1.
Read the headstock! It's called the "Jazz Bass".
Read what I wrote again The Jazzmaster guitar was originally aimed at Jazz guitarists. The Jazz bass came out as the bass version to complement it and that is why it has that name, just like the original Precision complimented the Telecaster then was updated in 1957 to be more like a bass version of the strat with the headstock change.
2. It was to match the Fender Jazzmaster guitar wasn't it? The guitar was initially aimed at jazz guitarists AFAIK
3.
IAll of this can be altered/changed outboard with amps, effects, wang, EQ etc...
Wang? I've always loved the Precision sound but no Precision I ever played ever sounded right to me compared to what I was looking for. It took a PJ, my current bass, with active EQ to get the Precision sound I had in my head all these years. Combined with having a Jazz width neck which I prefer means that I'm as happy as the proverbial dog with 2 wangs. The only reason I'm selling my Rickenbacker, or at least trying to.
4. Used this for an outdoor charity gig yesterday through an Ampeg head and SVT 15" cab slaved to an 800w Peavey poweramp and Peavey 2x15" and it was absolutely incredible.
5.
Just been thinking about these again and I still want one. Big mistake? How do I get a good one?!
Ahem
6. This is now on Ebay but I've had to raise the price for it on there to cover the £75 it'll cost me if it sells plus the fee for accepting Paypal. Suffice to say that I'd rather sell it on here.
7. Bugger, I'm going to have to put this on Egay, aren't I?
8. I like the Beatles to an extent and can see the attraction. I've heard some of the music that was about before everyone heard them and for the most part it was bloody aweful so its easy to see the attraction of them and their music. The Stones are touring simply because they are still alive (although they don't always look it) They were overshadowed in the 60s by the Beatles and by Led Zeppelin in the 70s. If anyone happens to be in Liverpool for Beatles weekend then check out the band's website here and give me a wave if you happen to come along to one of our gigs. I personally cannot bloody wait.
9. A band I am currently in are playing at International Beatles Weekend at the end of August in Liverpool. Personally, I'm not that big a fan but we're doing a lot of McCartney & Wings stuff as well which Iike a bit of. I'm doing it purely for the experience, because I love to play and so that I can say that I've done it.
10. I'll counter that offer with fork 'andles, some tartan paint and a weekend for two in February
11. That's a beauty and exactly what I'm after as a trade for the Rick
12.
I have never been a huge Ric fan (mostly due to their looks) until I saw the Sheepdogs play at Hop Farm this year and really warmed to the sound; lovely warm bottom with nice crisp highs that aren't at all harsh but cut through the mix.....suddenly I'm gassing for one. This looks like a beauty but alas, all I have is trade bait in my sig.
That Ibanez is beautiful
13.
Quo are the specialists in final tours though, aren't they?
I thought that honour belonged to Elton John?
14.
I saw them at Wembley Stadium on the Steel Wheels tour -
So will this one be the Steel Wheelchairs tour? I suppose if you're going to do one last money making tour, you should get as close to the original lineup as you can. The Quo are doing one with Alan Lancaster possibly next year, could it be their final tour? I love the bass runs at the end of 19th Nervous Breakdown. In fact that's my favourite era of the Stones. I also really like Undercover of the Night but apparently it was recorded twice - once with Bill and again with Robbie Shakespeare and I get the feeling that the one that was released was Robbie as their's a bit of popping going on.
15. I'm not sure about the comments about Flea's slapping - you're obviously listening to some of the early stuff like Get Up and Jump or Skinny Sweaty Man which are both fantastic songs but he hardly slaps at all these days. In fact, most of his slapping these days is if he happens to be playing an older tracklive. My first Chilis album was BSSM which is still my favourite and I consider it to be the point where they rised to their highest point before heading downhill. What I mean is that even I can't listen to all of the tracks on their earliest albums but you can gradually hear them getting better. When we get to Mother's Milk its nearly there then BSSM comes along and its finally the complete package in every way. Afterwards, John freaks out and leaves but One Hot Minute has some crackers but seems overall a very dark album. Californication is pretty good for most of it.By the time we get to By The Way, it seems to be almost every second track is decent, then its all over bar the shouting for me I'm afraid I still love them as a band and as a bass player, Flea is my biggest influence by a mile but unfortunately they're not what they used to be. Anyway for some rarer quality stuff listen to Sikamikanico which was a track that was missed off BSSM and Stretch which was from the One Hot Minute recordings. Also Show Me Your Soul from the What Hits? album I had a thought over the holidays after passing numerous buskers that most instruments sound sh*t when played solo.Flea can play fancy, groove or play nothing and it always seems to fit
16. The best fretless bass I have ever owned was a Stingray
17. Ooooooooh Matron! That is a lovely one.
18. Yeah, play whatever you like. I manage to fit in the riffs for Transcending by the Chilis and South Side of the Sky by Yes at different parts of the song for my own amusement, although I reckon I could fit in a bit of the Queen song of the same name Right that's Friday night's challenge
19. If you're old enough to have bought Live Killers from 1979 in Gatefold sleeve LP form at then there is a pic of JD using a maple fretless precision and the reason I've lusted after one for years. But what I meant in my earlier post is that we're probably hearing the Precision through the DI into the desk, completely bypassing whatever amps were on stage unless one or some of the cabs were mic'd up
20. will that not be pure P bass right into the desk?
21.
When you turn the screw make sure the saddle is actually moving, sometimes it doesn't and needs a little gentle persuasion.
+1 The screw might be moving but the tension of the string could be stopping the saddle from moving. Sometime you can move it with your fingers, other times you just need to detune it a bit and it'll move
22. Wear the bass slightly higher up than normal on a neoprene strap and get one of those plastic pickup surrounds. Not a hint of neck dive. I'd been playing an Epiphone Thunderbird that pointed upwards regardless of what people say for the past 18 months until I got this. You can just make me out at the back left of this photo
23. If its just for moving it in the house, how about those things you get out of argos for moving washing machines?
