep gigs for next year with these bands and others to fill in the gaps in the diary. plus its nice to get complements. when you play in a steady band for so long you forget how good your band mates are so to get complements on my playing is nice

eb0 eb3 style Bridge....can't adjust the height..any ideas???
Delberthot replied to bassamp's topic in Repairs and Technical
That's quite common on those basses. If you can get the stud out then fire some glue into it and push it back in. They either don't use glue in the factory or Pritt Stick -
I thought you two had only just been reunited, were deeply in love and would be together for the rest of eternity. Good luck with the sale, it's a lovely looker
Yeah so did I but its not giving me what I want. Plus if I ever changed my sound there's a chance I could get it back if it goes to someone on the forum.
I have a warmoth jazz in my picture Nordstrands audere baddass schallers. I love it its up there with custom shop fender quality. This by the way looks absolutely awesome. skez
Its top banana as far as quality goes. -
It is the sound but also the feel. I've got used to playing the Thunderbird which has a really slim neck. I've played 5, 6, 8 and 12 strings so when i went back to a 4 I could pretty much pick up anything and it would seem easy to play but its been a while since I had anything with more than 4 strings so that nice slim Thunderbird neck is what I am used to. The pickup choice was down to my Fender '51 reissue being one of my favourite basses out of all of the ones that I have owned but as things move on I've got used to having a bridge pickup. I don't need to sell the bass but

I've come to the conclusion that the Thunderbird is the one and only bass that I want. I've posted a thread in the repair/technical section to get a bit of advice regarding routing for a set of EMGs so I'll see what some people say there before deciding for definite. Anyway this, as you may know, is a very highly specced bass and was a culmination of playing many different basses to find the combination that I wanted. The body is mahogany, rear routed so it has a huge control cavity for adding a preamp (no battery box though). Its finished in gold flake and fitted with a Gotoh 201 gold bridge, 500k caps, paper-in-oil cap, Schaller strap locks and has been recently fitted with a Seymour Duncan Stack for Single Coil Precision bass pickup which comes from the SD custom shop and is about £160 new. The jazz bass width neck is wenge with an ebony fretboard and side dots only. I also specified the gold frets which I believe have something like copper or brass or something like that to make them look gold. It is also fitted with a Warwick JAN III nut for added adjustability. The neck is fitted with a gold string tree and Gotoh BML tuners. The wenge neck is very slippery and if it starts to feel sticky from gigging, simply run some 000 grade steel wool over it and its back to being slippery as an eel. I currently have this fitted with a set of 50 gauge Rotosound flats and it sounds amazing. Nice fat bottom end but stilll clear as a bell. The necks on Warmoth basses are rock solid. This bass has 50 gauge strings and the truss rod is as loose as it will go. There was a bit of back bow when I got the bass back and I mean a little bit but it could have been due to a change in temperature or something and that's totally gone since I fitted these strings. I've had a look for marks and there's only a couple that I can see. There's a bit of paint chipped off on the body at the bottom of the neck heel so you and the audience won't see it while playing. The other one is a ding on the tip of the headstock. One of the tuner screws is missing as you will se in one of the pictures. Other than that its tip top. You may or may not be interested in what made me choose the parts I did so here goes: Mahogany body as fitted to my 30th anniversary Stingray and Goth Thunderbird Gold Flake finish as my Modulus Flea bass had the silver finish and I thought gold would be cool Gotoh bridge as per the Modulus Wenge neck from my Warwick Thumb NT5 as is the JAN III Ebony fretboard with side dots only as per my Bass Collection SB665 Gotoh BML tuners as all of my Stingrays had. Seymour Duncan Stack for Single Coil cos I love Sting's sound Rotosound 50 gauge flats cos I'm a bit of a Steve Harris fan and I love the strings in general I'm going to have to put a price on this which is difficult but to give you an idea, If you were to spec this and have it made today you wouldn't get much change out of £1000 when you factor in the cost of the parts, shipping, customs and having Jimmy Moon fit the nut and give it a fret level. sh*t this is more difficult than I thought. How does £600 sound? I'll say £600 value for a trade but may be able to go lower for a cash sale. I may also be interested in trades of the headless variety or try me. You may have something I like. and now the pictures. I've noticed that one of them was taken when I had the bartolini active circuit fitted but its back to being passive and has two gold knobs
